Nintendo has never launched a home console at $299. I doubt they'd do it for a handheld.

IT WILL COST TEH $300 is desperate fear mongering from haters like Pachter & Nintendo's competitors (who know that they're in big big trouble now).

I imagine it'll come out at around the same price point as the DS at launch.

Agreed. I honestly don't expect more than $150-170, but I'm willing to fudge up to $200 max for the thing.

The XL is $190 and is currently the best seller on Amazon. I doubt it will be less than that.

I'm pretty confident Nintendo has already done this market analysis, and have decided to develop and release the 3DS because it will be likely to succeed at market. Nintendo have GOOD businessy folks. I trust them to do this well.

I don't think it's a matter of "here's this one technology our guy just invented. Do it or don't do it?" I think it's a matter of "we've been working on this on and off for ten years. New product development has just found a supplier who can deliver this one expensive, critical component in volume and for cheaper than ever" followed by "yes, now the numbers look right, now the product can probably succeed. It's time."

Honestly, given that it's Nintendo, if they had to, I'm fairly confident they'd use less expensive/lower performing components to stay under that price line, rather than exceed it. I doubt even that is that likely though.

They don't have to, but that's how they've always worked so far

So what would make it particularly expensive? The 3D mainly requires double the resolution of the top screen, but the resolution increase shouldn't cost that much. The graphics are good but not as extravagant as the PSP was at the time. It has been five years since the release of the PSP and that had Dreamcastish quality graphics.
I think there's some more tech to it than just a double resolution screen, depending on how they accomplish their 3D effect. Could potentially be expensive.
Two cameras, one displayed on odd, one on even columns. I imagine they have a separate graphics unit rendering each camera, so it depends on how much of the cost of the unit those represent. Other than that I don't see what extra tech would be needed to achieve the effect- rendering stereo images has never been a problem (we can already see separate cameras used in games like HL2 as displays), it's always been an issue of how to display them.

I do wonder if turning the 3d off will lower power consumption. If they are using two separate hardware units then one could power the spare one down when not needed.

If things really were that discrete, turning one off would give you half an image. Only even columns or only odd columns. If you want the entire screen (both eyes) used, you'll need to fill the same number of pixels so you might as well use both units anyway.

I'm betting Nintendo will delay the 3DS to 2011 fall/winter, partially to extend the amount of time since the DSi so people aren't as pissed off by "having to buy a new console so soon", but especially if it helps with lowering the cost or increasing the supply to meet the demand. I also believe that $200 is the hard stop price point for handhelds where anything higher scares people away.

Eh. First, it feels like the DSi is fairly old, at least to me. XL I knew was a stopgap. Second, the DS market is a bit fragmented at this point -- I don't have an i. Which means I can't access DSiWare. Nintendo will want to change that.

And more than anything, keep in mind that the DS platform is 5 years old. So there is that. I see the DSi as the Gameboy Color of this generation.

The DSi is the DS's GameBoy Color, only it's flopped more than the GBC. There wasn't anything new enough about it to get companies making DSi-only/DSi-Enhanced games outside of the Camera while the addition of Color was plenty enough reason to get everyone on board the GBC train.

The DSi isn't really the DS' GameBoy Color. With the GameBoy Color, Nintendo actually supported it with GB exclusive games. Outside of the DLC, it hasn't really done that with the DSi.

The Micro was released in September 2005. The DS was released in November 21, 2004. You can' t have a stop gap that comes nearly a year after the thing it is suppose to be stop gapping for. It is closer to the NES or SNES redesign in that it was an attempt to make one lost cash in on those consoles. The NES redesign was released in 1993 while the SNES was released on August 23, 1991. The SNES redesign was released on October 20 1997 while the N65 was released on September 26, 1996. Basically, Nintendo whores out its successful consoles for as long as possible.

Well, isn't the DSi XL only $10 cheaper than the Wii?

How has the XL been selling, or are XL sales lumped into the giant unstoppable juggernaut of DS sales?

Oh, my completely unsupported guesstimate of 3DS launch pricing: $249.99 USD.

Edit: Maybe a little less, but still over $200.

What'll make that price seem like less of a rip off? It'll come with a pack-in game to show off the 3D capabilities.
