Speaking of customization, just how customizable are the abilities and classes in MP? Could you, say, create a "heavy" jetpack with lowered ground speed and faster, longer flight and a "light" jetpack with normal ground speed but slower, shorter flight? Because that would allow for some pretty ludicrously varied gameplay.

Watching a team jetpack-hop with constant AR fire, hover slowly but steadily with heavy shields, and zip across the map into combat all at the same time would be both bizarre and rad.

You'd be able to create those classes in custom games, but not in Multiplayer games.

Apparently MW2 taught Bungie one important lesson; when you give players total control over their loadouts, you open the door to all sorts of douchebaggery.

EDIT: 7 on the 7th is now up, for people who still need Lightswitch.

Man! I didn't receive my lieutenant on hitting the 70 exp mark. I'm assuming it has something to do with the Spartan Officer achievement, which I didn't receive as well. Is there any way to rectify this?

Carney insisted on placing Phalaenopsis and Bonsai trees all over the map. I only had time to make the Phalaenopsis. You will see lily pads with lotus flowers, Koi in the Koi ponds, and no Bonsais. Also, since we could afford it, this map has THE BIGGEST cubemap (reflection map) in the game.

That sucks. I don't know why Bungie never patched that or just made it so the servers just constantly attempt to award you the Spartan Officer marking.

On one hand, there's enough headroom for Halo Waypoint stuff that you don't need the achievement. On the other hand, it screws you out of Recon and 1750/1750.

All I really care about having it for is the Forge stuff. Letting players do that level of customization for regular multiplayer didn't even occur to me because it's such a clearly bad idea. Besides, the idea would be custom maps designed to work with those custom classes anyway rather than just making yet another identical Blood Gulch clone with your custom classes being the only difference.

Well, and if you let players customize the loadout for every game mode, everyone will just gravitate to the One True Loadout.

Yeah, but that's not what I'm talking about that. I'm talking about map + gametype-specific custom classes. The only thing the player gets to pick is one out of whatever classes are available, not they get to bring their own custom class. So yes, you could have dumb kids making awful UB3R classes for their special maps, but you could also have people actually thinking things through and creating balanced custom class selections.

Anwyay, I thought the only thing the player could customize was armor stuff and the abilities/loadouts were locked into the map and gametype?

    Armor stuff only, yeah.

Loadouts I think are defined solely by the gametype. They weren't clear on if you could define them in the map.

Well, we know that you can have players spawn with no armor abilities and have them pick them up within the map. Wouldn't this imply that you can customize the armor ability pickups like how we can tweak custom powerups in Forge now? The question then would be if you can customize each pickup individually to create different jetpack classes.

    Somebody taking inspiration from Tribes?

Hopefully there's a custom game option to remove map AAs though

That was sorely missing from Halo 3 - if you didn't want Overshield or Camo, you had to forge them out and have a separate map file eating up your 100 slots. This also meant nobody ever really used the Custom powerup because it could not be defaulted to 'off' for gametypes and just simply turned on for the appropriate gametypes

Well, I do know that abilities can be modified, but I don't know how much and for which mode. I remember reading a Bungie statement talking about how a group of people had used ability options to make the jetpacks run infinitely (and also give themselves infinite rocket ammo).

If you can only do stuff like make abilities default duration or infinite, well, that means variants of the same ability for different classes is pretty much out. But remembering that bit about the jetpacks made me wonder about the customizability of abilities in general. If the customization isn't there, oh well; if it is, that's just even more bonus awesome.

That gamestop event seems like a hit or miss based on what store. The store I went to didn't have any option to play games. The video started repeating the same crap and people got all antsy about another 45 mins trapped in a store. Luckly they went ahead with the drawing so I got to leave early. No prize though, about 35 people total.

As for the tips and tricks video, it was somewhat useful, I didn't know about the jump spots. What I'm always more interested in is how the good people set up controls. I'd really like to know for Halo Reach so I can start getting muscle memory started on the campaign. What layout, and what number sensitivity?

I use bumper jumper. It seems like a good way to get ready for Reach. RB is melee for both bumper jumper and default Reach controls (my favorite), so you can get used to that now. LB is jump in Halo 3, Armor abilities in Reach. It's not the same move, but it is an important one, so you might as well get used to hitting LB a lot. The aim sensitivity will be the same in Reach, so just use whatever you use now. The general consensus is to have it as high as you can and still be accurate. You will get screwed over in melee combat with low sensitivity. It's not worth having high sensitivity if you start missing at long range... or lose track of people close range because you are spinning too fast.

I agree, the Reach default controls felt the best, even though I also use bumper jumper in halo 3. Much more convenient to have AAs as a bumper instead of jump, especially for jetpacks and armor lock.

If you just trying to get ready for Reach, walkie talkie is also pretty similar to the default scheme. Still RB to melee, and you still jump with A. You might not use LB much unless you play Big Team, but all the other controls will be the same as in Reach.

And apparently the methane tanks that Grunts carry can be ignited, causing them to whip the Grunts around the map for a few seconds, ultimately climaxing in a small explosion, meaning that Grunts can now be used as makeshift grenades.

Ok I just feel bad for those guys at this point. They should really have a crack team of highly capable grunts in reach to fuck around with the spartans, maybe even scare them a little. Maybe they could have a token clumsy elite for comedy.

Can't say I'm particularly happy with that thing with the Grunts and methane tanks.

I know the Covenant aren't supposed to be the most innovative enemies, but it's pretty ridiculously obvious that turning the majority of your footsoldiers into potential flying grenades is a pretty awful plan. Yeah, I can buy something like a powerful round boring through the tank and causing an explosion, but the Covenant really couldn't be bothered to have individual methane storage cells to keep a single exploding Grunt from wiping out half an assault wave fifty feet away?

Obviously flying Grunts looks a lot more awesome for gameplay, but it's just something that sticks out in my mind.

But one thing is for sure: when those Grunts hear about the human concept of "unions", it'll change the entire course of the universe.

"Sorry, Prophet, but that shipment of crystallonium coils isn't getting moved any time today. Yeah, the guys here could move that thing, but they gotta have a union rep and he won't be back until Throginday. It's outta my nubs."

Well if the consensus is that the default for Reach is the best that's cool, I thought it felt good during the beta but I've definitely seen the difference in Halo 3 default in MP. I can tell when I'm getting murdered due to my control scheme and sensitivity. My sensitivity is 5 now, I might be able to push it up 6. Sniper rifles are bit rough to use, but I feel better when someone comes close to me. Auto aim keeps throwing off my tracking I haven't seen an option for that, I like alittle but sometimes it'll move me a good inch on screen, especially when tracking 2 targets close.

There could be some mean grunts, they'd just have to learn to walk backwards, tossing nades over their shoulders. Maybe the methane tanks won't chain react as well, making it more visual flare.

Keep in mind that the Covenant also lost the war against Humanity because they couldn't wait two weeks to give the Elites their pink slips, and because it didn't occur to them that keeping High Charity within range of a humongous Flood infestation was a bad idea.

Apparently the concept of common sense is completely alien to the Prophets.

The Elites sit back and let the grunts charge ahead. If a methane tank explodes, it might take out some enemies, at worst it will take out other grunts (no big loss). This is also why they give grunts plasma grenades. Sure they might stick a fellow grunt, or kill themselves... it's an acceptable loss compared to the gain of what they end up killing with them.

Gameplay-wise, it will probably be a cool effect that happens on occasion. I doubt it will be something you can use to cause chain reaction explosions every time. Just look at the propane tanks in Halo 3, it's hard to get those to blow up in a specific area. I can see this being something they have always wanted to have in Halo, but didn't have the resources to make it happen.

I've been using boxer controls since Halo 2 and sensitivity at 10. The high speed makes it a lot easier to run around an enemy and smack them or hit someone as they are driving by. The new melee in Reach makes it even better. I think in the beta I killed 2-3 times as many people with the melee than with anything else. Yeah, I can't snipe at all, but that's why I have everyone else in TBK for.:P
