OK PC is creeping me out

All of a sudden it makes this rather loud running noise when I turn it on. As I'm typing this it turned less loud, but the noise still prevails. It sounds like an engine or something. What is going on?

First thought is that it's the processor's fan spinning extra fast in an attempt to cool the processor down. Anything blocking air intakes in the front or back of the case?

Dust-buildup on a fan is my first guess.

No, I don't think so. The fans are at the back, but the noise came from somewhere within the case. Why would the fans need to speed up if I just turned it on? To blow away dust?

It's not a hard thing to check. Alternatively, a bad hard-drive. The hard-drive definitely spins up every time you boot.

No, case fans generally don't change speed. I was referring to the processor's fan, which generally does change speed. Often if the inside of the computer doesn't get proper airflow, the inside temp rises and the processor's fan speeds up and starts working harder. That's why I thought maybe something was blocking front intakes, etc. It definitely won't hurt to crack it open and check for excess dust and blockage, as VC has suggested.

Also, check the CDROM drives, etc, as maybe a disc is just spinning up or something.

Well, I turned the PC off and on a few times and it seems the loud noise is gone. I was afraid something bad happened to the hard disk, it didn't sound normal to me to consider it came from fans, so in my panic I came here to ask for advice. Thanks anyway.

It might also be one of the fans needing lubrication or just wearing out.
Remember that apart from case fans there's usually one on the video card, CPU, chipset/motherboard and in the power supply; sometimes there's also a case fan in the lower front of the case - blowing air over the hard drive(s).

The noise was back, so I opened the case and noticed layers of dust. I cleaned the fans which hopefully fixed it. Thanks, everyone!

I just had to replace a case fan because it wore out. It started making this terrible grinding sound. I was worried that it was my PSU, but fortunatly it was a mere case fan.

If the noise is still there, you can easily discover which fan is making the noise. Turn on the computer, and use your finger to stop each fan until the noise stops. Put your finger on the flat, middle part of the fan, not in to the blades. A couple seconds of stoppage won't damage any of your components.

this might sound silly but.. have you bought a new game lately?

I ask this because in my new build pc (built to be silent) i bought myself a nice new dvd writer, happily trucking along with it all, nice and quiet, then i bought myself a copy of Far Cry. I put it in the drive, and all of a sudden it was like sitting next to a jet engine, these really REALLY loud vrooooooooom noises. It also does it with Fear, Oblivion and Dreamfall... any other disks it works nice and quiet... but if i leave one of those in the drive, turning it on can be heard all over the house, then dies down about 5 minutes later....

just thought i'd throw that out there incase someone else might suffer the same problems as I... damn dvd drive

Goddamn noise. So I checked it more thoroughly and it is indeed the case fan at the back that's been causing it. I've stopped the fan for a second and let it run again and the noise disappeared. The strange thing is that the noise comes up occasionally when I start up. How should I fix this? It's an 80mm fan if it's relevant.

Have you tried the lubrication note above? Failing that, you can buy a new one fairly cheaply (<$10)

I just bought one of these. You might be able to find something cheaper (No shipping) locally at a computer store. I usually just replace fans when they go. They aren't expensive enough to warrant a repair attempt, in my opinion.

I picked up a Silverstone 120mm with a controller for $15 the other week (I've got an Antec Sonata 2 on the way). Fans are dead easy to find and replace.

It's not really a repair - you just drop a... drop of oil on the bearings and it runs fine for the next year or so in most cases.

Sometimes they do just wear out, but that kind of noise isn't as loud.
