Waiting on the UPS truck... Suggestions?

I'm already late for class because I'm waiting for the UPS guy to show up. He's still not here. What should I do? Here's the problem with just leaving: my apartment complex doesn't hold packages. So if he comes, and I'm not here, he'll leave it on the door step.

The problem with this is that there are a bunch of thieving kids around and they will almost surely take the package. I could leave it with my neighbors... except they are the type to take it without telling me.

Or I can leave the door unlocked, leave him a note to open the door and then put it at the bottom of the stairs, then close it. Does that sound safe? Someone will be home in about 4 hours.... Any suggestions on what to do???

It's my understanding that if they can't deliver a package you can pick it up at the nearest UPS location. Don't know if you're able to do that later.

Or, skip class or just arrive later. People have lives, your professor won't hate you.

I'm not sure they're allowed to enter the house even if you levae a note. Just leave a note requesting to pick it up at the UPS station. In the future, if there's a "signature required" option when you order I'd check that.

My only thing about doing this is that it's a summer accelerated course. 1 class = 3 hours = almost a week worth of material.

I knew I should have selected USPS for delivery. They have already made their rounds..

Ah hah! Yeah I'll leave a note saying I'll pick it up at the UPS store if no one's home. Good plan, since it's only 5 minutes away. Thanks!

you can call with the shipment number, and ask to pick it up as well. However, it's very possible this will confuse them and your package will disappear into an alternate dimension as mine sometimes do.

It's a distinct possibility they will "not see" (ignore) your note. it all depends on who your delivery guy is.

I can't afford to miss any more class. So this is my only option other than just not being here.

They won't drop it at your local The UPS Store. They will take it back to the small pack processing center. That is where you will need to pick it up. Not sure if you meant you the small pack center is near by or if your local The UPS Store is near by.

I apologize to urahonky. I thought it was a typical class you could miss. Though, if you're already late, fuck it.

They should leave a note saying they were there and when they'll try again. You can fill out a form on the note telling them what you want them to do in the event you're not there next time.

They shouldn't leave it without a signature and would be liable if its stolen so long as you haven't previously given them permission to just leave it there.

This. They'll leave you a note with a tracking number. Should be a 800 number on there too, which you can call, and with the tracking number you can have them move the delivery to another spot, or you can have them hold it at the depot (they'll be able to tell you where that is). They won't let you alter the delivery until they've made at least one attempt.

Since I'm single, and work, packages sent signature required kinda suck.

However, where I live, usually when I get home I get the ticket and I call them, and they let me pick it up at the depot that evening. It can be a long wait sometimes (the truck doesn't often come back when they expect them to, and sometimes I think they really don't pay attention to the fact you're physically there waiting for them to pull you package out), but it can be possible to get you package that first day.

You could be waiting a long time. Depending on your neighborhood/city there my be no set time for the ups driver to stop by. UPS deliveries for me have been on my door at 9am, and they have come as late as 5 or 6pm.

Most shipments to residential addresses are signature not required by default, and it's at the drivers discretion at that point to leave a delivery attempted notice or to leave the package at the door. If it gets stolen I think UPS is at fault, but it's a lot of paperwork and hassle that you don't want to deal with. For most companies the threshold for signature required is $250+, but they could add it to any package, it just cost them money whenever they do.

If it stays on the truck it goes back to the UPS depot not to the nearest ups store.

That agreed with, I've never had a problem doing so. Since starting a new job in April I can't be home when UPS delivers, so I just call them after the first delivery attempt and ask for it to be held at the local center for pick-up. They will for either 3 or 5 business days (I think 5). It's gone very smoothly for me with at least half a dozen packages in the past 2 months.

Not all packages require a signature and if this one doesn't then they will leave it. The thing to do is leave a note saying not to leave it. I've done this before, it's wicked easy.

Alternatively you can try to track down the driver. If you find the truck and show ID they will release the package to you.

This option tends to be far ore difficult.
