Speaking of Sonya I'm actually interested to see how she'll look/ play. And yes, even though they apparently made her into pornstar Shyla Stylez, she does look pretty cool in MKvsDC.

Her best look, IMO. True it was trashy, but still awesome. Kind of describes the whole series, actually.

Wow watching this video brings so many questions about games in there that are off topic. So many I'm suddenly interested in, especially the indie ones.

Surprised MK won so many awards. Wonder if its like a lot of us in here, nostalgia plus it looking great, or if it is truly kick ass! Bought anyways. Can't wait.

    Not really

MK's way cooler than Street Fighter anyways, even if SF is technically the superior fighter

Well, MK is way more story-based, especially in later iterations

Also there's definitely something personal about fatalities

If SF had fatalities that would be sweet as hell (not gruesome ones or anything, just nice little finishing moves to add insult to injury)

I think that I can sum it up thusly.

When I was 10, Mortal Kombat was the awesomest thing that ever awesomed. Blood, gore, boobs, monsters, lasers, ninjas, robots, ROBOT NINJAS, etc.

This new game feels like a suped-up version of MK 2 and 3.

    Or, put another way:

I always thought that Scorpion redesign was the most badass, mainly because the artist threw out all the ninja costumery that had been done since MK2 and almost made it exactly like the original Scorpion, but then this whole 'he killed a demon and smeared the yellow blood on it to get demon powers' thing.

I wonder what the odds could be of getting something like it as an alt costume?

    ...

I wonder how involved alt costumes will actually be in this game, considering all the battle damage now?

I generally think the redesigns are a bit too busy (not a fan of giving people pouches and weapons they'll never use), but I do like the overall approach. The Scorpion design in particular is pretty good since it gets rid of the silly brightly colored ninja costume while still evoking the characteristic look.

I imagine you could do something similar with Sub-Zero as well simply by replacing the blue on his costume with a sheen of frost or ice.

Wow, those are really damn cool. I'm not a huge fan of the Raiden redesign, but it's an interesting direction that he's being taken. I actually think Sonya from the waist up is my favorite. If she actually had pants (and didn't have bizarre weaponry that really doesn't belong on her character?) I would love to see that design as her new look.

I like the Raiden design myself. It looks a lot more like what I imagine when somebody says "Thunder God" then the regular MK Raiden does. Not sure about his dagger, but everything else is pretty cool.

And yeah, that Sonya could be awesome if she would put on some damn pants. Don't know what it is about [strike]fighting[/strike] video games that convinces art designers that chicks should fight to the death in lingerie.

I guess what I don't like about Raiden is his head, otherwise, yeah I agree with you. Seeing everything from the neck down is quite badass, but that black head-condom needs to go.

I find it bizarre that it's managed to stay through pretty much every single iteration of Raiden despite it keeping the character designers from doing something cool with his hair and neck accessories.

And this is why Mortal Kombat is a western franchise and Raiden doesn't look like an early DBZ reject. I agree that Raiden is in severe need of some kind of re-design, though.

The story with that art was that Midway considered making a darker MK instead of MKvsDCU.

Sonya- was supposed to be the daughter of a Texas Ranger (you can see the badge on her hip), and the reason for the thong was a much greater emphasis on her legs, almost like Elena from SF3.

    Kano- Half American/ Japanese merc

Scorpion- Someone already mention the yellow demon blod for powwwwwer.

Raiden- Raiden wasn't going to walk he was gonna FLOAT.

Originally, Scorpion wore a yellow ninja outfit in the same design of that worn by the Lin Kuei in order to mock said rival clan whom he considered to be cowards. His redesign here could perhaps be thought of as a Lin Kuei uniform he painted yellow (with a little help from Jackson Pollock). That would be pretty neat.

I severely doubt these redesigns will show up in MK9 in any form, as they were created as a pitch for a reboot that never got the green light, and the artist had since left the company.

    Not quite. Nobody time travels.

Following the events of Mortal Kombat Armageddon... and I'm really not sure what the canon ending is to that game but I suppose we will find out... somehow Shao Khan has defeated Raiden and is on the verge of conquering Earth Realm. Just as Shao Khan is about to deliver the finishing blow and kill the thunder god once and for all, Raiden sends a mental message back in time to his younger self in the hopes of altering the course of history and preventing the destruction of Earth Realm.

Past-Raiden receives the message just as the tournament from MK1 is about to begin.

Mortal Kombat takes place during the events of MK1, MK2, and MK3. Due to Raiden's knowledge of the future, not everything will be the same as it was the first time around.

it's not a straight retread. The game begins at the end of all the current mortal kombats, as Shao Kahn defeats raiden. Raiden realizes he fucked up from the very beginning, and right before he dies, he uses his power to send a message back to himself during the 10th mortal kombat tournament (aka MK1).

Because he sends a message back to himself, he causes the timeline to change in slight ways and things wind up happening differently. The examples they used is that some characters who might have become robots might not this time, or vice versa.

But it does take place during MK1-3. hence the old shang tsung.
