Cancelling Gametap
FandyienBut Otto, what about us? Registered Userregular
Has anyone here had any experience with GameTap? I tried the 99 Cent trial thing, realized it was incredibly awful, and I'm trying to terminate my account now. However, there isn't really an obvious way to do it, and after looking around the account settings page for awhile I'm at a total loss.
Anybody else experience this?

I've never used them, but Wiki says:
To cancel one's account, a customer must call a GameTap representative. Some customers (as of April 2006) have reported being pressured to stay subscribed.

Wow. I knew this service was awful from the moment it forced me to watch advertisements when I tried to play a game, but that is utterly ridiculous, especially considering that service is only available during weekdays.

I've successfully canceled from GameTap. Just call and tell them you want to cancel. They'll ask you why you want to cancel, and try to make you feel guilty, etc., but just be persistent and they'll cancel your subscription. The phone call took me maybe five minutes total. Yes, it's a ridiculous hoop you have to jump through to cancel, but I actually had a pretty good experience with GameTap overall... due to technical difficulties that tech support couldn't fix, I ended up getting over a month of GameTap absolutely free. Then I canceled. I got to legally play Super Burger Time and Crazy Taxi, and I never paid GameTap a cent.
Weird, I think it's a great service, but call them and tell them in no uncertain terms that you want them to cancel your subscription. Regardless of whether or not they try to pressure you, at the end of the day, they can't legally do anything but cancel your subscription. I have no personal experience with speaking to a Gametap representative on the phone, but if what others are saying is true, that they are similar to AOL reps, just be calm, professional, and unwavering. These people have rebuttal books to try to sway your mind or argue against any argument you throw at them. The key is to call with firm resolve and not engage them in conversation or debate.
- "Hello, I would like to cancel my subscription to Gametap."
- "No, I am not interested in hearing about this special deal."
- "No, I am not interested in continuing my subscription under any circumstances."
- "No, I would not like any additional service, free or otherwise."
- "Would you like my information now so you can cancel my subscription, or is there someone else I can speak to?"
Simple, effective, to the point. That last one is key AND frustrating for the rep, because you are choosing to completely ignore whatever it is they've just said. The point is, you are calling to cancel your subscription, not have a conversation with some random sales representative. Don't give them anything to argue with you about. Rebut their rebuttals before they even pull the book out.

Yeah that's why.
