I think the "story buy-in" is whats going to make it easy for people to transition into this game. As was pointed out above, the "story" in WoW, unless you REALLY cared about or played the RTS's, is "meh". I mean I suppose its cool, but its not something ingrained in our minds. Star Wars on the other hand - we all know about Jedi, and Sith, and the world these characters are from; even if this one is set 5K years before TPM, most people "know" whats going on. I still to this day, when I'm bored, have to hop on WoWwiki to know what the shit is going on with these demons and Lich and whatever else is threatening Azeroth. Sith Emperor looking to destroy Jedi Council - I know exactly what that means.
If people are wondering how the Sith Empire will handle healing, it could easily be some kind of life stealing mechanic for force users and similar mechanics to the smuggler healing for agents.
I see it as very probable that the Medic-Kit Follower will be the most popular by far.
It would be awesome to have a companion character that was a Republic Army medic. So they'd be wearing trooper armor, but it would have green decals stripes on it and they would have med packs strapped all over them.
I see it as very probable that the Medic-Kit Follower will be the most popular by far.
Eh, doubt it. Most people are probably just gonna pick the coolest companion. Remember, massive herds of idiots are gonna play this game, just like most MMOs.
I was reading on the sith warrior juggernaut description last night and it mentioned something about "strengthening his resolve" and something about draining his opponnents... I'm begining to wonder if the sith warrior may be some kind of tank-healer hybrid. So it would take a combination of say... an imp agent and the sith warrior to keep the sith warrior tank alive. But that is just pure speculation, could be neat though.
But i do hope if we "need" heal-bots, that they are indeed bots... aka followers. I can enjoy being a healer, but casting the rank 4 healing touch for 4 hours straight can kiss my ass.
I see it as very probable that the Medic-Kit Follower will be the most popular by far.
"Very Probable" is an understatement. Unless the Medic Kits are grossly under-powered, I don't see them not being top choice for everyone almost exclusively. The only reasons I think of for not going with them is if you are leveling as a healer or tank, and you want the extra DPS.
But considering in most games (and for obvious reasons) DPS classes are the most played. And whats the main complaint about them? "Were too squishy". Well, now they have an NPC whose sole job is to heal them, so I don't see that changing anytime soon for TOR.
That being said, I'm rolling a tank trooper so I can laugh while I absorbing everyone's damage and /dancing around the room.
Edit: Reverse, I see your point of people picking the "coolest" NPC, but I personally see more people playing the "min/max" and "level as fast as possible" cards and taking whoever is going to allow them to get to endgame the fastest.

This is the fact I keep coming back to in order to control my nerd-thusiasm for the game: sometimes the worst thing about MMOs are all the other players.

Trust me, that's not what most people do. Most people just equip a dagger with spirit and spellpower and spam that Sinister Strike button all day long.

I'm an exception on this. Its a Bioware game, so I'm going to take the NPC that I like the most personality wise with me, not the one that best compliments my class. I'm kind of crazy that way. It could very well make the game harder, but hey, that can be fun too.
I think Bioware is banking on a huge number of people playing this game that already know what to expect from a Bioware RPG. I will roll with whatever NPC companion has the coolest personality to me, just like I do in any Bioware game. Levelling fast is the last thing I am going to care about in TOR. I am going into TOR treating it like just another single player KOTOR game, except this time me, my wife, and my friend who usually talk about how awesome RPGs are together will now be able to group together and play through some of the story coop.
All Bioware has to do is not have anything closely resembling WoW's arena pvp, and they won't have to play the balance game that Blizzard does with WoW. That's where the biggest problems WoW has always had stem from, trying to have PvE and PvP get equal preference in your game.
If TOR PvP is just a fun diversion I think it'll be much better for the game, and will prevent some of the balance worries that everyone talks about.
I hope 6-12 months of people paying monthly fees leads to Bioware being able to afford the servers they need to run free-roam space.
I have to ask what is the point? You want to be able to fly around space and explore? But for what purpose? Most of space is empty, and personally I feel like them designing a bunch of shit to put in space so people can fly around and explore would be a huge waste of money that could be spent on more content that has actual action and storyline.
Everybody is entitled to their own opinion obviously, but I personally hope the stuff we've seen of the space combat is as far as they take it, and maybe they just give it some fun rewards or make it so you do it while you're travelling between planets or something.
open space is probably not going to be considered, why change the space mechanic entirely after they've already designed one? If they do it, which I highly doubt would happen, it would probably be an expansion pack and come out 2-5 years down the line
I thought that dev interview posted above gave some really good insight into how they're considering space.
In the various star wars fiction as opposed to other sci-fi, you never see them flying around space just exploring. They're always trying to get from point A to point B, with combat and/or other shenanigans happening in between. So in a way, they're just being true to the subject matter.

Meh, space combat looks like the crappy arcadey/battlefront affair, that seals the deal, I won't be moving to this.
I guess I am just too old now and my "star wars" (original trilogy, X-Wing, TIE Fighter et al) has been taken over by the new generation (ep 1-3, cartoons, bright lights and family-friendly).

Space combat seems like a sideshow to the game itself to me. A lot of star wars games of the X wing Tie fighter era were on rails or in a really limited scope compared to games now
X-Wing/TIE Fighter might as well have been on rails. "Shoot down six Y-Wings, cadet." "Oh shit, now they sent in the X-Wings, shoot down four of those."
"Great job, now on to the next mission where you'll do the same thing, but you'll shoot some freighters first."
I mean I loved TIE Fighter, but let's not make it into more than it was.

They've announced some of the races, but it seems like every race is attached to a class. Zabrak Inquisitor, Chiss Agent, Twi'lek smuggler, blind jedi thing...
Does that mean that these races can ONLY be these classes? As in if I wanted to be a Rattataki, it's roll a bounty hunter or no dice?

That's what it sounds like to me, but they haven't really said either way.
The jedi video had a Twi'lek? Jedi. But then I am curious is that it for races or like every one wants people to believe their race is the next one

Also, quickly scanning the official forums (shoot me now), it seems that some Bioware folks have said that the races aren't tied to a specific class, but they're not yet ready to announce all the race/class combinations.
edit. Or maybe not?
edit2. Got rid of it because apparently it's from beta boards or something and I don't want to spread it around.

Oh no, a minigame in a new MMORPG isn't the same as a simulation game from years ago! Argh!
I mean really, if the only reason you wanted it in the first place was what a minigame attached to the real game might be, you probably shouldn't bother. When I see complaints like this I half-hope they just take out space combat entirely with the explanation of "cause you're all stupid".

I was really impressed with Star Wars Galaxies space component, mostly because I got a big yacht and it had windows on it and I could just hang out above a planet and throw awesome parties on my space yacht (which I decorated) with my pals
It was exactly as awesome as you'd expect it to be, and the inclusion of unique roles in ships like the YT-1300 meant that it worked exactly like it did in the movies
So in that sense I'm a little disappointed that they're not being that ambitious with their space component
But on the other hand, motherfuckin' Star Fox yo, I love that shit, and really, it'll make for a welcome diversion when I get sick of the ground combat and such
I'm curious how many of these sorts of minigames they're going to include in Old Republic!
Well, my issue isn't that a full space simulator is bad or anything. I'm sure it's fun.
It's that his comment was the equivalent of "welp, they didn't take pazaak in the direction I wanted them to, guess I'll not be picking up Kotor ever".
I'm beginning to think that the complainers would have been fine if they announced there would be no space combat at launch.
But because it has been announced and isn't a carbon copy of that game they loved years ago they're getting all bitchy.
I think it looks really fun considering I wasn't expecting anything. This isn't a space sim, it's an MMORPG. The fact that they've put some effort into keeping us entertained in space really impresses me.
Now I love me some SWG JTL. I loved flying around and blowing stuff up and taking on big ships with masses of guns and shooting people down. Would I love a TOR JTL? Hell yeah I would. Will I bitch and cry and moan TOR doesn't have a similar space system, instead opting for a more Starfox-esq system? Nope. I was fully prepared for there to be no space at all. The fact that have space in any way is a bonus to the ground game I'm actually going to be paying for.

I'm glad they are going this route. I do so love the old rail shooters. It's not SW, but Panzer Dragoon Orta is one of my all time favorites. And I loved Starfox and a number of the old Rogue Squadrons.
I think them doing it this way, they could add a lot of amazing scenerios that they'd really not be able to do if it was an 'open world' space flight sort of deal. I can see some crazy missions flying between crashing asteroids while being chased by a squadron of enemies. I'm looking forward to it.

This basically sums up my feelings on the path Bioware has taken with Space Combat. What they've implemented looks like a fun diversion. What SWG had was something entirely different, and I loved it.
Maybe a future expansion will upgrade it. Either way, it doesn't affect my buying decision. This is still a game I'm slavering for.
