I just rooted my Incredible and holy cow does this thing fly now. YouTube used to run really slow and now it loads HD video super fast
Did you end up flashing Sky Raider to it MrDelish? Or was it just root increasing your speed?
Edit:
@Bullio - Download a program called UIA - Backup Contacts. Allows you to backup all the contacts on your phone as a CSV (comma delimited file) which you can import into your Gmail contacts.
@mxmarks - Not sure there's anyway to control the brightness on those lights, maaaaaaybe with root and a custom ROM?
I know this has been asked before but what are some things I may want that's root-only besides setcpu and adfree? I'm also running Sky Raider and am wondering if anyone knows if cyanogen is "better"
That contacts app did what I wanted, but it totally messed up the contacts on my phone . I think it'll work out better if I just e-mail the contacts as CSV's to my gmail and import them that way, but it seems like this shit should be native.
Holy god Doubletwist really is made of awful. I updated my playlists to add one song and made the mistake of deciding to sync again.
It's been syncing for three hours. No, it hasn't stalled - it really is syncing. But very. very. very. slowly. And consuming 100% of one CPU core for the three straight hours.
And it's still going on, the progress bar is only ~60% across the way.
I've found doubletwist to be rather useful, but I don't do anything fancy like sync playlists. I just drop albums into the Albums folder on my SD card using the phone's USB Mass Storage connection option, unmount, load up doubletwist, and play. I'm only using my phone as a temporary replacement MP3 player until I can get a new iPod, though. The washing machine claimed my trusty 80gb 5.5 gen .
Hate to repeat myself but has anyone found any app that lets you control the amount of light from the bottom row of buttons on HTC phones?
My Evo is perfect with the exception of the fact that there's 2 beams of washing out white light coming off the top of the home button.
It's not bad enough to make me want to exchange it, but its bad enough that on white (offwhite) backgrounds you can clearly see it and its kind of distracting.
I just would love to tone down the led brightness so it goes away, or even turn them off altogether.
I haven't noticed this on the Incredible my wife has, but are you talking about the dock (Menu, Home, and Back) buttons? Couldn't you make the switch to LauncherPro and just make those buttons whatever you want? Light, dark, colored, any icon you can find actually so that would stop them from being so bright. Plus you can change the dock background.
also, interesting article on battery life. I've been impressed with my Droid X after hearing how awful most smartphone batteries are and it looks like this test confirmed my thoughts so far.

So, the first thing they did in that test was to download a task killer? Was that for the purposes of pushing the battery, or because "unused memory is good?" I wonder how much longer the batteries would have lasted without the task killer. And really, when you're only opening and closing the browser, why would you need it?
Also, they're only testing how long a battery lasts on that particular usage pattern, though I guess they admit that...
Might have been to give every phone a sort of even start, kill everything off and then let the phone open what it does automatically.
I don't know the ins and outs, and I'm sure my wife is getting better than 4 1/2 hours of usage out of her Incredible before charging it. I know I can go about 2+ days on the X with regular use before having to hit the outlet for more juice.
Is there a way to merge contacts on my phone into my Google account? I know I can sync contacts between the phone and account, but I have contacts on the phone that I want added to my Google account. When the two sync, the contacts that are only on the phone aren't added to my Google account. I don't want to manually add them, but it seems like that's the only way to add them to my Google account. Additionally, I have extra info for contacts on the phone that doesn't show up in the account's info for that contact. Is there a way to make the two identical?
On my Incredible: When you originally create contacts on the phone there is a pull down menu at the top. You need to create the contact as a gmail contact or it won't sync. Same with Google calendar. You have to create the event under your email address to sync it to the computer calendar.

I would weep over my HTC Incredible, but comparing a 1300mAh battery to the other 1500 mAh batteries is a little disingenuous.
BTW, when is the OTA update for the Incredible finally coming?? Argh!
Newest rumor is Sept 1st. While reported by Android sites, this date has no basis in Verizon's announcements and likely exists solely for the purpose of dashing hopes and dreams.
Does anyone know how video calling works? I'm talking about a Canadian vibrant but probably applies to any android phone with a front camera. Does it just use data? Or would I see minutes used on my plan, or worse yet some kind of video minutes used billed at $2 a minute? I'm talking about the built in functionality, not installing an app that I would assume fully uses data. Would it be able to video call any phone with a front camera or just other vibrants?

I would put about as much hope in that Sept 1st rumor as the previous Aug 18th one (ie none at all). Keep your expectations really low. I got impatient and rooted to test some of the custom ROMs, but in all honesty will probably downgrade back to 2.1 and run the OTA once that is released.
As for the battery, remember you can also have that 1500mAh goodness - the Evo and HD2 batteries fit inside the Incredible, and actually remove some of the flex that is normally present on the back cover. I probably still don't get 7 solid hours of moderate-heavy usage like the X, but it's a definite improvement. And you can get an OEM HD2 battery for $15!

That's pretty damn good. What do you consider regular use? I'm at about 20-30% on my X after about 4 straight hours of heavy use (video streaming, web browsing, Wordfeuding).
I saw the tail end of a reality tv show last night which had on screen a barcode for viewers to scan, in order to get more content. That was rather surprising
Anyone use an app for podcasts? Preferably free, but if the best one out there is a couple of bucks, I may be willing to pay for it if they have a free version I can test out first.

I should probably just search "google" in the Market and install everything they make. Chances are it will be an app I'll ask for in the future and it'll be better than anything else the Market has.
So Ive never really gotten into google voice (because I dont want/need another phone number), but with the new GMail intergration, I was wondering if this finally means that I can somehow have a video call from my Evo to a PC.
I used Fring to Skype a lot (my girlfriend and I are planning a move, and both of us are out of town looking for jobs every weekend), until Apple went and broke it. So since then, I have this sweet front facing camera on my Evo and zero use for it. I know the GTalk app for some reason doesn't support video chat - and both Qik and Fring don't have a desktop client.
Does this new Google Voice/GMail interface do anything for me when it comes to video calls?

Listen is really good and when the best podcasting app in the market is like 6 or 7 dollars, it is very much an easy choice. But yeah, you should totally get everything Google.

I don't think there's mobile support for it (yet). From what I understand it's limited to GMail's web interface and a webcam for video chat or mic/speakers/headset for regular phone calls. That said, I'm sure this is just the start and it'll be expanded to mobile at some point. I'm hoping for a more elaborate integration of Voice with non-Voice numbers. The voicemail alone makes it worth integrating your provider's number, but I hope they expand it to allow unlimited free texting (what I really want) and calls.
Samsung Captivate and other Galaxy S owners: How is your battery life? I've been able to hit two days between charges, and I'm a pretty big user. I'm surprised at some of the comments I've seen about the supposed horrible battery life. Anyone have thoughts on this?

I've had the galaxy s for about three weeks now and yesterday was the first time the battery ran out, and only cause I didn't charge it properly the night before. Personally its a vast improvement on my old g1. I think battery life its pretty standard in smart phones now.

FYI you dont have to use the number. I basically use it just for voice mails.

You can link it to a current, real cell phone number? I had no idea...
Well looks like Ill have to look into Google Voice some more...
EDIT: I cant get GMail to place a call. Every number I dial it rings 4 times and then says the number ended the voice chat. Is this because Im not signed up for Google Voice yet (I was never prompted to...), or is it because of the wierd internet at my work is somehow blocking it?
EDIT 2: Just got home and went to try it...

Wooh! I just rooted my Droid 2 and am so ecstatic right now and I have no idea why, I suppose it's just the knowledge of having the freedom to put whatever-whenever I want.
Might have been to give every phone a sort of even start, kill everything off and then let the phone open what it does automatically.

2 days might have been a bit much, but I know this week I fully charged it Monday early afternoon and then didn't have to plug it in again until early Wednesday morning (9 AM-ish). That was mostly sitting idle over 2 nights, and average of 1-2 phone calls a day and about a dozen text messages so it was probably a factor of not doing shit on the phone over that period. I guess now that I think about it when I start digging into the phone and downloading and fucking with apps it gets a lot closer to the 5-6 hour mark.
I've got that Battery setting set to where it shuts off all data when it sleeps (Saver Mode?) so I think that helps a lot too.
All said I'm more impressed with the battery life than I thought I would be.
Just put "official" froyo on my Incredible. Official is in quotes because technically I downloaded it - it wasn't OTA, but the versions align perfectly with a flyer distributed earlier by Verizon about Android 2.2 for the Incredible.
Anyway, I thought everything would change, but nothing has really changed at all lol Maybe I just don't care bout 720p recording and maybe the phone was already fast - haven't really noticed a huge speed increase. Oh well, at least I'm on the latest and greatest.
I got tired of waiting for Froyo on my incredible after the 18th debacle and installed Skyraider 2.2. I'm having issues receiving picture messages and updating certain apps though, I think I'm going to downgrade and do the OTA update when it's out for real reals. I hope I don't have to undue the radio update.
