No, Sim doesn't have the universal hatred the ones above do. People hate Ken and Ryu for the shear number of them online. People hate fighting against Blanka, Rog, Honda, and Gief for sure. The only ones I'm iffy on are Sagat and Guile. Sagat doesn't seem as hated as he was before, and Guile gets massive hatred but I only see it sporadically.
Sim may be my least favorite fight in the game actually.
I like mirror match only tourney. Flip a coin for who gets to pick the character or something. Could be funny. May be to peoples' advantages to pick weird guys like Dan or Hakan to play to the weaknesses of their opponents and try to emphasize fundamentals or something. I kind of like that idea the most.
A Dan tourney. People alternate between playing Dan and another character. Dan is awarded points based on the number of times he hits the opponent with a down or jump taunt. Extra points are awarded for actually winning the match. Player with the highest number of points wins.
I'm really upset right now, because I was excited for the draft. So much is going on here IRL lately, that it seems like I can't even keep my plans on here... I had a fever since Saturday evening, but I was still going to show up. Find out Saturday that someone took the X-Box with them to God knows where, even though I'm pretty sure I told them I had a thing to do Sunday. They bring the x-box in, but no chords Sunday evening, lock their door, and go to sleep. Either way, I pretty much got screwed over. I really do apologize for not making it, and I'm going to just refrain from signing up for anything ahead of time, and only doing things that I know for sure I will be able to do. I know seeing as I've only been to one Ranbat, and now this, it's probably hard to believe that so many events occur to stop me from making small commitments, but believe me, a lot of pretty ridiculous stuff has been going on in this household lately...
EDIT: I will gladly kill Dan, Sakura, and Gen still!!!
EDIT 2: As for the late response as to why I was absent, I wasn't allowed on the computer.
I was considering an all Dan tourney, but I think it sounds better on paper than it is in real life.
I like formats that force unorthodox character use, like those where your opponent gets to pick which character you play. However, once you've been made to use a character, you can't be made to use that character again.
That way we might have a first round that's all Dan, but that's it.
You could do tournaments based on the regions the characters are supposed to be from.
ie. Find out if Ken really is the greatest American fighter, or if he is beaten by Rufus/Guile/Balrog/Cody/T.Hawk/El Fuerte/C.Viper/DeeJay/Blanka (including North and South Americas).
i fell asleep way before the matches even started last night
i watched some highlights on youtube today though. gotta say, the final was a let down after how nuts the semifinals were. i mean rufus vs ryu yawnfest. i like seeing high level play of just about anyone but still.
pretty bummed that mike ross or gamerbee didnt pull through. good showings from both though.

Yeah, finals and top 8 really were pretty boring compared to the hype games that came before them. The final in particular was pretty sad. Ryu/Rufus only plays well if it's Diago/Wong. Ricky O is an amazing Rufus but he's still second fiddle to Wong. It'd be like if Valle was playing instead of Daigo... just wouldn't be the same.
I liked the Ross vrs Gamerbee match the best of the final 8. Everything else was blah. Vangief finally got counterpicked by Ricky O (which Wong should have done) then lost to Akuma which is like... standard fair. Was nice seeing Infiltration's rush down on Gief though. Henry Cen played the scrubbiest Honda I've ever seen against Adon managing to random ultra more times than J wong. It's like they were just giving games away for some reason.
Also, for all the tier madness that people have come up with, the top 3 were Ryu, Rufus, and Akuma :P Better showing from the cast overall but still funny to me anyway.

Just got back from Vegas, sitting here in the airport in Calgary.. Evo was a lot of fun. I had to play PR Rog in pools and made it on the stream, gettin smoked 4 rounds to none. I still think I did okay considering PR is far and away the best player I have ever played in my life up to that point.. I did way better than most of the poor bastards who had to go play top players up there.
I got pretty far in loser's bracket.. our pool was run like crap and I sat for 2 hours between my 2nd & 3rd match and then 1 hour between my 3rd & 4th.. while waiting, they DQed the guy I was supposed to play as we were both standing by a station waiting to play. Epic facepalm moment. We did get to play, eventually, which was awesome because he had the most beastly Sakura I have ever played.
I spent a few nights in the Salty Suite but that place was not worth $10 admission.. it was actually a huge screwjob and circle jerk run by Team Spooky for the cliquey inner circle of top American street fighter players who still maintain enormous egos, even though they got consistently destroyed by Asian players all weekend. I can't say I was surprised by how lame most of the top guys were.. Ryder (Abel) and PR Rog were both decent guys but Arturo, Sanford, Marn, Rico.. all douchebags. Sanford and Filipino Champ both deserve special mention as bitches as well, since neither of them would MM my brother for any amount of money.
Also, for all the tier madness that people have come up with, the top 3 were Ryu, Rufus, and Akuma :P Better showing from the cast overall but still funny to me anyway.
Since the game has only been out for a few months I wouldn't have expected much else. Nearly untouched characters from Vanilla are going to be well polished and practiced and a smart top tier player will stick to his guns unless something very obvious about the new characters jumps out at them.
I really hope the hype around SSFIV sticks for at least 2 more years so it evolves and we see something interesting happen with it. I will have much profound sadness if it is just a 1-year flash in the pan.
Hey guys, I'm posting from the airport, so this will be short.
I went 3-2, with 1 bye, so technically 2-2. Eliminated by an Abel mirror match.
Hakan was on the stream once, UltraDavid played him. Shit was hype. Check back in later.
Hiryu02 on
Sev: Your gameplay is the most heavily yomi based around. Usually you look for characters that allow you to force guessing situations for big dmg. Even if the guess is mathematically nowhere near in your favor lol. You're happiest when you have either a 50/50, 33/33/33 or even a 75/25 situation to go crazy with. And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.
Think I'm just about done. I'm certainly not improving, anyway.
SF is like weight lifting. You will plateau and hit walls. You have to switch up who you play and often how you play to improve.
Yeah man, realize that people like Blank have been playing for many many hours. You gotta put at least 1000-2000 into it before your brain even really starts to grok some of the subtleties, not even to mention execution.
NOW! With that said, these are skills that pay off for a lifetime if you stay in the fighting game scene. Having played 3S, CvS2, and GGXX all pretty significantly I feel comfortable picking up many different types of 2D fighters and reaching at least a low level of competency very quickly. I've really only been playing SF4 since a month before Super came out and I can at least stand toe to toe with guys like Stoked and Hiryu, though they're clearly more solid overall than me.
At that point you'll hit those walls and you have to switch it up.
- Spend some more time in training mode practicing those tougher links and different block strings.
- Try to gain more familiarity with the other characters. Either take an alt on or just play people who have more variety.
- Watch vids of different people playing your main and identify their different styles (i.e. I tend to see three different styles of Ryu which I call Daigo, Valle, and Footsie/c.MK).
And most importantly:
- Don't get discouraged. Have some fun with the game! Scrim with a friend and just both play random and have fun. Me, Lunixy, and Stoked did that the other night and it was really fun. Play Dan/Rose mirror matches. Play no throw! Play no fireball Ryu mirrors. Do silly things and enjoy the game, experiment and maybe you'll come up with something interesting that works.
If you ever need to train some evening I'm always willing to help out total beginners. Just hop on IRC any night around 10-11pm EST and say something to me and I can try to help out.
So I mentioned this in IRC but I figured I'd post it here: I am idly considering hosting a small themed tourney sort of like the WWB we just did. Right now I'm thinking a "low tier" tourney, where you can only use characters like hakan, dan, makoto, sakura, etc. That or a new character only tourney. Would there be interest in this kind of thing?
Edit: another option is a no projectile character tourney.
I enjoy using the same character over and over if i'm actually trying to learn. But sometimes i just wanna have a good time without trying to "Level up" my character.
guy has like 10K+ BP as Adon, I don't think he was just some random. (edit) beaten!
Which makes the match all the more disappointing since he doesn't seem to have any idea what to do other than Jaguar kick. Props to the gouken for wasting 2 bars for a j.mp failed show off combo at the end there. I kinda wish he lost after he did that. There's nothing more awesome than seeing someone (that isn't me) lose after pulling off a nice showy or taunt combo.
I use to do this with the smash scene I was part of a couple years ago. We did a use your opponents "main"
However that's pretty tough to enforce when not everyone has a "main"
Another suggestion is similar to the WWB except your opponent picks a character out of their remaining pool that you will use and they must defeat them using one of your characters that you pick. Think of it as given a hit list of chars you must defeat using a semi random character.

I was wrong. I can still taste the vomit his "commentary" forced out of my stomach.

Wong was retarded for not counterpicking Zangief.
I am sure there were at least one but i never saw them on the stream.

(EDIT) how do you get 4000+ PP and forget how to just walk forward.
This.
Anyone who plays in a lobby with me for any period of time will eventually be dragged onto the Random Train. And you will love it.
With the exception of Sol, Aumni, and Biz. Because they own me with their eyes closed. And i don't want to bore them
If I'm actually trying to learn a matchup or something, then yeah. Otherwise, I just get bored playing the same guy over and over again.
Anyway, this cracked me up I dunno why:

play a lot.
I saw a couple of Ibukis. But yes, there was a lack of Makotos, Hakans and THawks. Hell, I even saw a few Guys.
I definitely prefer this. I like trying to figure someone out and adapt to how they play their character.
