Uru Live: Storyline

EleriEleri Registered User regular
edited October 2007 in Games and Technology
As requested here's a thread to keep people update on what's happening in the world of Uru. This is summarized from various sources, primarily Uru Obsessions "Cavern Today" forum. Chat logs and other tidbits can be found there.
Story is presented 'In Cavern' (in character), with Out Of Cavern comments in italics.

This will get updated every Saturday with the weeks events.

~~~~~~
Dec 19th 2006:
the D'ni Restoration Council held a Town Hall meeting to discuss an unknown topic. Before the meeting could start, there was a horrible screeching noise from the hidden creatures known as the Bahro, and everyone, everywhere, was suddenly linked to their Relto age.
this was the transition point from the Cyan run Until Uru shard of D'mala to Uru Live. After this date, all events take place in Myst Online: Uru Live though Gametap (currently in final beta)
Dec 20-21:
The DRC tries to regroup after 'The Scream'; previously open areas of Ae'gura, the main area of the D'ni city, are closed off because of potential seismic damage.
Whereabouts of explorers are confirmed, to see if there's anyone missing.
Restoration Engeneers for the DRC start giving regular newcomer orientations daily in the "Beginner's Bevin" neighborhood.
Dec 22-26:
Dr. Kodama of the DRC and explorers begin to puzzle out why some linking books lead you to public 'instances' and some do not. Yeesha's involvement is suspected.
DRC member Michael Engberg announces that he's working on the doors leading from the Kadish Gallery, into the city. He has found that rather than natural degredation, the power to those doors seems to have been deliberately severed.
Several members of the DRC, and Michael's daughter "Wheely", visit with explorers in the cavern.
Imagers and telescopes are activated in all neighborhoods.
Dec 27
The Gallery doors are open.
DRC member Dr. Marie Sutherland chats with Explorers; the subject of the possibillity that the "called" explorers may have D'ni blood is brought up. Also mentioed is the mysterious Cate...supposedly someone with authority over the DRC.
People begin to wonder why the community-elected DRC Liaisons aren't meeting with the DRC.
Dec 28-Dec 31
In all neighborhoods, the community room and the fountain are back up and running, and the New Years decorations go up, including fireworks. Ahyoheek tables are back, but turned off.
Several neighborhoods hold large NYE parties.
Jan 1-2 2007
New tshirts are left for explorers in Ae'gura, featuring the 'first month' contest winner's design.
DRC employee Nick White appears in the city, and talks a bit more about Cate. Explorers are given the impression of 'upper management'. Cate Alexander is scheduled to announce herself on the 3rd.
Jan 3
Explorers gather in neighborhoods and the city waiting for Cate. The DRC Liaisons meet her briefly in a private neighborhood before she makes a formal appearance in the Beginner's Bevin. She is very business like, and reveals herself to be a primary investor in the restoration. She opens the previously closed Tokotah Courtyard, and announces the coming opening of the Canyon, the Great Zero, and a new Age. She leaves without answering questions. Explorers have very mixed reactions.
Jan 4-9
The Canyon area is opened.The "Island" relto page appears in several neighborhoods.
The DRC Liaisons release the transcript of their meeting with Cate Alexander, and immediately come under fire for not releasing it sooner, and asking 'permission' of the DRC to release it.
The Private, or "Egg" Room in the neighborhoods is opened.
DRC member Victor Laxman is seen in the city. Cate Alexander links in, and Laxman leaves quickly. Cate is looking for him, and is clearly angry. She wants deadlines met, and he's not meeting them.
Jan 10th
The Ferry dock area is opened.
Cate Alexander asks for a last-minute meeting with the DRC Liaisons. Only DRCL Vortmax is able to attend. He does not release a transcript of the meeting, at Cate's request. He does let explorers know that Eder Delin is delayed because of weather issues, and that Cate is not a DRC member.
A firestorm of controversy starts amoung a small population of explorers over DRC Liaison responsibility and loyalty, as well as the need for Liaisons, given the DRCs lack of mention of them in any capacity.
Jan 11th
The Concert Hall Foyer is opened.
DRC employee Nick White visits the area, and mentions that Laxman is still 'on the run' from Cate over the Great Zero not being ready to open.
Controversy over the Liaisons continues to rage on the DRC official forums, and the level of civility starts to drop considerably.
A person named Dr August speaks with explorers, and begins organizing a group called United Explorers for Freedom.
One Harlan Mason arrived in the city, and was quoting the Words of the Watcher. He was immediately engaged in debate by another, more agnostic, explorer.
ooc: Dr. August & Harlan Mason are a fan-run story elements
Jan 12-16
The Hall of Kings is opened.
DRC Liaisons CAGrayWolf and Tweek resign their positions under the weight of explorer aggression.
A strange spark appears in Gahreesen, leading to Relto changes.
The Great Zero opens. Linking books to the Great Zero appear in the neighborhoods. Explorers are supprised to find that they show Yeesha's symbol, not the DRC stamp.
Explorers beging to find 'markers' with their KIs.
Jan 17
The remaining DRC Liaisons; Vortmax, Gadren and Eleri; tender their resignations directly to Cate Alexander, who accepts.
Dr. Kodama announces to explorers that the DRC Liaisons are officially dissolved.
Jan 18
The Ahyoheek tables in the neighborhoods are turned on.
Several former DRC Liaisons, along with other explorers, form an independant 'PR firm'. Their first announcement from the DRC is that Eder Delin will open tomorrow. The DRC also announces this through KImail.
Jan 19
Eder Delin books become available in all neighborhoods, after a few hiccups. Explorers find that a new syle of 'journey cloth' and 'journey door' awaits them, and quickly set to work discovering their secrets.
Cate Alexander asks explorers about improvements to the DRC website.
    Ok, wait, I thought Uru closed its doors. Gametap has it now, I know, but it is just the old stories and stuff that were created before the old Uru closed down, right?
    Is it coming to Xbox live, now?
    Is there new content for it?
    Uru did close it's doors down. Cyan released the Uru products (Prime, To D'Ni, Path of the Shell) and set up player run shards under the "until Uru" banner. Gametap picked up Uru and for awhile it was just Uru Prime, then they allowed Cyan to restart Uru Live with new stuff (there's now a new age with new journey cloths) and restart the live/online story.
    And as far as I know, there's no plans to release it to Xbox Live.
    All of the DRC members and ResEngs are 'digital actors'- real live people interacting with who they meet, not pre-canned NPC actions.
    Things have been relatively packed since it went to final beta on GT. You won't find anyone in any of the Ages on your bookshelf, unless you invite them, but the City and the neighborhoods have stuff happening. And Eder Delin is attached to 'hoods, rather than your Relto.
    Machismo wrote:
    Heck yah. Technically Eder Delin is the first real new area, that wasn't available previously, but there's been some changes to old areas (Like the thingie in Gahreesen, and a new relto page that ads something major.)
    Supposedly, Eder Tsogahl is the next age that the DRC will open, and there's been talk about new areas of the city, new Ages like Pento (home of the historical Pento War), and whispers of mysterious 'pods'.
    I didn't much care for the Bioshock review. It didn't deliver on the funnies like the previous reviews, but it wasn't bad.
    The ending was very weak, though. Usually his videos have good endings.
    Did you just review a review?
    I found reVerse's review to be too short and a little light on content and quality. Still, his punctuation and sentence structure was better than most.
    The physical content now is what was available in Uru:Ages Beyond Myst, and the To D'ni expansion. There's been one age added, Eder Delin, that was unavailable in any of the original content. There have also been things added that reflect the new story line, which picks up in realtime the restoration that shut down in 2004
    Content from Path of the Shell is expected in the future, but how the story from PotS will integrate is unknown.
    Myst Online:Uru Live is included as part of a $10 monthly GameTap subscription. They're working on Uru options for people outside GTs service area.
    Ok, so I completely flaked on posting weekly. I blame the Martian Death Plague that visited our house.
    Jan 25-30
    Restoration Engineer Nick White made the rounds, and talked a bit about the possibility of DRC Contractor Douglas Sharper returning. Sharper played an interesting role in the earlier restoration efforts, will he return to his antagonistic stand?
    More areas of Ae'gura opened up, including the path to the Library, and the rope bridge over the chasm was restored.
    One of the "Bahro Stones" appeared in the city, leading to Teledahn, where something awaited explorers. Another goody was found in Eder Delin. These lead to speculation that Yeesha and/or the Bahro are active, even though they haven't been seen yet. However, the Bahro are very audible in areas of the cavern.
    Feb 1
    A new 'sparklie' is found in one age, while the first sparklie dissapears. Is it the same one, and it moves? Why is only one available at a time?
    Feb 2-5
    The Library courtyard opens, but resotration work is still being done on the library itself. The DRC brings firemarbles to the neighborhoods. The DRC Website reopens with a now, some say sterile, design. The DRC forums are absent without warning, causing serious explorer outrage.
    Cate Alexander visits the city, and is lambasted for removing the forums. She claims they will not return. Explorer discontent grows.
    Feb 6-7
    DRC member Michael Engberg inspects the Library, and expresses concerns about the speed with which things are being opened, and the potential dangers.
    The Library is opened the next day.
    Feb 8
    A group of explorers, headed by Tweek, try to organize in a peacefull 'sit in' in Ae'gura. Members of an anti-DRC group and others are disruptive, preventing the explorers from conversing in any reasonable way with Cate Alexander, who leaves in disgust.
    Feb 9
    Michael Engberg informs people in the Guild of Greeters neighborhood that after serious negotiations with Cate, the DRC forums have reopened, but are not accessable from the front door of the site.
    Feb 11
    Someone impersonating Douglas Sharper arrives, and seems to throw his hat in with the Anti-DRC movement, which is actively trying to recruit Sharper's old explorer contacts, The Great Tree. The deceit is quickly uncovered, but not before the fake Sharper has confused a large group of people. The Great Tree issued a statement about the incident. (ooc: the fake, who has substituted a letter to get past the naming restrictions, was firmly smacked down by in game GMs, and is probably feeling the sting of the EULA door hitting their butt on the way out.)
    There are both standard 'lookie, a puzzle' type things, as well as some cooperative puzzles, some hang out and play together games, and the new Age of Jalak, which is a sandboxy sort of thing, where people are developing their own games (and some of us just enjoy raining geometric doom on people).
    Then, there's the story (both official, and some fan-created elements) that offers a good deal of discussion and speculation.
    Am I right to understand that the story seems to be that the people excavating these mysterious ruins slowly begin to behave and organize in a manner similar to the society they are studying? If so, that's an awesome conceptual plot device/gameplay and roleplay element.
