USB HDD Enclosure Issue

Ok, I went out and bought a HDD enclosure for my extra 200gig drive I had laying around...Dynex brand if it matters (I get a sweet discount)

Anyway, I plugged everything in correctly but I am still not getting it detected it seems.

I know the USB ports work, I've plugged devices into them before with no issue.

There are no drivers for it. It is supposed to be autodetected by Windows XP.

Nothing is happening at all. I mean, it is possible that something in the device itself is not functioning, but I wanted to see if anyone has ever had any experiences with this sort of thing before.

Have you checked Disk Management to see if it's listed (Start --> Run --> diskmgmt.msc)

It may be in that list, but if it's not formatted/initialized, it won't show up in "My Computer".

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

Is the drive plugged into the wall for power and switched on?

(Sorry dumb question but you know...)

Yeah. I had an epiphany right after I left before. What jumper setting should the drive be on? Without looking, I'm guessing it is currently set on cable select.

That depends on the drive. Some should be set to master, others have a position for single. Check the instructions/jumper guide.

I bought a sweet Vantec brand usb 2, hd enclosure seveal months ago. In their manual it said to set the jumpers to slave setting. So far I haven't had a single problem with it. I'm guessing yours should be set to slave as well, being that your existing hd will be the master.

Check what your first harddrive is set to. You can leave them both set as Cable Select if you want then organize the boot order in the BIOS. As it was said above, you also need to format the hard drive to have it show in Windows. Boot up with a windows XP install cd in and go up to the installation screen and format the new drive then reboot without the cd.

You do not have to reformat the hd if it was previously formatted for win xp. I pulled out my secondary 300 gig hd from my failing desktop, plugged it into the enclosure and that's it. It still had all its data when I hooked it up to my laptop via USB.
