Need a good PC game for 12 straight hours

I want to find some game, preferably downloadable on Steam, that I can play with my friend tomorrow for like 12 hours straight.

We're looking for something, probably in the RPG genre, that starts off nice and exciting, rather than a boring 1 hour intro and then running around slaying wolves with your wooden sword for the next 6 hours.

What do you think of Dragon Age or The Witcher? They're both reasonably priced right now.

Also, since we've both been pretty avid PC gamers for a while, if you guys could offer a bunch of suggestions I'd appreciate it, in case we've played whatever you guys recommend.

Dragon age is interesting from the Get Go

    The Witcher slightly less so

How do you feel about older turn based strategy?

Is there anywhere you can buy SMAC online?

Mass Effect 1 and 2 both dump you into the game pretty quickly.

Dragon Age is really good from beginning to end. The Witcher really lulls at times...

If you're playing with your friend, then are you really wanting single player games? Dragon Age is a wonderful game and is interesting from the beginning onward, but it's also a single player RPG.

Hmmm... if you want to old-school it up you could get Baldur's Gate and do the multiplayer for that. I'd recommend BG2 actually, especially if you've already played them, but you could also start from the beginning too. That could be cool I suppose

Mass effect 2 is really hard to beat in terms of exciting from beginning to end.

Dragon Age starts quickly enough (depending on your class, some of the intros are kind of long), but it drags at some parts and some of the dungeons are dungeon-grindy.

There aren't that many RPGs that are worthy of a 12 hour marathon, sadly. If you never played Vampire: The Masquerade, that is definitely worth a buy.

I know you said RPG, but you're playing with a friend, and so I can't just NOT mention Civ IV. It's what came immediately to mind when I saw the title, because that's what my friend and I have been doing a lot over our weekends lately.

There's always the tried and true option of Diablo 2. Mod it up if you want to add a little spice.

I did this once with my friend and was incredible fun. Looking more at 200 hours than 12 though.

Have you Tried Neverwinter Nights 2? Also, I second Mass Effect 1 or 2.

Also, if you're willing to not go for RPG (as stated) Civ4, Master of Orion 2 or 3 (I like the epic width and depth of 3), or Patrician 3. You could also try picking up one of these weird little games that my friends and I actually got a lot of enjoyment out: Dominions 3, Romance of the Three Kingdoms (I like 7), and Warlords: Battlecry III. Romance and Warlords both have strong RPG elements, but are used in a very different way.

Always used to end up playing Warcraft 3 custom maps. There was just so much choice and was lots of fun.
