After this spoof video was made people started to request an actual rainbow travel power, and they haven't stopped asking for it. After the Light Speed reskin of Super Speed was made, people really started saying "Ok, so why can't you do this with Flight?!?"
Just got an email from Cryptic announcing their plans to really blatantly rip off Going Rogue.
... wasn't Shadow Destroyer supposed to be evil alternate universe Defender already? You can't have two evil alternate universe Defenders as primary antagonists!

Except you've got it ass backwards. And they're also taking material from the Champions books, I believe. Which is by far, older then CoX. Which in turn ripped the idea of "evil alternate dimensions" off from an unfathomable number of comic books dating back decades in time.
Shadow Destroyer is the evil alternate universes "leader" so far as we know. In the Moon Arena mission, you take him on, and I assume, banish him back to his home dimension. For whatever reason, the heroes are taking the fight to his empire this time, in his home dimension, and looking to kick his ass and (I assume.) finish the job.
It's not even as though Multifaria was something they could point to in an existing Champions book and say "No, we're ... we're just doing something from the books". This is something invented out of whole cloth to mimic the genre leader.

It's not like it's a big spoiler either, if you were paying attention to chat about the game pre-release, and post-release.
Between the mention of the Qliphotic "zone" prior to/shortly after release, Shadow Destroyer, the end of the arena instance, and everything else, it was damn obvious we'd be dimension hopping someday. Probably to Shadow Destroyer's doorstep.

Besides, City of is essentially Champions setting after decent plastic surgery and having the serial numbers filed off.
There are bound to be similarities.

Well I'm certainly enjoying it enough to justify paying for a month. But I'm not able to justify paying for a lifetime subscription. At least it still seems to be pretty well populated.

I just started playing it and I absolutely adore it. It totally blows WoW out of the water for me which really shocked me.
WoW was never very attractive to me either, but this game is right up my alley. Probably because it's fun in most of the same ways Freedom Force was fun. If only there was more Man-Bot.

WoW was attractive to me but I played way back when it first came out. I just got back into it and the challenge has been completely bled out of the thing. The game holds your hand the entire way through now. It's a complete yawnfest.

In Champions, I can actually die.
Not to be negative or anything, but there isn't really any challenge in Champions. By which I mean that with the right build basically everything can be done solo with 0 risk (I guess this wouldn't apply if I wasn't a compulsive power gamer)
That having been said, the game is still quite a bit of fun to play. Especially Demonflame and latter portion of the Resistance packs.

You can power through any system. The more important thing to consider over whether or not there is a challenge (which is manually adjustable via power selection and in other ways) is whether the game is fun or not.

The only power you need to survive pretty much anything as you're leveling is Regen.
This is less true against some of the larger Cosmic foes though, as Regen does not take large alpha strikes well.

My reasons for playing a game will never include "find the perfect build to make it not fun". And there clearly IS challenge in Champions for me because I just said so.

I never said I didn't have fun with it, in fact I said it was fun spite of my power gaming. Which is more then I can say for a lot of games. As for the challenge thing, I personally feel that games should be challenging at all levels of player skill/power. Not just the middle.
Anyways, you like the game, and I like the game. So really this discussion feels a bit like were arguing over how we like the game, feels silly.

Pipe dream. People always break the system, often intentionally, and they are the loudest when it comes to shouting for changes that further break game balance.
Getting real balance in any multi-player game is really freakin' hard.

I don't know, I could see an MMO being legitimately challenging. Though not one with COs power system, as awesome as it is, it basically makes any real form of balance totally impossible.
Getting real balance in any multi-player game is really freakin' hard.
It is indeed. And what Blizzard figured out was, most gamers only CLAIM to love challenge, actually what they like much more is being consistently, gradually rewarded for simply sinking time into the game.
People love digital carrots much more than challenge. Actually, many gamers only claim to love challenge, and are the first to scream, pound their fists and claim the game sucks when they fail at something hard.
See City of Heroes and what people did when they were given content creation tools. They built mindless, repetitive, eyesore boxes of boss farms, which people grinded endlessly until their eyes bled with boredom, merely because it maximized their rewards.
People look for the easy path in any MMO. They want an easy path. They want to be spoon-fed, pampered and told exactly how to build the best min-max toon. When they nerf that build, they cry. When they succeed with that build, they tout their ePeen as if they just exhibited genuine "skill".
Gamers (myself included) are lemmings. We've been trained like seals to go in search of gold coins and rack up the highest score possible. The sheer monotony of 90% of Nintendo games prove that.
So yes, balance is really hard, but you only need to pay balance begrudging attention. Make your game such that it requires a great deal of time and investment to master, (but not a great deal of skill) and your game will win. See every FB game ever made, to see that theory proven beyond doubt.
These games aren't hard for a reason. If they were hard, people wouldn't like them, or at least not enough people would like them for the game to thrive.
I log into CO occasionally, I reverted to F2P. I think as a F2P game it is fine. I think paying for the thing is insane. I feel the same about World of Tanks. It's a fun diversion for an hour or so, but they aren't serious games that are worth paying for.

To be fair to Champions, if you play the adventure packs on the hardest difficulty, you'll often find yourself getting your ass kicked without a good group. There's also unique Very Hard only loot tables that you can only access by playing on the harder difficulty levels.
Resistance is a good example of both of these things. The only way to get the adventure pack unique wings is to beat it on the highest difficulty level. And Shadow Destroyer will easily two/four shot anyone who isn't geared for that difficulty level, too.
Nevermind the fact he has millions of HP, mobs he can call in, and is just one part of a multi-phase boss fight that you can apparently be locked out of if you die (I've not seen this myself, but others have claimed it happens.).
Really, if CO has a downside, it's that the default difficulty level most people run the instances on is very low. A normal difficulty dungeon run really doesn't pose much of a threat to most people, outside of certain encounters.
Alot of the people i've talked too in-game who think the game is easy-mode never do very hard runs, of say, Resistance, Vibora Bay's dungeon, or Demonflame. And thus never realize that there is actually a very hard game underneath all the easier stuff.
Add onto that that certain instances (Moonbase Arena.) don't really reward you yet for harder runs, meaning there's no reason to do them at that level, and I can see why it has that perception. Though I think they're looking at updating the instances to fix that, soon.
The default difficulty setting is perfectly adequate for the archtype builds. It is inadequate for a well designed free-form character, particularly after the mid 20's.
And when I say "well-designed" I do not mean broken, exploitative or cheesy builds. I just mean builds that cover offense, defense and self-healing and make good use of the power synergies that exist in the game. It is quite possible to be thematic, and extremely powerful (from a PvE perspective).
Now, I have some characters who are more fragile than what would be considered optimal, but still steamroll most PvE content. And those characters have their hands full on normal difficulty Resistance.
If I take my Force/Might Invulnerability character in on normal difficulty on the other hand, I will fall asleep.
If the last 10-15 character levels of CoX weren't horrifically slow and grindy, then people wouldn't have built those farms. I happen to like leveling characters in CO a lot more (and I have 5 max level characters so far) because once I get to the later levels my progress can still be measured in game hours not in-game days.
Nevermind the fact he has millions of HP, mobs he can call in, and is just one part of a multi-phase boss fight that you can apparently be locked out of if you die (I've not seen this myself, but others have claimed it happens.).
I've watched it run twice and been in one run and, normally, if you die at that boss, yes, you're locked out for the rest of the fight. However, there is some invisible hole in the wall keeping you out that I saw a player find once.
Ok, so since this game is free now I reinstalled it. Apparently some things have changed! Other than like half of the costume pieces being locked away from my new characters now, what has changed?
I see some of the class names have changed (and I can't find power armor?) but are they actually different?

There aren't archtypes for all the powersets now, some powers are only available to freeform characters at this time (Power Armor being one of them).
Additionally, not all of the archtypes are free.
They've done a lot of revamping of power sets and individual powers, too numerous to mention here. They've also added a lot of powers to sets, and added a new set (Heavy Weapons).
I had the same problem on a number of free MMOs on my old PC. Games like Perfect World and others would randomly hardlock my system within 10-30 minutes, regardless of quality settings, drivers or heat. I never did find a solution.
