Note, that this is only the first part of the game (saves in this playtest version will be compatible with future versions). However, most of the game is already done so I think we'll be able to polish up the rest relatively quickly (I'm hoping to get the whole thing in playtesting within the next 2 weeks).
All maps are in the game. 93 total.
Monsters and monster groups are properly attached to the appropriate maps & encounters.
Monster XP & gold values have been properly balanced.
Monster AI & monster abilities are all in the game.
All monster visuals (both sane and insane) are done.
All songs are in game.
The cutscene visuals are almost all done.
The flying dragon “vehicle” code for the world map code is done.
The party changing menu is done.
Various bugs have been fixed.
What remains to be done:
Necronomicon (aka Epitaph from Breath of Death VII)
Finish writing and inserting the dialogue
Insert the remaining story scenes
Finish putting in chest contents
Finish balancing monster stats
Put in some more restore spots in dungeons
Add townsfolk to remaining towns
A few miscellaneous playtesting suggestions we’ve received
Finish attaching special effect visuals to abilities
Finish remaining cutscenes
Cthulhu Saves the World will not come out tomorrow.
However, I think Cthulhu Saves the World will be done tomorrow. At that point, I’ll put it up in playtesting for people to do a final going over to hopefully catch anything we missed before putting it into peer review shortly thereafter. I don’t predict any major issues – CSTW is built on the BoDVII engine which is solid, plus we’ve stuck the game into playtesting a few times before so I believe all of the major issues have been caught by now – but we want to do a final check before putting it into peer review.
If you are an XBLIG developer with a creator’s club membership, we would greatly appreciate it if you could take some time out of your schedule to play through the game when it goes into playtesting late tomorrow or early Friday. I understand that it’s the holiday season so many people have plans, but it would mean the world to us if we could get this game out before the end of the year. If we could get at least a couple people besides ourselves to play through the whole thing by the end of the week, then we could submit the game on the 25th and hopefully get at least half a week of sales before the pay period ends. Plus fans of RPGs who have the rest of the year off would get plenty of time to play it before having to go back to work/school.
Also, when the game does go out, we would appreciate any and all help in spreading the word. Tell your friends, posts on message boards, email websites, the works. As I mentioned in an earlier post, how much time we have free to work on game development in the first quarter of 2011 hinges on how many copies of Cthulhu Saves the World we manage to sell this month and since we don’t have much time left, those first few days will be crucial.
Arg. I leave for the holidays tomorrow (no Xbox) and don't come back until Tuesday. If it's still in playtest and you want me to blast through I can. I'll check in when I get back. And yes you've got my loud mouth on your side when the time comes.
I'll be submitting Cthulhu Saves the World to peer review later today. If all goes well, it'll be up on the XBox Live Marketplace on Wednesday. 240 MS points.
You're going to remake the spirit of the breath of death story but just change the name of the game, some of the characters names but leave them with look alikes that are call outs to a franchise that you don't own anymore.
It'll be planned as a 6 part game but you'll only make the first three and leave much of the questions that were introduced not only in the original game but also the remakes unanswered, while adding even more existential crap that doesn't add to the overall story or direction of the games.
Also you'll design one of the central characters to fill all the fanwank needs.
This is what you're supposed to do in games you start in the middle of the series for, right?
We should make Christmas Breath of Death VII one of these days. It'll be the exact same game but there will be presents and we'll put a snow overlay on the screen.
The soonest it can come out is 48 hours from the time it was submitted, which would mean it could come out very late on Wednesday (so it would be actually available to download early Thursday).
If you're an XNA developer, I would greatly appreciate any help you can give with peer review.
And for everybody else, I hope you enjoy the game! The more sales we can get in December, the better, so spread the word once it's out! And of course, high user ratings are always appreciated.
Looks like we have 3 passes already. Let's keep them coming! It would be so awesome if it passed today so then I wouldn't have to stress about it (and then it would automatically go live around Wednesday midnight).
Anyway this game has been a long time in the making, and it has been a blast. There've been ups and downs but we poured our hearts into this. I can't even believe the amount of effort and dedication we put into this game, even compared to our first one.
I really hope you guys like it and I hope all the hard work and the enthusiasm we put into this game pays off
So, if I get this tonight, it will probably be the last game I pick up this decade. If it doesn't show on the Marketplace, or I'm out / drunk, it just might be the first game of the new decade!
Can anyone beat it in time for GotY considerations? :P

My guess is that it'll take around 6-10 hours to beat depending on your playstyle. And once you beat it, you could try a harder difficulty (3 this time - Easy, Normal, Hard) or one of the 3 bonus modes that you unlock after finishing:
Score Attack - Same as w/Breath of Death VII. Get more points by defeating bosses when you're at low LVs.
Highlander - You can only use 1 character in battle at a time. XP gain rate is quadrupled.
Overkill - You go up to LV40 in your first battle. Good for messing around.
5$ for a Steam combo pack would have me sold but if it were me I would be wary about the size of the market vs the porting effort. So I'll cry on the inside but I'd understand if the numbers just don't make sense for it.
Context - Saw a random Steam comment in this thread then dug up a blog post from a few months back asking for feedback on a 5$ package.
Ha, so the Highlander game wasn't cancelled after all eh? Just a hefty dose of Cthulhu and a sprinkle of awesome added to it.
We did cancel one game mode - Cthulhu's Angels - which was going to be a remix of the game with some additions and at least one new playable character (Molly the Were-Zompire from one of my earlier games). Basically, it would be like the second scenario system that Resident Evil 2 featured where you play through the game with Claire/Leon and then you play it again with the other character and some things are changed around. Since Cthulhu Saves the World took longer than expected, we had to drop that mode. On the more positive side, the big XBLIG annual competition, Dream-Build-Play, is just around the corner so maybe we'll add that mode before we submit CSTW to that competition to improve our chances of winning. Haven't decided yet.
EDIT: We are planning on doing a Steam version, but I don't know how long it will be before it's ready.

My Xbox hasn't been plugged into an outlet for two and a half months. I haven't turned it on for five or six.
Would you like me to send a letter to someone about my situation when I change that to buy your game on Wednesday?
