Visiting the Ottawa area

I find it odd that I am posting this, but my wife and I are going to visit the Ottawa area in a couple weeks. Being a native to the area I feel odd posting because I haven't been there in 6 years, and aparently things have changed a bit.

We're going to visit my family in Gatineau, but we also want to hit the museums, our current plan is to get one of the Museum Passport things ( http://www.museumspassport.ca/museum_passport/index.asp?lang=1 ) and hit them during the week. The road bump I've run into however is parking. Apparently it's not as free as it used to be.

We're not afraid to walk distances to get to our destination if it means saving a few bucks. We're going to be out Monday through Friday and paying upwards of 20 bucks to park each day, depending on the lot of course, seems a bit ludicrous to me.

So, my question to the natives of the area is, where can I find free, or REALLY cheap parking close to the museums.

Hmm it actually depends what museum you're looking at. I haven't been to most of them recently, but far as I can remember:

Museum of Nature, which has been freshly reopened and totally worth checking out and you may be able to find parking south of the queensway in the residential area but that will be a hike to get back to the museum.

For the Museum of Civilization, I don't know Gatineau very well so I couldn't tell you about it, but on the other hand the parking fees go straight back to the museum as revenue so think of it as supporting a good cause.

Museum of Science and Tech is free last time I was there but it was after hours.

Finally the Aviation Museum is in the middle of nowhere so parking is kind of a must there.

As an alternative, bussing may not be a bad option as the major museums are all accessible if you don't feel like paying. But yeah all in all the parking situation totally blows through out the city so uh welcome back.

OC Transpo day passes cost $7.50 each, which is below $20 a day for two people, but that may not be your first choice.

Like Bryse Eayo said, parking costs are up a fair bit in general in Ottawa. Perhaps a combination of driving and the bus: drive to museums that offer free parking , and then use day passes on other days for the others.
