E3 is over, I'm back home and exhausted, but a rewarding kind of exhausted. Saw a lot of great things, got to play with all 3 major show items, 3DS took the show by a wide margin though. And got a fair bit of swag, though the amount being handed out has been trending down in recent years.
Also went to Videogames Live. A fantastic show as always, Tommy Tallarico puts on a great performance, and I don't care what anybody says, he's a cool guy and always been very personable every time we've talked and hung out. You have to remember he's Italian and he speaks his mind, so it sometimes may come off as a little abrasive or arrogant, but he's ultimately a good guy.
So anybody that was at the show, sound off here, talk about what you saw, and we can all answer questions for the people that didn't have the privilege of coming.
P.S. Feel free to post your own photos and video from the show floor, that is something we can all enjoy and are interested in. As soon as they are uploaded I'll be posting a few hundred pics as well as some video, one of which will make you guys piss your pants.

And what was the biggest 'surprise' for you? Anything new that no one heard about? Anything slip under the radar that was actually good?

Sega had a presence with their games dotting various booths, but I don't remember off the top of my head if they actually had a specific booth. Feel better?
The three major show items were the Kinect, Move, and 3DS, that was what everybody was talking about leading up to the show.
Well as I said the biggest surprise was the fact that the 3DS was pretty much everything the rumors said it was going to be. Best of show by far, amazing graphics, decent 3D, beautiful looking system, and comfortable to hold. Not to mention all the games that are coming out for it look great, first and third party ones. The Metal Gear tech demo was jaw dropping.
Well as far as slipping under the radar, there was a typing of the dead style game in a super out of the way area, that instead of a keyboard it was actually guitar hero of the dead. I didn't get to try it, but hey the idea sounds like a solid concept am I right?
Dead Space 2 was awesome, Marvel vs Capcom 3 was great, Witcher 2 has a huge graphical upgrade, The new Pirates of the Caribbean game is coming along nicely from what I hear. I really can't wait for Space Marine, they even had a Space Marine and a Chaos Space Marine wandering about the show floor, I got pictures with them. Homefront has a lot of buzz, so I hope it's good, the Homefront booth was AMAZING.
I didn't go but I know Yakuza 4, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Sonic 4 and Shogun 2 Total War were there, so yeah, Sega had a booth.
The plot is that North Korea annexes the entirety of South-East Asia before invading the US.
No, seriously.
Same writer as Apocalypse Now and Red Dawn, apparently. Gameplay looks to be fairly standard FPS relying on both environmental destruction mechanics and "fuck yeah, America!" to differentiate itself.

Oh, is that the one with Neil Patrick Harris doing the main guy's voice? We had some videos a while back and everyone thought it looked pretty great. It's from a lower budget/lower profile developer but it's a nice concept.
No just a trailer that I'm sure you've seen online, though they had a cool booth in Gothic architecture, the characters walking around like I mentioned before.
It's a wildly outrageous concept, but from what I hear they are putting a lot of work into it. I'll show you the pics of their amazing booth when they go up.
I have no idea, I didn't try it out, I just passed by it and had a ten second talk with them. I think it was called Rock the Dead or something similar.

There's a gameplay video that was leaked last year. Before the game had even been announced, I believe.
Glad that the 3DS is getting such glowing impressions, can't wait to get my hands on one and see how this 3D works. Wish there was a way of viewing it somehow.
Stuff I can't really talk about, but one thing about a friend of mine getting fondled.
I did ONE Kinect game for 2 minutes since it was just background stuff for B roll during an interview. It was the hurdles sports game and it worked nicely. Though what really shocked me about it, was after the race I was clapping my hands and suddenly the character on the screen started doing the same thing. I went. :O
I mean, was it:
point cloud -> skeleton -> "user is clapping his hands" -> make avatar play a premade hand clap animation
or was it:
point cloud -> skeleton -> bind skeleton to avatar skeleton control points -> avatar mimics your motions

It was really mimicking me, cause when I saw that I started pulling my arms apart and waving them a bit and the avatar did all that too.
I really feel like Microsoft is burying the lead by showing off what little they showed off. Kinect sounds AMAZING. Kinect games so far sound TERRIBLE. Make different games! Your awesome hardware deserves better!

I don't know if it was the game that I was playing or the fact that while you are playing you are more focused on the game than examining the Kinect, but I didn't notice it. I mean if you are balls out running, jumping and clapping, do you have time to notice? Though yeah FPS games might be tricky, though I have no idea how they would work without buttons. Would it be a return to kindergarten pew pew games?
I've read this is dependant on the game. I think if the game uses your skeleton for stuff it has bad lag. I've heard for example all the Microsoft stuff (i.e. Kinect Sports, that Adventures game, etc) had bad lag, but other stuff like Dance Central did not.
Did you get any chance to hands-on RB3?
How many of the 3DS games were playable and did you get a chance to enjoy any of them? If so, how did character movement work in 3D?
I'm a big ol homobutt so I don't seek out the booth babes, but my photographer got about a thousand pictures, so I'm sure there are plenty in there.
I smiled and nodded at Itagaki on day one, met him before, quite a few others were wandering about. After 6 years of E3 I've met most of the major developers as well as the REAL celebs that wander about E3.
I've already mentioned a few good looking ones, MvC 3 was a lot of fun to play and looks great, with some work the Move fighting game could be a lot of fun, but as a simple tech demo so far it was entertaining, 90% of the 3DS games were just tech demos with rotatable cameras. Space Marine and the 40K MMO I can't wait for. I could go on and on, but my boy is bugging the shit out of me cause it's time for the gym so I g2g.
