It was only the first batch that had the screw over tightened. You hear about it because the first batch buyers are finally causing the crack to occur and talk about it.
Actually I'm on my fourth Lite because of the crack. The first one was a launch unit and it got the crack after a couple months, and each subsequent replacement unit (except for the one I have now) got the crack. I doubt that my second replacement unit was from the first batch, but it still got the crack after a couple months.
But there's really no need to worry about it; if you get the crack Nintendo will replace your Lite free of charge, no questions asked. And they'll restart your one-year warranty too.
I strongly doubt it's 'two new screens' so much as a whole new DS. You rarely get back the same system you sent in.
I hear that, and you're probably right, but it came with a paper listing the things done on the unit, screens replaced, battery tested, cleaned and tested to specs... Maybe someone who's gotten a replacement unit can let us know if the papers said that it was a replacement rather than a repair?

Nintendo of America will. Outside North America, things are a bit more hit-and-miss.

I called Ninendo today. The guy said we have to ship it to them in their prepaid box and they'll inspect it. He said if it looks serious enough, the repair is free...
My white DS Lite cracked about a month or so ago, and I too forgot about it until now. I told my mom what happened when I first discovered the crack, then left. Being the mom she is, she put a small dab of superglue on it without even asking me. Should I worry about the crack? I'm very careful with my lite, but I don't want it getting worse.

Er, speaking of finding the Pink DS lites, will there ever be the other colors in the US? I'm still hoping for the Navy blue one.
I can see how that infamous hinge is screwed overtight, but it shows no sign of cracking
Also, there is a crack developing, but it's entirely in the wrong place. In order for that crack to break the hinge, it'll probably have to cleave all the way through the main portion.

Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
So I have a white DS Lite with a crack... any chance I can get my replacement in another color?
That's what i'm wondering. I'd love to get a black, but the chances are probably slim. Take what you can get, I guess.
My hinge only cracked two days ago, and it's pretty serious. There's a big gap in between each of the cracks, and opening and closing it makes a sickening "kuh-chuck-crack" noise.
Thinking about it gives me the heebies and the jeebies.
A bit off topic, but my question is does any know when you flip open the DS Lite to a certain point where it 'clicks' and sort of locks in place? Is it possible to open it beyond the first click? My retarded friends who come over always seems to forcefully open it where I can hear 3 or more 'clicks'. Just wondering if it can go beyond the initial click.
Yes, you can move it further so the screens are completely flat, rather than at an angle.
So, I'm calling Nintendo tomorrow about the crack. I don't care about different colors (I'd actually prefer to keep it white), but I'm thinking of asking for a new replacement unit, rather than a refurbished one. I really don't want to go through this a third time, plus I'm also a collector, so having a refurbished unit (with a scratch on it when I got it) really bugs me. Any chances they'll do this for me?

That's debatable. I refuse to open mine past the initial click. My younger cousins insist on opening it flat, though. I wince in pain when they do it, even though it's probably designed to be opened that far.
Luckily, my DS Lite developed the crack before they even touched it, so I know that opening it too far wasn't the cause of the crack.
My hinge crack first developed as soon as the hot weather arrived here. I suspect that this wasn't coincidence, especially given that the crack is caused by an over-tightened screw. The metal likely expanded in the heat, causing the plastic to crack.
white ds lites are still having problems with the crack. Got my launch unit replaced when the new colors came out and also bought a black one.
and now the white one is cracked again.

I think that question makes sense....
