Mm... without knowing exactly what phone and UI you have I'd say go into the contact itself and edit display settings. Alternately, change its group and edit group display settings.
Swype is pretty awesome. The Ars Technica article on it made me seek it out on the Droid X when I test drove it yesterday. I noticed that it didn't bring up words that end with a double of the same letter (boss), but I was simply testing it out and not trying to form sentences. If I actually wrote a sentence like "I hate my boss" then perhaps it would have picked up on it. Even if it didn't, you can still use the Swype pad like a normal touch keyboard, or even activate speech to text with it. I can't ever see myself going back to a physical keyboard after using it, though. I never tried a traditional touch pad, but I don't see myself even trying it after having used Swype.
Did you do a swirl on the letter you wanted to double?
Nope, the thought never crossed my mind. I didn't know about that gesture, anyway.
Speaking of Swype, the Droid 2's manual leaked and Swype is going to be included with the device. Seems like an odd inclusion for the Droid 2.
Also, I saw some new shipping info for the X and orders placed up to and including 7/28 will ship by 8/4. Of course I had to place mine a day after :x. Some people have been getting them earlier, though, so there may be hope for me getting mine late next week/early the following week. Verizon's website said it'd ship by 8/5 when I placed my order, and they seem to be doing a good job thus far with getting them out to people by the specified dates.

what seems odd about it? it wouldn't be the first hardware qwerty to also have swype. not even the second
How do I import only certain groups of my Google contacts? ie, friends, family, etc. I put in my google account info and it puked everyone I ever emailed....

There doesn't seem to be much talk about the Galaxy S, is it that much worse than the rest of the droid phones currently out? Canada gets a slim selection and the Galaxy S is the best andriod phone we're going to get soon. I'm still on the fence between it and the iPhone 4. I want to get a andriod phone, but not if it's a bad phone.
I get my Captivate tomorrow. I have high hopes for it. I've seen the Super AMOLED's in person, and man they are gorgeous. I had some heartburn from going AT&T, but the fact was I got the best deal from them even with the lack of unlimited data. I forgot I had some nice discounts on equipment and plans through my employer.

I just got mine about...8 hours ago. It's my first smart phone, let alone Android. It seems pretty sweet, the screen is nice definately, but I haven't tried anything HD yet to test it.

I know this may be kind of silly to ask, but I still don't know: what goodies can I get if I root my Incredible? A coworker of mine showed me the magic of setcpu and some ad blocking app, and I'm curious to know what else will be available.
Also, any specifics or tutorials on how to do it would be neat
SetCPU can do absolute wonders for your battery life. I have my Droid overclocked to 1100MHz when in use, but as soon as the screen is locked and off, it drops the frequency down to 250MHz. JuiceDefender doesn't need root, but you get some extra CPU tweaks with it if you're rooted. You need root to use a theme app like Metamorph. And I have to say that having Titanium Backup is a good peace-of-mind app, as it will back up literally anything you ask it to in terms of apps and their data.
The big draw to rooting is the ability to flash custom ROMs, like Cyanogen Mod or Bugless Beast or what-have-you. I'm running on a 2.2-based Smoked Glass rom with a bunch of little tweaks to improve performance, as well as some other things.
Rooting is good to take control of your phone. I know sometime in the near future they're going to stop officially updating the Droid, but so long as people still have them they'll be cooking up custom roms for them so long as the hardware can handle it. And if you push it, it's possible.
edit:
A little research shows that Incredibles are a tough nut to crack, and it doesn't really seem to be all that worth it right now unless you really want SetCPU. IIRC, Incredibles have a "switch" in them that gets flipped if you mess with the bootloader, and that'll void your warranty. As far as I know, the Droid doesn't have said switch, so you could unroot in the event a warranty is necessary.
Are there any Android Apps that let you simultaneously sign onto say, AOL instant messenger, yahoo chat, MSN, facebook chat, etc. all at once and communicate from a central program like Pidgin does on my PC?

Yes. Most of them require their own account for some silly reason, though. Trillian is going to be ported to Android as well.
I use Nimbuzz at the moment...Fring and Meebo are two other options.

I've had one for a couple of days now and am very happy with it so far.
Looking forward to Froyo, there's a leaked beta ROM of it available but I think I'll wait for the official release.
The rest are still rumor, but all of the rumors I've seen indicate August for the various devices. A UK Samsung rep said on twitter that the Galaxy S is getting it in September.
@ the posts towards the top of this page, you can un-root an HTC incredible. Instructions exist for downgrading the bootloader and ROM. You cannot, however, downgrade the radio software.

Sold. No really. I just bought it.
Why is it only letting max out to 800mhz. Hmm, wonder if I need a new kernel.

Ok guys, Visual Voicemail on Android (specifically the Captivate). Is the only available through Google Voice? Is there any way to get it through my normal phone number? It's the biggest thing between me and a Captivate right now, because Visual Voicemail is awesome and I don't want to give it up.
I mean I have a Google Voice account, but I don't want to have to make everyone call that number rather than my current number mostly because I know they won't bother.

This says it has it, but I don't know anything beyond that (like how to set it up). I know Verizon offers it for their Android phones, though.

AMOLED. I have one and yes it looks sweeeeet.
They are starting to make them with SLCDs due to the AMOLED shortage

HTC's Facebook sense thing does not do what you're looking for, if I'm not mistaken.
I de-synced mine from Facebook, added the people I wanted in my phone, then "linked" to facebook accounts so I could get pictures/etc.

in the 'extra' field HTC saves all the data for the linked facebook accounts (for picture and mobile n# which are automatically added).
If you want to (un)link contact pages from their facebook profile on the phone itself press the 'link' button top right of the contact card.
Desire - this weekend
EVO - Aug 3

"The coming few weeks" for anyone on a contract. Which probably means September.
Alternatively, if you get a notice on your phone this weekend about updating then it isn't!
This guide worked really well.
