So - my son is getting into the Pokemon Card game. We bought two of the starter decks and he's bought a few booster packs. It's fun - but while I was teaching my wife how to play tonight even she commented that it seems like we could use a better variety of cards to play with.
What's the best way to get a good variety of cards cheap? I'd let him buy more booster packs but that doesn't really build the mana pool up to allow him to build different colored decks. Any suggestions? More starter decks? Amazon common card lots?
I know the comic book shop near me has TONS of pokemon cards, all pretty cheap. I think the rares are going for something like $1, the regular cards going for about twenty five cents.
Usually game shops will have loads of extra Energy cards to sell in bulk... expect to pay about a dime each for them. As far as a big batch of cards, well, you can check eBay for people who are getting out of the game. Most hobby shops will also have preconstructed decks to give you a few more options to play with.
Thanks - I think I'm hitting one of those limits to living in Maine - all the comic shops that I know of just sell the cards in their retail packs. I found a shop that sounds like they might be good but they're closed this week until Monday so maybe I'll give them a call then.
I haven't played for years, but the best way to get bulk energy / commons / uncommons would be stores that sell individual cards (usually they have boxes of the not-rare stuff behind the counter, for the cheap) and/or eBay (look up 'pokemon card lot'). On that note, something to keep in mind is that only the most current sets (I think, 5 or so back? The main TCG website will tell you) are considered 'playable' in tournaments and such. Depending on the circle of friends he'd be playing in, this may or may not be an issue.
Also as time goes on, if he gets really into it he'll start getting boosters for gifts from friends and family, and will quickly gather more commons and uncommons than he would ever need. Plus trades and all that. I don't know if the TCG still sanctions leagues, or if they did if you have a local game store that participates, but when I was playing and about 13, the leagues were great for also teaching the littler kids, and giving them a semi-supervised area in which to learn. Eg, most older players aren't going to be douches and try to make a worthless trade, or let some other deuch do it.

Also, if it's cool with his circle of friends to play with older cards, I've seen good cards around yard sales. Moms selling their college-age kid's stuff.
I'll admit it; I still have all my cards, and I will buy ones if I can find them cheap. Saving 'em for my kids one day

He's only 5 so he doesn't care if they're used or tourney legal. I'll have to check ebay today and maybe yardsale this weekend. I'm thinking the shop I found will have stuff but maybe I'll search more - there can't be just one card shop in Maine...

Where in Maine are you? If you are in the southern area Crossroad Games in Standish is where you will want to go. If you are up in the Bangor area it looks like 3 Geek Gaming may be your best bet.
You can also go to http://ww2.wizards.com/StoreAndEventLocator/Default.aspx and just search for an FNM in your area. Even though that link is for Magic, most stores that hold tournaments would also likely have Pokemon cards.
This brings back good memories of other card games. In terms of cheapness, I would think your best bet is like so:
1) eBay - Look for people getting out of the game (depending on their need, they may be priced very low), or for group lots that can be had for very cheap. For example, some group lots can be had for as low as a cent per card, or a little more than that (and that sometimes includes rares). A physical store can't beat that usually.
2) Specialty online stores - only use this option to get that ONE or TWO special rare cards that he likes to use. They are usually cheaper than buying the specific rare at a physical store, and they have a larger collection.
3) Gaming stores - buy in bulk from their common / uncommon stacks, and then normal physical product.
Although, to me, there was nothing quite like buying an entire box of booster packs and ravenously tearing through them to see what I got...

AWESOME - thank you soooo much. I was waiting for Weekend Anime in Westbrook to be open but this is much better. Crossroad is apparently 9 miles from my house (we live in Windham). That's just perfect. I may even check it out after work today.
I'm in Bangor-Brewer area. 3 Geek Gaming/Next Level Gaming is only Magic. Anyone know anything close to us that sells single cards? Bull Moose has some of the Packs but the only place I can get the singles I need to complete sets in is online. Pain in the butt, but potentially manageable. Westbrook has Weekend Anime, but we don't have any leagues or anything down here! Anyone know of any?
