: "...I always feel a little bit dissapointed when I'm playing these mature titles on Nintendo platforms I feel like I could just get so much more if I was playing it on a different system."
~ when asked about her (Morgan Webb) opinion regarding the possible mature titles currently being used as tech demos by 3rd-Party developers on the new Nintendo 3DS.
Wot.
You know what the scariest game I played as a kid was? Contra III: The Alien Wars. The game starts with a some major city getting fucking annihilated, and you're running & gunning through it's burned-out ruins for the first level (during which a shrieking pilot of a fighter jet comes flying right at the camera before jettisoning a pair of hydrogen bombs).
How about Metroid? The Castlevania franchise? Resident Goddamn Evil?
Yeah, there are successful party games & some cutesy games that appeal to wider demographics on Nintendo consoles - but the key word there is successful. Other gaming platforms have had cutesy & party games too; they've just more or less all flopped.
So if someone is watching you play over your shoulder, say, would the screen be fucked up, or just in 2D?
Blurry, as if you were watching a 3d movie and took off your glasses. So no, there isn't some sort of built in privacy screen that will allow you to watch porn on the subway.

At first looking at that image, it seems backwards to me, but the barrier goes between the screen and the backlight then? My understanding had previously been that it was between the screen and the eye, but I guess it makes just as much sense that way.
[edit] Actually, thinking about it, would putting it between the screen and the backlight get you a longer viewing distance for a shorter space between the screens? That may well be the case..
I was out all day yesterday and was too tired to look online when i got home, so I just woke up to all of this.
I'm not even sure how to process any of this. I feel like the guy on a game show in that vacuum tube with hundreds of dollar bills flying around him and he has to grab and flail madly to catch them.
I saw the picture of the 3DS, wrinkled my face a little, but then read about the details and games and my wife made a face at me because I was cackling so loudly.
I feel a bit bad about my DSi purchase now, though, but holy balls. No price yet, though, right? Is there a specific launch yet?
No price, no official launch date but I think speculation has it middle to late of next year.

Better start grinding up GameStop credit, then! My god, it's full of stars. I'm still not sold on the whole 3-D thing in any media, but I also haven't seen it in action in a movie, admittedly.
Fucking Etrian Odyssey, Dragon Quest & FF, Harmonix, Pilotwings, Layton, Star Fox and more ... Man. I've actually been gravitating back to handhelds the past month or so after a little hiatus, but motherfucker, I might not need my home consoles anymore.
Bascially the 3D works because it's using a trick of pixels and the lag time in your brain for processing light?
ie. It's fooling your brain into seeing 3D because of the way our visual cortex processes incoming images. 3D via extrapilation?
Nope, though I can see why you'd think that from the picture. It isn't a shutter thing though, it's a solid barrier. Look at your computer screen. Now keep looking at the screen, but put your hand between your face and the screen (parallel, like you are waving "Hi" to the screen) , but slightly to the side.
Keep your focus on the screen, but notice your hand. See how it looks as though you are both seeing your hand, and seeing through your hand at the same time?
Move your hand so it is more centered in the screen. Turn it like you are going to karate-chop the screen. Continue to maintain focus on the screen.
Close one eye. Now close the other, but open the first. Alternate, like you are winking with both eyes. Notice how different parts of the screen are available, and not-available to either eye?
This is the principle it is using. On a way small, and high-tech scale.

What's sad is now that I've seen the Purple one...it's the only one I want. Is it going to be a launch color?
Yeah, I have always been on board for augmented reality, and now it's going to be 3D and make the DS look like an empty frame? Moving the DS around to aim at your own face as it laughs maniacally? Craziness.

What're the dimensions of the 3DS, compared to the DSi XL? Every photo I've seen of the 3DS with hands present in some way make it seem really small. Handhelds that are too small are a pain to hold. Literally. My hands hurt after a short time.

Since I have an XL, despite its awesome it's really awkward to hold with one hand, as opposed to the Lite which uh...wasn't

Well, it's awkward for you, and likely other people. We're all unique y'know.
The smaller a handheld is, the more my hands feel cramped up trying to play the motherfuck.

Size (when closed):
Approximately 5.3 inches wide, 2.9 inches long, 0.8 inches tall.

Approximately 8 ounces.

Final design is TBA.
As we've seen from tech demos alone, the 3DS can easily reproduce PSP-level graphics. The addition of the nub means even with the touchscreen completely removed from the picture, the controls are now exactly a one for one recreation of the PSPs. The top screen (which is also wider like a psp screen...hmmm...), in addition to being the 3D one, could play any psp game unchanged (much like the DS did for GBA games). Hardware limitations are now non-existent for 3rd party developers to port their games, and on top of it they can now cross-platform produce any PSP game for the 3DS. Every 3rd party developer is developing for the DS anyways because it's the biggest game in town, and Sony has had huge issues keeping 3rd parties interested in developing for the PSP. Now every 3rd party can cheaply port all their (mostly non-selling) PSP games over, slap a "3D" on the end of the name, and suddenly their games are playing to an exponentially larger install base. This is probably why so many third parties are happy- their dead end PSP games get new life on the 3DS. Multi-platform development is now possible for portables- but only in one direction. Unless Sony comes out with a two-screen system and on top of it adds some sort of hardware addition the 3DS can't reproduce (second analog nub), they're at best gonna have a DS clone with a vastly smaller install base. If they go too different to try to make platform exclusives a necessity they risk destroying the already-shakey relationship with third parties they have. They're basically in a catch-22 of Nintendo's making, and I love it.
I swear to god the 3DS was in every way a "fuck you" to the PSP. Every addition that the 3DS has was meant to fuck it over. Jesus Christ Nintendo is so fucking awesome
It's hilarious that Nintendo won last gen by going different, and they're gonna win next gen by homogenizing.
Er, in handhelds, yeah. Xbox Vs. Wii Vs. PS3 the Xbox comes out on top in a variety of ways.
Now, every other handheld ever, Nintendo has kicked the ass of. But the Gamecube wasn't exactly a rousing success in the same was the Xbox was.

Are you putting your index fingers on the shoulder buttons? Because that's the only way I can see how you can get cramps from holding it. That or holding the thing close to your face instead of leaving it further away.

I never have my fingers on the shoulder buttons for anything, that's a dumb way to hold any controller / handheld.

Although sales wise, both of hardware and software, it's no contest
Either way yes, this was about the DS, not the Wii
Er, I looked it up and uh..."The GameCube sold 21.74 million units worldwide" as of 2010 according to nintendo. 24+ million (as of May 10, 2006) according to Xbox. (Via wikipedia)
I mean I may be wrong but that's the data I'm seeing...
In a similar vein to the MGS demo we have Resident Evil: Revelations from Capcom. No gameplay environments, but what we do have is a cut-scene featuring dynamic camera tweaking, zoom options and a pause button for appreciating some of the more spectacular shots.
What impresses here is that it looks as though Capcom has tried to scale back its Resident Evil 5 models to work on the 3DS. While backgrounds are very simplistic, those player models are astonishingly well-realised and very good-looking. The fact that the Chris Redfield model is readily recognisable from his HD adventures speaks for itself.
Speaking of which, it is interesting to point out that the 3D depth slider doesn't work for movie playback, where you effectively get a choice of watching in either two or three dimensions with no tweaking of the latter. This effectively confirms that the 3D slider is computationally altering the twin in-game 3D cameras on the fly in actual 3DS software, and that the 2D mode most likely works simply by turning off the output to one eye and adjusting the cameras accordingly.
Looking at the Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil tech demos, it appears the games, when compared to their console counterparts have just a slightly more optimized polycount but retain all the same shaders, normal maps, and specular as the console versions which is totally awesome as shit.
Man... I have to figure out how to justify getting this to my wife. I was completely done with Nintendo, and then they pull this amazing portable system out - which I was thoroughly ready to dismiss - and it's become a must own.

Its a trick because its a flat surface, but I don't think it has to do with lag time in your brain but rather how we process depth.
