Hey, how does Swype work when you're entering a word with repeated letters, like "happy" or "better"?
Do the tutorial, its actually really useful. Swype is really neat, but I do find my self "forgetting" where some of the letters I want to type are and have to restart. Its an odd feeling.
Typing with swype usually gives me performance anxiety... I get half way through a word and think "OH SHI What letter's next?!??!" I think I just need to use it and try it more.
Im going on a trip this weekend and plan to use my Evo's GPS to guide me, so I'm going to need some kind of car charger.
My girlfriend has a car charger with a miniUSB that fits in my phone, that she used with her old LG something or other. What do I need to look at to ensure this car charger won't hurt the Evo?
And as a total aside - my biggest gripe by FAR with the Evo after a couple months now is the INSANE brightness of the bottom 4 leds (home, back, menu, search). I know all HTC phones, when you look down into them from above, you can see the brightest, whitest 4 lights in the world.
Well, the one under my home button casts some sort of spotlight out the top. Two little pillars of white light, that on any sort of darkened background, when the screen brightness is just right, it washes out everything above the button. If anyone knows any way to correct this (by maybe turning down the brightness on the buttons, or something), it would help the OCD parts of me greatly.

I could be wrong, but with a car charger, in my experience, you are more likely to be underpowered and not charge the phone (see below), than over powered and hurt the phone.
Having used my Droid as a GPS for a long trip, especially since it's now summer, I'd say try to keep your phone out of direct sunlight as much as possible, and maybe near the AC. I had an issue when using the car mount with my phone overheating. It would then stop charging, and just drain the battery.
i bought a usb thing that plugs into the car jack from monoprice but it doesn't seem to work. at least it didn't work with my ipod usb cable.
so uh. don't buy that.
the pictures i saw of the G2 were interesting. kind had the look of the Nexus but the keyboard flipped and tilted out
You talking about this? I have a Gamestop branded one and it doesn't work either. I don't think they put out enough juice for the phones. USB charge is pretty slow anyway.
thats the one. you are probably right about the power. i actually have this thing from radio shack called an igo or something. basically its a car charger with changable attachments. i had it for my old phone but i can probably get a piece that fits my N1 and my wifes vibrant. heck maybe even the ipod.
You could switch between them manually; just long press the text field, and choose Input Method. There's no way to have it automatically switch, if that's what you want.
So I go onto eBay looking for a nice case for my Galaxy S. Are there any recommendations? Soft vs hard? Also I see this accessory packs that include batteries and stuff for super cheap. Are these a good deal?

As far as I know any mini USB charger should work. I have an HTC Incredible and I can use the same car charger for it and for my husbands Env. Also, my best friends Motorola Droid home charger works with my phone perfectly fine.
I know at the Verizon store they pretty much only sell the generic mini usb chargers that work with all mini usb phones, not any brand specific chargers. If you're nervous walk into the sprint store and look at the car chargers there, odds are they'd sell you the one your girlfriend already has.

This. A USB charger is a USB charger is a USB charger. I've been using a Motorola one (got it ages ago for my old RAZR) with my Touch Pro for years. They all output the same 5v with the same max amperage. Most phones never pull the full potential draw of any USB source anyway, as charging the battery that fast will cause overheating.
Anyway, the only real way a USB charger can damage your phone is if you get a particularly cheap one that puts out too high or irregular a voltage. Other than that you don't need to worry.
Something else I have been meaning to ask. Does anyone else's phone not wake up when it goes to sleep forcing you to restart it? Particulary Samsung Galaxy S's. I've had this phone for about a month and it has happened 3 times so far...

I've got the same phone and never had this problem. I did upgrade to a newer leaked firmware fairly early on which might have skipped the problem.

I have not encountered this issue with my S, but I've only had it for about 2 weeks.
but not all mini-usbs are teh same. the N1 is a mini-usb and the galaxy is a mini-usb. but its not the same, nor is it the same as my kindle which is also a mini usb.

Uhhh, if they're not the same they're not all mini-usb.
This is a picture showing the difference:
The N1 probably looks like neither of these. Thats because for a long time HTC has been using a proprietary port that looks like this:
While it looks different, it's really just a slightly modified mini-usb port with some extra pins for audio stuff. It will happily accept a standard mini-usb cable and charge off of it.

This has happened to me with my captivate. I will try to bring it out of sleep, hit the button a few times and then see the start-up screen. I unfortunately don't remember what I was doing when it happened but it has happened a few times. I've had mine about a month as well.
Yeah I basically got every cable I could imagine ever using for both my Droid X and the wife's Incredible at monoprice for under 10 bucks. That was like 2 car chargers, a micro-hdmi, and a 10 foot micro-USB cable. Top it off with two hard cases bought on eBay for less than 6 bucks shipped and we got every attachment for these things for less than the price Verizon charges for one car charger.

I use that as a my itouch charger in day to day use, but on long trips I use it as a charger/cradle for my phone that then doubles as gps. It's amazingly awesome. It has, of course, the ipod connection but also a standard usb slot and a headphone jack so you can run your android device (droid 2 in my case) directly into the speakers and charge it through the usb plug at the same time. Yes, it comes with the headphone to headphone adapter so you don't have to buy one. It's definitely the very definition of the all in one portable dock.
You're welcome. Go forth and journey, journey hard.

I wonder if it's possible with Tasker to do this?...

I ordered a Droid X today. won't be in for over two weeks but I figure in the mean time I can look into what I need for it.
the big screen sold me. also the droid 2's keyboard, while nice, bumps right up against the screen while slid out. meaning when I typed on the top row my thumbs were pushing into the screen area. I hope that makes sense, I found it quite uncomfortable. I'm sure one could get used to it but with that on top of the x's incredible screen I was sold.
edit - it ships sept 9th, I'll be able to install 2.2 on it, or will it have it at that time? entirely new to this. I know I can update it just not sure how that works. thanks.
Is there a way to merge contacts on my phone into my Google account? I know I can sync contacts between the phone and account, but I have contacts on the phone that I want added to my Google account. When the two sync, the contacts that are only on the phone aren't added to my Google account. I don't want to manually add them, but it seems like that's the only way to add them to my Google account. Additionally, I have extra info for contacts on the phone that doesn't show up in the account's info for that contact. Is there a way to make the two identical?
Hate to repeat myself but has anyone found any app that lets you control the amount of light from the bottom row of buttons on HTC phones?
My Evo is perfect with the exception of the fact that there's 2 beams of washing out white light coming off the top of the home button.
It's not bad enough to make me want to exchange it, but its bad enough that on white (offwhite) backgrounds you can clearly see it and its kind of distracting.
I just would love to tone down the led brightness so it goes away, or even turn them off altogether.

it is possible that tasker could handle automatically switching keyboards, but i'm not positive

I'm also looking. One of those mall booths near my work said they'll be getting some in on Friday. Ebay has a bunch too.

Do I get a third replacement? do I leanr to live with it? is there any way to fix it?
that's fine with me. as long as I can get it, which I obviously can. quite pleased with the timing! thanks.
i think it will depend on whether you can acces your contacts online
