Do both the right and left side speakers play the single channel? Is your stereo OEM?

If you can change the balance does it actually change the output?

    They both play yeah

The stereo is aftermarket, though not anything fancy

And yeah the balance changes the output

Try playing the CD on a different CD player that definitely has stereo output, then you can confirm whether it's the disc or car stereo that is the problem.

Usually when something is in mono it compresses both channels so that all of the L&R comes out both the L and R speakers. Unless your source is somehow ridiculous and only has the L channel and you're flipping that from side to side.

When you balance all the way right, do you get the right channel stuff? Same Q with balancing left. If so, then your source material is probably okay. If not, then there's a good chance your source material is buggered. If you lose audio completely when you balance 100% in that direction, your speakers aren't hooked up or your deck is fucked.

Now if you're saying you only get one channel when the balance is centered, but if you shift right or left you can hear those channels, then you're either confused and that's not actually the case or your deck is broken in the weirdest manner I have ever heard of.

Try playing normal radio on your radio too. Lets rule everything else out before we try to rewire it.
