So me and my friends beat what we assumed was the final boss of this game. We somehow squeeze out a victory by having one person go revive people when they get knocked out and we end up getting through it in about 45 minutes, only to continue on to another level, but we got so overwhelmed that we lost on the later level.
Then we go back to the map screen to find out that we have to redo that boss fight. Again.
Really? This game had to go ruin all the fun by doing that? It almost makes me sad because the game was so much fun, but my friends were pretty much like "screw this" after the game pulled that card.
Again, all part of the point. Believe me, I was pissed at long the last level just KEEPS. ON. GOING. and is SO. MUCH. HARDER. than anything up until that point.
And then I had flashbacks to like a million old games that pulled that exact same bullshit. I appreciated the game's bullshit, because it was an homage to the bullshit I had to put up with as a kid.

Yeah, I think my friend was having Metal Slug 3 flashbacks or something just by how the insanely difficult thing the game wants you to do.
I'm only assuming that grinding and getting all the books makes this alot easier but still, such a punch to the face that it doesn't even SAVE after that stupidly long fight.

If that's the fight I think it is, I had the same problem, except I didn't even get past the boss first time.
I assume you mean Gigadeon. If not, don't click the next spoiler.
I found out after that loss that about one screen before the fight, I had walked right past the sword, "Power of Love".
A single swing can hit at least half a screen away.
The level up bonus that makes you hit with weapons faster kept him more or less stunlocked.
He died in less than a minute without landing a single hit.

Step 1) Go play the original River City Ransom
Step 2) Did you have fun?
If yes, you will probably enjoy this game. It is unflinchingly old school to the point where it retains some stupid outdated mechanics and it will not hesitate to cheap you to death by surrounding you and flinch locking you until you die. But it's still a lot of fun if those things aren't going to ruin the whole experience for you.
That said, I'm having a blast with it but I need to make my roommate sit down and play it with my because there are so many spots where a second player would make things easier.

Well, we knew it had something to do with:
THE POWER OF LOVE!! Sword. But you see, my idiot friend ran up to him with the sword then got punched off like an idiot. Thus we lost the sword and we ended up doing it the hard way.
I've played through the first stage a few more times. Scott is at level 13 or 14 now! The new moves make things a little easier, especially with the bionic arms, but I still get stomped some times. Doing the counter thing is hard. I guess the window for when to push O is very small. I still get walloped by random mooks. You can get stuck in a flinch/get hit/flinch/get hit loop that can take a third of your health!
Grand slam and finally being able to hit dudes on the ground, the head jump and somersault attack are all awesome.
How does character progression work in this exactly? Namely single player vs. multiplayer. If I play this single player and get Stills to level 5, quit, and then later my friends are over and we fire up four player, will Stills be level 5 for whoever picks him? Everyone else will be level 1? Anyone have any specifics on how the persistence is across multiple sessions with different amounts of people playing?
Will the same levels be unlocked?
Also, what about money/items? And the one-time video store late fee unlock? Is that a per-character thing? Or per game?

When you play, you play from your profile. So if you play and level up every character to level five, whenever you play off your profile, friends or not, every character you can pick will be level five. Everybody else plays off their profile. Your characters are only for you, basically.
So everyone who plays needs to make a profile on my PS3? Do we have to do that from the System menu or can that be done in the game? Is it possible for everyone to just play under my profile or is it a one per affair?

Yea it's retarded, you have to make a bunch of profiles in the ps3 menu.
That sucks. Thanks for the info, guys. I think I'll just make like "Dick 1", "Dick 2", and "Dick 3" accounts for multiplayer so that people can just always play a leveled up character on one of those accounts across gameplay sessions instead of everyone wanting their own name/profile.

Party games with execution problems make me sad.
Well, actually other people can log in as "guest" and get a level 1 character.
So, apparently there's a code to unlock the radio tower (which is actually the sound test area), that requires some form of input on the score ranking screen. Reading other peoples attempts, they've blindly pressed L1, R1 and the d-pad, and managed to unlock it without knowing the combination.
I'm guessing it has something to do with highlighting certain numbers. I've tried the Sonic 2 level select and the safe code from Final Fantasy VII, but had no luck with those.
EDIT - I'm completely wrong; someone's found the code - L1 L1 R1 R1 L1 L1 L1 R1 R1 R1 L1 R1. No idea what game it refers to, though.

Right, but their progress isn't persistent between sessions, is it? If I make guest accounts, then at least friend B can play next weekend using the level 8 character that friend A leveled up this weekend. Something like that.
So I just unlocked the One Man Army trophy by using my already leveled up and game completed Scott to go straight to the very last section in the game, skipping the whole beginning of Stage 7. In case you folks were looking for that trophy, it's very possible that all you have to do is win the final fight against Gideon on the hardest difficulty, you might not even have to bother with the rest of the game.

Makes sense to me. Retro Game Challenge did stuff like that: issue challenges and not care HOW you did it.
...why did Pause and Main Menu codes have to go away?

I've resorted to online guides to figure out what shop items do before I actually buy them. Stuff that give +HP and +GP, those are just one time use items, right? Or are they permanent stat buffs? Like, a potion as compared to an item that raises the amount of HP total.

Man, Pattel is such a joke once you realize that the demon hipster chicks doesn't teleport to the lowest part of the stage.

Huh. Why the hell would I need an HP boost of 230 when my max HP is like, 100?

Paul Robertson posted quite a few animated sprites from the game in his Livejournal. I'd link it, but a lot of the other content there is incredibly NSFW (or your mind, for that matter.) It's easy enough to find with google, though.

Because Defense also raises your max HP.
Seeing those sprites just makes me realize that the game would possibly look way better on DS and I would totally buy it on DS.
