How does The Guild 2's gameplay compare to Sid Meier's Pirates, if at all?
I'm tempted...
The two are nowhere near alike.
The Guild II is actually kind of hard to describe, because the scope of it and the number of things you can do and see are so large. It's basically a simulator of medieval life, from being a blacksmith, a thief, a banker, or even a politician and more. There are rival families and businesses and political opponents to compete with, and you can you deal with them in a number of ways. And you can also do all of this in multiplayer, too.
I particularly like holding political office, trying to beguile or cheat my way into positions of my choice or influencing decisions and policy making with my high Charisma, Rhetoric, and Empathy skills. One day, my character was walking down the street to read a poem to a woman I was courting. On my way to her home I came across rogues standing outside a prominent man's house. When the man stepped outside, the rogues attacked him, picked him up once they knocked him unconscious, put him in a cart, and strolled off before someone reported them to the guards. I could have called the guards myself, but I couldn't help but watch this spectacle. The following day I had a court date, and the case actually involved the kidnapped man. His wife had accused a certain rogue of being involved with the kidnapping.

What you just described sounds like the coolest thing ever. I wonder whats up with the 61% average rating on metacritic. Seems like a flawed gem, something which I'm fully capable of enjoying for its strongpoints.
So this seems like as good a place as any to post this issue. My wife noticed yesterday that when she runs steam on her computer, it'll run for usually around 30 seconds to a minute before windows comes up saying there was an error and Steam needs to be closed.
I looked around on the net, but didn't really seem to find much that dealt with Steam crashes, mostly it was crashes related to Steam games. I did, however, notice that her Steam is located in C:/Program Files (x86)/Valve/Steam rather than C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam. Currently, I'm having her copy the Steam folder out of that Valve folder and move it into the Program Files x86 folder proper so that her directory matches what it should be. Could this be the reason for the error, or might it be something else?
If this doesn't work, our next step will be to remove everything from inside the steam folder except the steam.exe and steamapps folder and try a reinstallation. Was just curious if any of you experienced anything similar to this recently, and found a fix for it.
Reposting this, as we've narrowed it down to only crashing when she is accessing her Games Library. Works fine in the Store, Community, etc, but when she's in the Library, after a short period of time, it'll crash out as previously described. Any ideas?
Is there an error message being provided? i found some reports of people getting this: "Crash: Steam.exe (main exception): Unable to load library Steam.dll"
one thing that was reported as a possible problem were firewall/anti-virus programs (Norton etc)
I assume she's using a PC (vista?) the only other things I see are related to Linux users running it under WINE.
My Steam Community game list seems to have gone crazy. It listed like 50 more games than I own (Bunch of mods and some... demos?) and later the number dropped down to 15 extra items (extra mods... and a few of demos.)
So, whoever said that FlatOut UC was pretty dull was right. I was hoping for a passable Burnout clone since the open worldiness of Burnout Paradise isn't my thing, but it just seems slow and it's a long, boring process to try and take out other cars. I want instant gratification with my smashy smashy.
But hey, $2. That's only the cost of, say, some cheap foodstuff or prepared drink.
every game with a hacking minigame should just copy uplink
It seems like a really hard game too. On all the beginner missions it seams my trace tracker is up to 70% before my password cracker is even close to cracking a login. I devote CPU to the cracker program too.
I just played the Guild 2 Pirates and I think something in that mod/patch gives computer players a shitload of money. I purchased a title so I could run a second building, and that set off a building frenzy that completely filled the area inside the town walls with workshops for rival dynasties.
I went to the Uplink public bbs, copied down a while bunch of IPs, then used them to reroute my signal like crazy.
I usually have like 1500 seconds to complete my hack... :P
But I haven't progressed much past 1 or 2 difficulty levels beyond beginner. So this tactic may not work very well on the more difficult missions.
It does, you just have to make sure to route your first hop off of the InterNic server, and clean your logs on that server. Then the passive traces are stonewalled.

Btw, is there a way to leave no traces whatsoever?
I wipe all the logs clean after hacking, but disconnecting seems to leave one final log.

Yup, thats why you never delete your connect log on Internic. Delete everything else, but leave the connection log. That way when you disconnect anyone who traces can't find the bounce, and sees only normal connect/disconnect activity. If you delete the connection log, you still leave a disconnection log, and now it has no matching connection log.
Very suspicious... :?

The mod doesn't just give them more money than you. It's a component of the mod called Dangerous Dynasties, which is an attempt to make the AI a bit more difficult to handle. I guess in the base game it was far too easy and predictable. The mod basically randomizes how much money each dynasty gets at the start of the game (although I believe you always receive 15,000), as well as what titles they receive. It sounds like you just got unlucky. :P
I've started games and seen various ranges of development and wealth status of rival dynasties and towns. I actually had one dynasty die off within the first half hour. Ah, the poor Schwarzenegger family.
Edit: I'll have A Farewell to Dragons downloaded off Steam in about nine minutes. I'll try it then and post my impressions.

That may be. I noticed there's another modlet that's supposed to save NPC dynasties from going broke, giving them a cash infusion and a building if they get too low. Apparently it activates after you purchase a title, which I did right off the bat. I wonder if that triggered.
The mod also makes the towns develop super quickly, for some reason. Between that and the rivals being balanced for people who know what they're doing, it's a little weird, but it does add some nice features.

Do not delete everything! Only delete the "Connection from 127.0.0.1 forwarded to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Thats the important one. Get rid of it and their done. There is some guy that logs into NiC a lot, must need to check out addresses a lot! But if all it shows is some guy disconnecting a few times, and nothing else? Bingo. Also, use the highest level log deleter. Take out loans if you have to.
So I had been wanting some RTS's to play for a while to keep me preoccupied until SCII comes out. I happen to see this thread and notice that there is a Steam sale going on (I'm normally a console gamer so I didnt notice earlier). Ended up getting the THQ pack, which includes a shat ton of games, of which there are two I wanted in particular (Company o Heroes and Dawn of War 2). I grabbed Torchlight too just cause it was only 5 bucks. Im gonna have a ton of games to play over the summer now, but I must say, Im a Steam lover now.

So should we wait till we get used to the game a bit before installing that mod?
Maybe. It doesn't say much about bug fixes. A lot seems to be extra stuff to do to your enemies, and help for poor rival AI.
It does include a good number of bug fixes, and it does indeed give you a lot of new features to use yourself. I don't believe the feature list on the mod's page is everything, though. The mod package includes the Back to the Roots and Sovereign Edition mods, which are very large mods themselves. It also includes the unofficial patch (presumably bug fixes), as well as individual mods, fixes, and other tweaks.
I think if you want a more stable version of the game, with some neat new features, try out that mod package. The base game, on the other hand, will probably be easier.

Sure it will, numerous people here have noted that even though there are good deals, they're not interested because they already got them. All of them.
But really, the only things I've gotten this sale have been smaller indie stuff. Like flotilla. Or Guild 2. Or ghostbuster. Or Kane and Lynch.
The only thing that is killing me is waiting for these downloads to finish... Dammit internet speed up!
You can fix anything by yelling at it
Agh, tell me about it. I've only been getting around 80 to 180 KB/s, with it usually hanging around 100 KB/s. I can actually do about 1.1 MB/s. Hopefully things will speed up when the Steam sale ends and people aren't buying and downloading so many games. :P
In any case, A Farewell to Dragons finished, so I'm going to go start that up.

Today's damage is Alpha Prime, Ghost Master, and The Guild II: Pirate Pimps Ahoy, Avast Ye Lubbers!
I didn't even break six dollars. I don't think I've spent more than fifteen during the whole sale. I've gotten six games, I think. There are some awesome deals out there, even if you are a frugal bastard like me.

Dammit you guys are making me kinda want Guild 2. Guess I'll go for the Pirate one, since it's so cheap, more interesting setting (to me) and has all the features of the original.
Also gonna get Shatter, seems cool, kinda like Space Invaders Extreme for Arkanoid, and I love me some SIE.
I'm kinda tempted by Void, but gonna pass. Seems like something that might be cooler as a Let's Play from someone who knows what they are doing. Played the original Flatout, was kinda fun, but I have Dirt and Grid and still need to play those.

I was resisting Guild II until I watched the New Features vid for the Pirates expansion.
Every game should have Pirate Wenches. When I saw that, I was through the checkout (with Alpha Prime and Ghost Master in tow) before I knew what was going on.
