I didn't pick up breath of death because the lame video game reference humor turned me off, and the cover art was really bad.

Just saw a trailer for this new game though and it looks a lot more interesting. So is the game play pretty dragon questy or what? (I love the DQ games) also does it still use bad family guy style reference humour?

Breath of Death VII's cover art was intentionally bad - it was supposed to be a parody of Akira Toriyama's style (Dragon Quest, Dragon Ball, Blue Dragon).

Yes, there are plenty of game references in Cthulhu Saves the World, but the story and characters are a lot more developed than BoDVII and there's plenty of non referential humor as well. And yes, the gameplay is pretty Dragon Questey.

As someone that's nearly played through the game in play test I can safely say that you don't need to try this game to buy it. RainbowDespair and slash000 have done an excellent job in the trial of softening you up for the purchase screen, but I'll be frank. You're doing yourself a major disservice if you like either RPGs or Cthulhu in any way, shape or form if you don't just flat out buy this. That pesky buy screen is only going to mess with your immersion anyhow.

I actually bought the game twice, once with both of my accounts on principle. I felt like I was getting too good of a deal only paying 3 bucks for such a great game.

The humor throughout the entire game is top notch and the story fits the setting. The back and forth between Cthulhu and the narrator does not stop, and has some of the most entertaining stuff I've seen in a game period.

Right under Castle Crashers, this is now my favorite Xbox live game. I still think it should have been for Arcade, but I'm admittedly a fanboy.

Just buy it. If you're really stingy try it, but this is one 3 dollars you will not at all regret spending.

Awesome. I'll get it as soon as I get back home from holidays. Nicely done guys. :^:

also, Cthulu related question that came up while listening to the song - is it just me or is the concept of this whole "cult of Cthulu" thing really that absurd? They want to raise their master and doom the world - just so they get killed first and quickly? Can't they just jump off the next cliff or something and be done with it?

    Thanks!

As far as the cult, well, you see, they are likely fairly mad in the first place. But like many cults, sacrificing themselves for their god is probably an honor, especially if they get to be devoured by him! :P

Yeah, we were aiming for a FFIV-FFV level with the visuals.

One of the dungeons is a throwback to the Magitek factory from FFVI.

    Lv 20ish spoilers
Just beat the spaceship side quest and got Paws - the green alien tentacle-cat who has now made a permanent place on my team. Sorry October, you're out: no room for glass cannons on my team.

Man, Square should've got you guys to do FF13. It would have been so much better.

Welp, just finished the game. I heard someone say earlier that the game was around 5 hours long, but that playthrough took me around 11-12 hours. Anyway, great, great game. That was easily the best JRPG I've played since Dragon Quest 8 in 2005.

The thread title should be changed now that the games out, so more people might know about it!

    Seriously awesome guys.

Taking it an hour-or-so at a time and loving it.

Most people are probably past this part but I loved...
My first loss/death was on the Ape Princess and I welcomed it - very nicely done boss fight. I revised my strategy to make sure I started poisoning and Krakening the wolves right away because trying to handle all three was too much with that protection they have on. Also buffed up the blade dude and dropped an 1800 hit on her ugly ass. :P

I can't help but gush: I'm really, really liking Cthulhu Saves the World. It seems even more refined than BoD VII, which in itself was a great initial outing. Probably one of my favorite RPGs this year, to be honest; I'm only a few hours in (just finished up in Dunwitch), but if the quality holds out I'll be coming back for multiple playthroughs to come. Good show, chaps. <3

So I wasn't going to pick this up initially.

But then I saw the writing and it's been so long since I played a good JRPG (I was a fiend for them back in the snes through playstation 1/2 era).

This looks like it'll be well worth it.

    *edit*

Did you guys do all the sprite work? It looks fantastic.

Yeah, we did EVERYTHING. I (Robert Boyd) did the design, coding, and writing, Slash000 (Bill Stiernberg) did all of the graphics, animation, and map designs, and Gordon McNeil did all the music. All in all 3 people made the game (although we had some help from others with debugging and playtesting).

Yup, can't help but gush here either, played some last night (only had to stop due to finishing a co-op Legendary Halo : Reach run).

Fantastic stuff, you can see the work you guys have put into it, feels so crafted and personal - a labour of love. Can't wait to play more!

edit: TOTP, so here is some actual detail I like so far - the graphics and sprites are much improved, the backgrounds and environments are much more detailed, the writing is honestly great, I found myself actually reading and enjoying every word of the parts I played, also the music fits so much better, and is of a great quality - as a huge Steve Harris/Iron Maiden fan, that galloping bass part near the start put a massive smile on my face.
