Yeah, the difficulty does ramp up quite fast. Going back and buying upgrades is essential. Any good ways to get money fast?
Look for the Subspace Highways. Thanks to the flying piggy banks and "?" blocks, they give out tons of coins.
I've found booting up the beginning of Level 5 is the easiest because the Subspace doorway is right there at the start, so I can run in, smash all the block for lots of coins, then go back to the map and do it all again.
Then again, I guess Kim and Stephen don't either...
I'd considered the questionable need, but I figured if I put it out there that they're not playable characters, someone might consider it a spoiler because now they know what it couldn't be (even though I don't actually know that it couldn't be them). ...does that make sense?
I'm not sure.

Is it just me or do all the female characters in the game have like DD's?
I mean is this Scott Pilgrim or Soul Calibur?
Nah, they just gave them a bit of an exaggerated bounce so they're more visible in 16-bit pixel world. Otherwise, you don't really see them (look at screenshot stills).
They probably could've done a better job with Ramona's short-shorts though. Yeah, that was the outfit she wore at one point in the comics, but in the game she looks like she's running around with no pants on.

That's cool, I see where you're coming from. I spoilered it as well just out of courtesy.
Which makes for a weird dynamic in that you're better off dying until you see the continue screen before starting a new stage, if you lost any lives in the previous stage.
I find it's like that in a few brawlers.
Well, that's how it was in TMNT GBA.
Also NSMB Wii, if anyone on your team was almost out of lives when starting a new level it was better to just have them suicide to 0 and then have everyone else bubble at the start. Hooray for pointless, outdated lives mechanics!
So how is the game? How does it compare to Castle Crashers as far as having 2-3 friends over and playing locally?
The GiantBomb quicklook was... underwhelming. Normally I like seeing those things, but this one was kinda depressing to watch, actually. Like watching someone transcribe a funeral.

Easy way to tell if you'll enjoy this game.
Step 1) Go play the original River City Ransom
Step 2) Did you have fun?
If yes, you will probably enjoy this game. It is unflinchingly old school to the point where it retains some stupid outdated mechanics and it will not hesitate to cheap you to death by surrounding you and flinch locking you until you die. But it's still a lot of fun if those things aren't going to ruin the whole experience for you.
That said, I'm having a blast with it but I need to make my roommate sit down and play it with my because there are so many spots where a second player would make things easier.
But they did say how much this game was like RCR, and they liked RCR so...yeah
Anyway, I've been maining Ramona. Finally beat Patel after grinding (okay, dying and being forced to restart) the first level and just buying the Bionic Arm. Suddenly, dead hipsters everywhere!
Also, that GBQL showed me how to activate The Glow, which made crowd control a bit easier.
Just wish Square and Circle didn't look so similar at times, as well as be blocked out by my HP dwindling down. What am I supposed to mash?!

Well it probably isn't called that, considering The Glow is something completely different in the books. But it's when you go on a hot streak and you start to glow. You can do a multiple hit combo by rapidly tapping light punch.
What is a gbql and how do I activate hyper mode? I got it once by drinking coffee, but if there is another way to do it on purpose, I am intrigued. I get it at random times, I don't know what I do. It seems to go away when you get hit.

Giant Bomb Quick Look.
You get hyper mode by defeating five enemies without getting hit. It's in the manual.

Great way to get it is to kill everyone in a dog pile.
If you can trap a bunch of enemies on the edge, whacking them repeatedly with an item also works well.

Just watched the Quick Look out of curiosity, and I'm sort of not even sure why they had Brad there.
He has no interest in Scott Pilgrim, had apparently never even heard of River City Ransom prior, and says that he doesn't care for beat em ups.
I mean, if you're so jaded that video game references constitute "trying to hard" and old games that you enjoyed when you were a kid aren't fun anymore then it's a pretty safe bet you won't enjoy this game because it's more or less a $10 reskin of RCR.
Man, you guys were right, Giant Bomb WAS really down on this game. So frustrating to watch, so many retorts I had for so many comments... So completely ignorant of the source material, even.
And remember, 3 of the 4 main GB guys are pretty damn cynical/jaded to begin with anyway. Though Ryan gets a pass from me due to his new-found love for the Civ games.
At least they gave enough of an impression that if you like these sorts of games, you may like SP despite their own feelings on it.
So me and my friends beat what we assumed was the final boss of this game. We somehow squeeze out a victory by having one person go revive people when they get knocked out and we end up getting through it in about 45 minutes, only to continue on to another level, but we got so overwhelmed that we lost on the later level.
Then we go back to the map screen to find out that we have to redo that boss fight. Again.
Really? This game had to go ruin all the fun by doing that? It almost makes me sad because the game was so much fun, but my friends were pretty much like "screw this" after the game pulled that card.

Aren't all teenagers awkward?
Also, Scott Pilgrim is 23 years old, and you're an idiot.
Thanks for playing!
Cause holy shit. I went from not dying at all to making it out of stage 2 with 50 HP and 0 lives.

Bionic arms rock. Strength +50!
And now there is a goddamn Rik on the Marketplace.
Bought the crap outta that as soon as I saw it!
Yeah, but he's in the books, so... it sorta' makes sense. I'd like playable
I don't think

This is great! I'd love to see one set too the Scott Pilgrim Theme from the game.
If you haven't seen any of Paul Robertson's stuff before, let me assure you that you got off easy here.
What an original observation!
You should write for The Tonight Show with great material like that!

I am a freaking nerd.
There'd be no reason for XBLA to have it and PSN not to.

I guess I will have to tide myself over by seeing the movie again asap.
