Hmm, more ice powers may make me want to dust off Yukiko and take her for a spin again. I think my biggest gripe was that I couldn't find enough non-ice powers that fit with what I wanted thematically.
Have the archetypes been tweaked any since what was first posted about them on the CO website? I was kind of bummed that there wasn't a pet focused archetype ala CoH's mastermind.

There isn't a pet focused arch-type.
But with the new update, you can literally win fights by the power of zerg, provided you pick up the right powers using the custom power selection system.

Yup, there's definitely the kekekezergrush factor now. Munitions bots, drones (if you're crazy like that), and like 4 different Circle summons that you can unbind with an advantage. Oh, and there's zombies and wolves and nightmare pets and shit to summon for extra temporary muscle.
The necessary advantage on the circle pets is kind of bullshit, but hopefully that'll be adjusted at some point.

Don't forget the new darkness pet powers. One power of which happens to be a literal zerg rush, as it spawns a crap-ton of shades to attack your enemies.
I hope they give us the option to customize the shadows as "The Darkness" style monsters at some point. I could have some fun with that power.
Edit: Actually, having more anti hero, "The Darkness" style powers would be awesome. We've already got like half of the powers already spread throughout the various sets, and the aesthetics of some areas of Demonflame and Vibora Bay are spot on for the actual comic/game series. Might as well go full tilt.
I mean, imagine playing the CO version of this out, sans the gore:
I wish I could find an actual video laying out all the powers, that didn't have shitty rock music overlaid over it. Part of the charm of the game is the sounds the powers make, and how well they mesh with the character concept.

Does this game have servers or is it one large instanced world?
It's one large instanced world with a number of major zones. Worldwide, no regional servers for players.

It should be said that when you change zones the server will prioritize which instance to place you in by first checking to see if any of your friends or super group members are also in the zone, and if so you go to that instance.

So when this goes F2P I'll probably come back and give this a second try. It really sounds like they're reworking a lot of things that I had issues with at launch.
Hows the balance of the game right now?
Also did PVP ever become fun?

In the paid version, balance is reasonably okay. There aren't any powers that are way out of line anymore; the whole whack-a-mole nerf cycle has slowed to a crawl, though I hear that Might has been nerfed (or is in for a nerf, I forget which). Current balance "issues" mainly stem from the open-powers system allowing knowledgeable players to dominate using intelligent power choices.
Some of the new PvP modes are fun. The Bloodmoon werewolf/hunter event is fun for awhile, and the zombie survival instance is neat. The old FFA/team DM/base matches are still the same old shit. You either have a pre-made team with intelligently-powered characters, or you get rolled by one.
I still have a launch copy I never got around to activating so I'm thinking of hopping on sometime in the next month, after the F2P stuff gets sorted a bit.
Did they ever fix the issue with the XP/leveling curve? And what is the game like when you hit the cap now?

The XP/leveling appears to be fixed. While there's some later raid-like instances and the adventure packs, it's still not focused on the endgame as much as other MMOs.
Try it later though, it's worth a look.

So, for some one who's coming back to this for F2P (not because I didn't want to pay, only because my buddies didn't), and hasn't played since release month.... what should I know?
So, is there a full write-up of what is and isn't included in free-to-play vs.. uh.. whatever is available other than free-to-play (microtransactions? subscription?)
Also, if I have a free month from buying the game still, and I made a fully original character outside of the archtypes, will I lose access to that character once my free month goes away?
EDIT: Oh hey, there's an FAQ on the website. God I've gotten lazy in my old age.
This I found interesting (since I have no idea where I stand in their new system.)
Q: If I decide to downgrade from Gold to Silver, what happens to all my stuff?Top
Characters will remain when switching from Gold to Silver. However, players will not be able to play them until either they re-upgrade to Gold or convert them into Silver characters. Exactly how this conversion will work is still being determined. Please note that we never delete character data. If a Gold Member cancels his or her subscription and decides to restart it at a later date, all of that member's characters and associated items will be intact.
You can still download the demo from the Steam client though.
Do you have a direct link?
Demo page now bounces back to the front store page and regular Champions Online now says:
Champions Online: Free for All will be live at 6:00 a.m. Pacific on January 25!
In order to upgrade our game and website to better accommodate the imminent arrival of the free-to-play Champions experience, we must perform some necessary maintenance. Please expect the website and game environments to be inaccessible as we perform this maintenance.
Thank you so much for your patience. Until we're live, feel free to check out our forums, which are unaffected by this maintenance.
We'll be back up at 6:00 a.m. Pacific when Free for All launches!

Yeah, i'm getting bounced back to the home page as well. I'm assuming the download is down because of this maintenance because I downloaded it earlier today with no problems.

I'm looking to get back into this. I very much enjoyed it at launch, stuck with Power Armor build and it was great, although PA was slightly gimped then, but still fun and viable.
Anyone around here play Power Armor and want to give me a rundown on some changes to the power set? I haven't played since about 6 months after launch.
I'm going to be starting some new characters tomorrow. Does anyone use the "PA CO" channel? I try talking in "Penny Arcade" sometimes but I just confuse all the STO players there. X)

I do when I play, which isn't often enough. I've been playing WoW lately cause of Cataclysm. Lots of new content to explore in old venues. Just tell the STO players that you're using a holodeck program/game called Champions Online at Memory Alpha or Quark's in DS9.

So I was under the impression that Gold players (subscribers and Lifetimers) got an expanded set of Archetypes as opposed to the freebies. Yet when I log on a friend's Lifetime account, there's nothing but the Silver ones.
Did Cryptic really, really not even bother making a set of Gold Archetypes for the F2P launch?
