Everyone hates this game, which leaves me baffled. But not to worry. There's plenty of other games I have random obsessions with that I sometimes can't explain (Killing Time, Brandish, Castlequest....). But in this case, I find myself completely satisfied. The level design is....I'm sorry, but it's spectacular. I challenge anyone to give me detailed evidence as to how older Doom titles could come close to superior as far as this goes. My theory is everyone was butthurt that not enough was amp'd as far as the engine goes. They wanted moar "tree dee" because it's....N64 right? RIGHT?!!
But yeah. Graphics are very aesthetically appealing, music is amazing. Just overall epic, fun, atmospheric. It's got everything. I enjoy playing it far more than Doom and Doom 2. I just don't understand these, in /b/tard terms, "nostalgia-fags" cloying over those out dated levels when there are far superior ones out there.
I would go into the superiority of Bungie's Marathon but I'd rather not cause too big of a shit-storm. At least not now.

Doom 64 was my first N64 game. I liked it, played the shit out of it.
Of course I saw how limited the use of the system was when I played Mario as far as graphics and stuff, and It's a little bland to be revisited, but I still dig it.

Doom 64 was awesome. Hell I thought the SNES Doom was awesome, but when I played Doom64 the first thing I said was 'HOLY SHIT YOU CAN SEE THE SIDES AND BACKS OF ENEMIES NOW!!!!!?!?! AWESOME'
I then got Doom and Ultimate Doom on Playstation....sooo good.
Doom 64 is awesome. People didn't like it? Maybe they didn't like the fact that it wasn't the exact same enemies and weapons? I don't get it.
I loved it. The only thing I didn't like was how the default exit in some level abotu 2/3 of the way through will teleport you right to the final boss arena, thereby skipping and missing out on playing almost a third of the levels in the game, which you can only get to by accessing a secret exit in some level.
Other than that, yeah, Doom64 is great. Not as good as the Doom propers perhaps but still quite fun, and I enjoy the music and aesthetic as well.
I didn't even know this existed, but since I got an N64 not too long ago I will definitely be picking it up. When I looked for it on amazon I saw there was also a Quake 64 and a Duke Nukem 64. Are those worth grabbing also?

There is a pretty amazing source port of Doom64 out there.

Duke 64 was fucking awesome. You could do 4 player split-screen and even add bots. I played so many matches alone against bots with the difficulty cranked up. So much fucking fun.
Also, Doom 64 was awesome as well. I loved everything about that game, it's been far too long since I last played it.

haha. so many forgotten gems. i gotta recheck these..
it's funny. all these games got such bad reviews in their time, i swear. now i hear you guys raving about it here. so gnarly.
weirdest part of Duke Nukem 3D was the space port.
and yeah. never tried Doom 64's source port. I like the cartridge version ;3 (except all N64 joypads fuck up so damn fast)

I've seen weirder.:P
No obligitory link to the Doom comic yet? Yeah, I played the hell out of Doom 64 too - the only things I really missed were the awesome music and animations of the PC versions (seriously, no shotgun reloading? Heresy!). Oh, and the ability to quicksave/load. I especially liked the "laser" you could earn by doing a certain set of secret levels (I believe). That thing was fun.
As for Duke and Quake 64: they were both pretty good ports, considering the hardware; although anyone with a 360 and a couple of bucks to spare should get Duke 3D on XBLA, since it's probably cheaper.

oh yeah. and all the puzzles were genius. almost as genius as the levels ID made for Rise of the Triad. But not quite, in my opinion.
I never owned Doom 64 (though I really wanted it), but I did rent it once. I was a little put off by the different looks of the monsters and weapons, but a lot of that had to do with my total adoration over the original two games. I also remember the game being ridiculously dark, to the point that it was pretty much unplayable. I didn't know much about gamma and contrast back then, though. I really need to give them game another shot.
I did own Duke Nukem 64, though. Played the shit out of it. IIRC, the textures looked more detailed and the enemies used 3D models instead of sprites. It's been a long time since I played it, so I don't remember what else was different. I remember thinking the game looked uglier than I remembered when I bought the XBLA port. I didn't play much of the game on the PC. Most of my experience with it came from the N64 version.

All you need to know. Basically it was an entirely original game with new levels, re-rendered enemy models, some new weapons, and generally tweaked mechanics. Pretty darn good for a Doom game, tough as hell, too; like I said before, the only things missing were actual music, some weapon animations, and the ability to quicksave/load (you could only save between levels on a memory pak, which was a pain considering how hard the game got at times).
EDIT: Here, have some Doom 2 . . . now with those damn annoying vuvuzela thingies from the world cup! BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!!!!
Wish I'd played Doom 64, sounds intriguing. Were the enemies 3D, sprites, or some weird hybrid? Recall seeing some polygonal action on the box screen shots.
I'm pretty sure Duke 64 was still sprites, but that multiplayer was a blast. Especially the woeful AI on the Duke Nukem bots - facing a wall, jumping perpetually; "Ugh! Ugh! Ugh! Where is it?!"
Where indeed.

The enemies were still sprites, albeit higher-resolution versus the PC versions. A lot of people didn't like the redrawn designs, but I liked them.
The conversion I remember playing was the Absolution, based on the Doomsday engine (it was released a while ago in 03). Its old site host is dead, though, but you can find it scattered erstwhile (here's a Fileshitty link). It does require a legit doom2.wad, for reasons that baffle me.
When I bought my N64 at a pawn shop many years back, my neighbor gave me his copy of Doom 64 because he said it sucked, pointing to Turok 2 as the superior game. So naturally, I load up Turok 2, find it lacking, put in Doom 64, and proceed to play it to death (after cranking the brightness on my TV).
It was a port of Duke Nukem 3d, except they changed up some of the nudity stuff and they changed a weapon.
The graphics were worse; the textures were all less resolute and blurry. The PC version has higher resolution textures. They also removed the reflection effect of mirrors.
The enemies are all sprites except the final boss, which is polygonal. The final boss's stadium level is also changed as well.
That's all I can remember off hand. Still an excellent port and great game, very fun.

seriously...
Glad we could validate you in your argument from some other internet forum.
Something almost clay-mation-ey about the sprites was cool. And yeah, great music and level design.
