You'd have to be an idiot to bet on 3D TV being big. Worse even, you'd have to be crazy.
HDTV/Blu-Ray adoption isn't even that high yet. Sony are almost literally insane.
Marketing people looking at ticket sales for 3D movies might disagree.
The idea Sony is the driving force behind the 3D menace is ridiculous when practically every electronics manufacturer or movie studio is pushing some 3D bullshit right now.
All those companies saw Cameron and Fox rolling in piles of Avatar cash and thought "the schlubs seem to be into this 3D crap let's try to force feed them some more".
Basically if you bought a ticket to Avatar it's your fault this is happening right now.
Pretty much. EVERY manufacturer at the Consumer Electronics Show this year was flogging 3D hard. And ticket sales at 3D movies have been big so far.
Heh. So in a sense the 3DS doesn't just threaten Sony, it threatens the entire television industry.
NSTF: Yeah, we saw that. Ebert's original opinion was steeped in ignorance something fierce, but I've got to admire a guy who will publicly admit his mistakes.
Unless Sony forces or provides very strong incentive to incorporate 3d into a game I don't see a lot of devs doing it.
It's a massive resource hog and would necessitate making games that look about on par with 360/PS3 launch titles (or worse), or making a game with two different sets of art assets (not going to happen). Some of the hands on reports from people playing 3d games at E3 confirm this.
Our current consoles can't even run most games in true HD resolutions. There's no way they can incorporate a tech that would double the number of frames they need to render without a significant drop in quality of visuals.
That is what next gen is for. Of course, listening to some analysts, there won't be a next gen until 2015.
They are right. It will take a few years to rebound from the video game crash of 2012.
I dunno. If Sony is going to push 3D, I think they might as well use the PS3 to help. It's a pretty easy thing to add to games since it can be put in as an option at the engine level. No need for new assets, etc.
Actually with the extra processing required, they could very much need different assets, or more optimized ones. I thought that's what everyone at E3 disliked about it, it was the same games only in a noticeably lower quality (FPS, effects, etc.).
Yeah, I'm basically assuming that they'll just let the games run a lower resolutions so their would be a tradeoff between 3D and graphics.

Not to mention that Stringer's been trying to get the various Sony divisions to play better with each other, and in an interview with Wired he said he's betting big on 3D. There's a company-wide push for this, no doubt.
The more I think about it, the more I think it's possible that Sony's grand plan for 3D in all their devices to get undone by Nintendo's wee handheld.
This here is why Sony seem to be very terrified of the 3DS. They are obviously banking hard on 3D being the next big thing for the entertainment field. Unfortunately it requires glasses. (Like others have said, I am so not wearing glasses OVER my glasses, that's just stupid and irritating.)
Then comes along Nintendo with a little handheld that goes and does everything they are banking on, only without the major hangup the tech has.
So far all Sony can say is "Yes, Nintendo and Sony have similar visions. We want to work together but Nintendo has to stop saying 'yo mama' jokes to us if they want us to play with them. "
Problem is that Nintendo and Sony have completely different visions, and this has Sony scared, especially when Nintendo makes a jab at them about the one thing many probably see as a problem with 3D, the glasses.
NSTF: Yeah, we saw that. Ebert's original opinion was steeped in ignorance something fierce, but I've got to admire a guy who will publicly admit his mistakes.
He's still pretty ignorant about it. He's just resigned himself to 'not getting it' and is probably tired of the 'ur sew st00p1d!' e-mails.
Just sent this press release out through the usual channels. We'll see if any of the big sites pick it up.
Breath of Death VII achieves over 66.6% LTD conversion rate, one of the highest in the industry
Breath of Death VII: The Beginning, the first RPG from indie game developer, Zeboyd Games, has achieved a LTD conversion rate of over 66.6% with sales of over 20,000 copies in the first 70 days since release. Conversion rate is defined as the number of sales divided by the number of demo downloads. Breath of Death VII has also achieved the second highest user rating of any XBox Live Indie Game on the US marketplace with an average rating of 4.75 out of 5.
"We are thrilled with these results," says Breath of Death VII creator, Robert Boyd. "Most casual game developers consider their game a success if they manage to achieve a double digit conversion rate. To have achieved a rate of over 2/3rds is just phenemonal."
"I attribute our high conversion rate to the high quality of the game, the positive press we've received on sites like Yahoo and Kotaku, and the tremendous value the game provides. In a world where even indie RPGs frequently have price tags of $20 and above, being able to buy a great RPG like Breath of Death VII for $1 is unheard of."
Zeboyd Games' next RPG, a dark comedy called Cthulhu Saves the World starring the insanity-inducing monstrosity from the horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft will have a slightly higher price tag of $3 due to price/size limitations imposed on XBox Live Indie Games ($1 games are limited to 50MBs, whereas $3 & $5 games can take up to 150MBs). However, the developers at Zeboyd Games are hard at work to make Cthulhu Saves the World just as much of a value as Breath of Death VII.
"Cthulhu Saves the World is longer, the visuals look better, the gameplay is deeper and more balanced, there's more music and the music we are using is of higher quality, and the story is more interesting than the already great Breath of Death VII. Not only that, but there will be greater incentives to replay the game with multiple difficulty levels and three unlockable bonus modes, one of which (Cthulhu's Angels) will include new dialogue and a bonus playable character."
I saw Avatar in a good cinema with the 3D glasses and contact lenses beneath.
Even if I had the Sultan of Brunei as my gardener, and Bill Gates as my butler, I would not bother to jump into Sony's Glorious Future. It simply wasn't that cool yet.
Also, Pachter is pretty much an embarrassment to his line of work. I hope his personal income goes down once his current secret benefactors have realized the jig is up and his services are no longer needed.
Edit: That's great news, RainbowDespair. I'm glad the serious effort you have been a part off is paying off.

He won't. Analysts never get held accountable for the advice they give, just so long as they sound decisive enough to please investors with itchy buy/sell triggers. Hell, none of the real estate analysts got dinged for missing the violently obvious problems with the market (give high-risk mortgages to people who can't afford them, then have the biggest financial names in the industry spend billions buying absurdly complex stakes in them? What could possibly go wrong?).

Cutting resolution isn't really an option. If your game is rendered at 720p native (which may not be the case, as some games can't push that on the Xbox), you would have to go to a resolution near 480p to include 3D with no loss of framerate. 480p is about 45% the resolution of 720p, so you'd probably be somewhere like 500p.
I don't think that would be an acceptable solution.
Of course, the other option (besides art asset quality, which is a non-option option) is framerate.
That might be a promising avenue. If you can run your game at 600p60 with one camera, you should in theory be able to render it at 600p30 with two cameras (my guess is that this is what Crytek is doing for Crysis 2).
No no, not doomed. I'm more excited to see that Twisted Pixel is picking up some more quality designers.
They are an awesome company that have made two absolutely fantastic games. Comic Jumper can't come soon enough.
I also want to know what the new project is that coaxed him away from Harmonix.
Fixed that for you. I love those guys.
anyhow...
So as far as Heavy Rain goes, they're either adding a patch or making a new version that replaces the old controls with Move? That seems like a lot of effort for very little, really. I mean, Heavy Rain was an ok experience and it sold well, but does Sony really think they'll sell that many more copies with Move, or that the game itself will sell Move?
I suppose if Nintendo can repackage Gamecube games with Wii controls, Sony can do the same with standard PS3 games with Move.

Nintendo can only do it because it's fucking Nintendo. People eat that shit up and beg for more.
SONY trying to replicate it using a game that isn't exactly setting the world on fire is almost like putting the spoiled milk back into the fridge and thinking that maybe tomorrow it'll be better. How well did Lair do with SIXAXIS-only controls?

This sums up the 3D evolution pretty well. And watching the PSP slowly evolve into a phone (through Skype usage) over the years has me wondering if Nintendo is ever going to roll out a game/phone to compete with iPhone.

A movie is about $15 or $20 though. A far cry from a few grand.
They're just seeing a potential market, they don't need everyone that buys a movie ticket to buy a stupidly expensive TV, not initially anyway.
Going to cinema and wearing silly glasses for a couple of hours is a far cry from paying $4000+ to own a 3DTV + your own silly glasses that you would theoretically be wearing ALL THE TIME while using it but in reality hardly ever because there is very little in the way of 3D TV avilable and won't be for some time.
The amount of compelling reasons to OWN a 3D TV is sitting at zero. If you're stupid wealthy then you may not think anything of dropping a fat wad of cash to play a few PS3 games in 3D but to people living in the real world it's a laughable proposition.
Sony are getting dumber and dumber, they are constantly playing this 'most cutting edge tech and damn the cost!' card non-stop despite the fact that pretty much everything in the market indicates the opposite is the way to success. Are they even slightly aware that the economy is a shambles right now? The mass market can't afford this shit.

So MK Wii beat out 3 other racing games that launched this month?
It's easy for me to say since I'm not a fan at all but it has long seemed to me that the racing genre is oversaturated.
Also WSR isn't really showing crazy, Nintendo Evergreen legs.
It came out at the end of July last year...staying in the top twenty since then isn't too bad. It's still done its evergreen job...but yea, it's no Mario Kart/NSMB/WiiPlay/WiiFit. But it's more than made a stack of cash for Nintendo. The only Wii branded series game that failed to live up to expectations was WiiMusic...but yea, sucky game = sucky sales and such.

People like cheap glasses that they can throw in a recycling bin.
Problem is that Nintendo and Sony have completely different visions, and this has Sony scared, especially when Nintendo makes a jab at them about the one thing many probably see as a problem with 3D, the glasses.

Looks like the Heavy Rain Chronicles was shelved for the dev to add in Move support. Future dlc for Heavy Rain may now never happen.
Heh, those darn casualz! :P
In other news, a senior designer for Harmonix jumped ship to Twisted Pixel on a new project.

Picture Me Rollin'
No no, not doomed. I'm more excited to see that Twisted Pixel is picking up some quality designers.

The project of Not Getting 'Sploded Into a Pile of Processed Meat. That 'Splosion Man is a tough negotiator.
Ok Cloud, no writing this sort of stuff while I'm with a client. I about chortled in front of them. That would have been embarrassing.

MPT did well, but that's more because it is three amazing games with new controls for 50.
This sums up the 3D evolution pretty well. And watching the PSP slowly evolve into a phone (through Skype usage) over the years has me wondering if Nintendo is ever going to roll out a game/phone to compete with iPhone.

OMG! Mario Kart Wii, with however long it's been out and sold over 20 million copies, outsold Blur, with its subtle jab against Mario Kart in its advertising, in its first month?!
RACING REALLY IS ABOUT MAKING FRIENDS!!!
(But to be fair, how many days was Blur out in this NPD?)

So of all May's new games that missed the top 10... only Modnation Racers made it into the top 20. Barely.
Bloodbath confirmed.
Edit: Blur came out the 25th, so yah, it didn't have much time to make a splash.
Then again, if it were to be popular at all it would have at least shown up in the top 30.
I didn't catch that, but that's both sad and funny at the same time. I've heard Blur is a good game, but ouch...
So MK Wii beat out 3 other racing games that launched this month?
It's easy for me to say since I'm not a fan at all but it has long seemed to me that the racing genre is oversaturated.
Also WSR isn't really showing crazy, Nintendo Evergreen legs.

Lost Planet 2 made it as well.
Modnation Racers PSP is at the top of the PSN bestselling chart. I wonder how much that translates into actual sales.

No doubt WSR has done well but it sort of shows that the demand for "Wii Sports but better" isn't really as high as MS and Sony are hoping.

Don't forget that it's bundled with all Wiis from here on out so you'll see sales drop off a bit.

Yeah, they started bundling them May 9th, so that's a severe reduction.
