well, not just, Dad took her to the hospital this morning because she was having weird chest pains, but she was feeling fine by noon, and they decided to keep her overnight and do an angiogram the next day just in case
then at 3 pm they were all "oh, hey, that chest pain turned out to be a heart attack!"
so that's been a bit of a shock! she seems fine and not worried, but still, not nice to hear
let's talk about our parents having surprise serious conditions here I guess, I need to feel a little less shaken up about this
my mom is having back surgery in two weeks
it will supposedly get rid of all her pain but back surgery seems scary
also she will need to be in a brace for two months
It's good to hear she seems to be okay! Hopefully she stays that way.
My family is full of horrible medical issues, so I'm pretty used to being worried about it. Luckily nothing too bad has come of it to my immediate family yet.
My mother had a oophorectomy (I think that's the right -ectomy) recently, as she had a tumor on one (or both?) of her ovaries. Fortunately the cancer had not metastasized.
She noticed it because it had grown so large it was squeezing part of her intestines, causing a lot of blockage problems and stomach pain. I might be exaggerating but I think it was like 7 pounds. She felt noticeably lighter after it was removed, along with both ovaries and her womb.
My mom had some record sized ovarian cyst a few years ago.
Well, they called it a cyst, but once they saw it they didn't really know what it was. They thought it might have been a would-be twin that never came out, cause it had hair or teeth or something like that. Either way, it was large and burstable and trying to kill her.
She's a large woman (7 kids later, so hard to blame her), and was close to menopause, so when she gained a lot of extra weight around the middle and had weird abdominal pains, she didn't think anything of it until she was literally crawling into the ER.
She lost a lot of weight very quickly, but came out ok, although she has a huge cross shaped scar on her abdomen now.
My mom right now has an ear infection that doesn't want to go away and some kind of infection with her lungs or something. It's not bronchitis or a pneumonia, the doctors don't really know what it is. She hasn't gone to the ER yet, it's not that serious, she's just sick is all.
My parents have yet to be stuck down by a serious illness. My dad got a glaucoma scare but things seem ok for now.

My family is falling apart.
My dad just had knee surgery but thankfully it was minor, and he is already walking around a week later.
My mom will have to have knee replacementsurgery in a month and that is a 3 month recovery minimum, and she is 58 so it might be longer.
I was in a car accident about a month or so ago and have super bad neck problems but thankfully the insurance of the off duty police officer that ran into me is covering all of my physical therapy. I am getting better but yea, life is a bitch when your neck hurts and you cannot just stretch it out. This is why i didn't understand why stale wasn't hitting up insurance for his thing, i was pissed/am still pissed about my accident.
To top it all off my 12 year old dog got bitten by a black widow or a snake, they don't know witch, and her leg is shaved and in a cast, and she is wearing the embarrassing dog anti bite collar. That is on top of being 12 and deaf.
Anyhow, heart attacks suck. But she will be ok, especially since they caught it at the hospital.
Oh damn YaYa, glad to hear the worst seems to have passed.
Right now the only thing my mum has is a very bum knee which she has the option of having it operated on but hears the surgery may not fully eliminate the pain she gets ocassionally now. Sucks especially because she used to be an avid walker and jogger. It's still a risk with the condition the joint is in at the moment, but hey it's pretty minimal compared to everyone else in this thread.

my dog might have liver problems
he is not my parent but it is a surprise!
I win (lose) in the department of diseased mothers.
Something like 15 years ago, my mom had severe internal problems, and the only solution at the time was to remove the majority of her digestive system. Because of that, her stomach's about the quarter of the size of a normal person, and she's missing most of her intestines. She gets full after only a few bites of food, and most complex sugars give her terrible fits of nausea.
She also has anemia, and over the years has needed two blood transfusions to correct for it, and she's probably about due for a third. It was recently discovered that the previously mentioned digestive system surgery was a fucking idiotic thing to do, and has led to her body being unable to absorb nutrients very well, which is where the anemia comes from. She has chronic pain in her legs that doctors so far haven't been able to determine the cause of. More than one has told her that she's crazy and there's nothing wrong with her legs. Right now she's in the process of seeing a neurologist to see if it's the result of nerve damage caused by the anemia.
Also she has some benign tumors in her spinal cord because hey, why not!
In spite of this she still works about 50 hours a week. The doctor that discovered her vitamin deficiency was shocked she could even walk across a room because of how malnourished she is.
you should get a defibrillator i guess.
just keep the paddles glued to her chest in case of emergency.

I saw my dad for the first time in a while today. I remember as I child, I used to wear his penny loafers whenever I had to go outside for a short duration and they fit like clown shoes. Now they're a bit small on me. He was recently laid off, and he seems so old. I can't really express how I feel.
My mom went into surgery a little over a year ago for a mitral valve bypass/repair.
She use to be pretty active and athletic, but ended up severing a tendon in her foot, giant glass water bottle slipped. So that kind of changed a lot of what she could and couldn't do for a while. Time went on and she never really got back into being really active. She was tired pretty much all the time and would often come home and go to sleep. This went on for probably a good 5 or so years. I don't really recall when she went in to see a doctor initially, but they misdiagnosed her symptoms and had her on some meds that were doing more harm than good (may have just been the dosage). Turns out part of her heart was causing an irregularity.
So finally within the last year or so before she had surgery she was starting to feel more energetic, but decided that going in for surgery would be the best idea. The surgery was to have the valve replaced with an artificial valve that would last around 10 years. So everything is arranged and we head down to LA to get the valve replaced. The surgery goes really well. So well that they were able to repair the valve and didn't have to replace it. This was pretty fantastic news since it wasn't really even being considered at that point. Here we are a year and a half later and things are still going great and her health continues to improve.
Hope you guys are doing alright, YaYa. Heart issues are no fun.

Lingering infections are a thing that should be looked at. I hope she's on an antibiotic at least, and some sort of fever reducer (acetaminophen or ibuprofen or something like that).
Odds are the ear infection is a thing caused by the lung infection. Ears tend to do that whole sympathetic pain/illness thing and catch whatever else you have above the belt.
Keep an eye on your mom and watch for fevers. Infections can escalate FAST.

A heart attack is a pretty common reaction to seeing my huge Wang I suppose slipping it into her butt unannounced didn't really help with things either.
Last Sunday marked one year since my Mom slipped and broke her arm while we were out for a walk. We were walking down this one hill that was pretty steep, and no sooner did she assure me that she would be careful did she lose her footing. I asked her if she was okay and she said, "no, my arm is broken" all deadpan like that. I thought she was kidding until she got herself up and you took a look at her clearly broken arm. Yikes. When we went back a while later so she could get surgery the doctor asked what happened and she said that I pushed her down the hill for calling me a retard. The doc was all

He's already a doctor, so he knew what to expect, but he was actually EXCITED about it because the hospital had one of the robot surgeon machines to take care of it for him. He was pretty excited to have it operate on him. That, plus the afterperiod where he did radiation to get the stuff that spread, was definitely hectic for me. No more bad shit happening to my parents for a while, k?

Can't remember how old I was, probably around 7 or so, my dad (I think he was in his mid thirties at the time) was on a business trip in Utah, and was skiing on his downtime with a buddy. Gets short of breath and collapses, has to be rushed to the hospital.
One double-bypass later (not the most fun Christmas, considering there was a chance my dad could die) and the doctor basically tells him "Stop smoking or you'll be dead in 12 months." Before the surgery he smoked probably a pack a day, along with at least a 20oz or liter bottle of mountain dew, he wasn't the most healthy person.
Now he works out a few times a week and is in really good shape, though because of the surgery (and a few others he's had because he has an attraction to dangerous things) he's aged a good bit. But considering the alternative (him being in an early grave) it's not that bad, though!

A few months ago my ma left for the hospital at about 4 in the morning, called me at 5 to let me know in case anyone was looking for her (she really hates worrying people and is simultaneously overly proud). Said she was having really gnarly stomach pains
Turned out after a day of open examinations that her gall bladder was so massively infected (and somehow this had gone unnoticed by her doc?) that in another week or two she woulda been stone dead
Not a good couple weeks while she was in the hospital recovering from a removed gall bladder + infection, lemme tell youse!

Oh god I don't even want to think about my mother's potential for full breakdown.
They don't know what is wrong with her brain (could be MS ), and she just got a machine that forces air into her lungs because of her sleep apnea.
Also, I can see her memory going out the fucking window.
So I feel everyone's pain, keep up the good fight.

This is pretty hard for me to respond to. I want to say that its great that she seems okay.
But around this time last year my dad went to the hospital for a heart attack scare, went through a whole bunch of tests which told him that he was just fine, only to drop dead on a hunting trip a few months later.

Sleep apnea's not that bad a condition really, especially in your mother's case if they've got her on the CPAP. It's when they go "oh fuck lie down we're cutting your face" that you need to worry. The CPAP should help her get much better sleep, which helps with memory, so that might solve the "I can see her memory going out the fucking window" thing.
My fiancee just had the face-cutting treatment. He had soft palate reconstruction, tonsilectomy, turbinectomy, deviated septum correct, and uvulectomy. They may as well have peeled back his face and emptied his skull with a spoon a-la-cantaloupe.
When I was 11, my mom started being away a fair amount. First, for a couple of hours, then a day, then a few days. I never thought to ask, because I was 11 and I just thought it was standard mom stuff. One day, she finally sits me down and tells me that she's been diagnosed with two forms of cancer. She said that the doctors found it late, but still soon enough that they should have been able to take care of it. Notice the past tense there.
She died a few months later. Turns out that when she would go to the hospital at first, the doctors wouldn't pay her any mind because she had a history of drug problems (something she had long ago left behind) and they viewed it as someone just trying to get their fix. By the time they actually examined her, the odds were already against her.

Oh, I'm hopeful that the memory will improve. If sleep apnea is the cause of all of this bullshit I will be so very happy and relieved.
However, at this point I haven't seen a change for the better.

Seriously, moms are the greatest I hope they are happy and healthy and home very soon.
A couple summers ago my dad was feeling bad for a few days and then one day he was walking around and complaining of "a small pain in his side"
Mom got worried and took him to the hospital and it turns out HIS APPENDIX BURST AND WE WALKED AROUND FOR MOST OF THE DAY LIKE THAT
"small pain," Jesus Christ
They fixed him up though
