Dammit you guys are making me kinda want Guild 2. Guess I'll go for the Pirate one, since it's so cheap, more interesting setting (to me) and has all the features of the original.
The Guild II - Pirates of the European Seas includes all the maps of the original game. It just adds a few more, one of which is very big with about four cities and has a large sea for you to sail in.

Hey Dashui, any impressions on A Farewell To Dragons?
If it's good times, I'll probably end up going with that, Guild 2 Pirates (if it indeed includes the maps of the base game with it), and Shatter for about 11 bucks.

I just gave it a short try, so I can't tell you much about the characters and the story beyond the very beginning.
The game basically starts with the main character, a doctor from our world and time, finding himself transported to a steampunk world of of magic, elves, dwarves, and other races. There's no voice acting in the game proper, although the intro had a terribly voiced cinematic. I only got so far as waking up in the middle of the forest with your companion and fighting my way to the nearest town.
The gameplay is very much like Baldur's Gate and other old school PC RPGs. You have a skill bar, you level up and invest points in attributes and skills, and you can even select perks during level up. You can control a party of six, I believe, and of course select your dialog responses. The skill trees look interesting, with a good amount of choice. The weapon choices are even more interesting. I ended up finding a pistol, and apparently there are even assault rifles, gattling guns, and even nuclear weapons you can use.
Graphically, it won't blow you away, but it does its job well enough. There is a thick layer of fog that you can't remove, but since it's an isometric game it hasn't bothered me too much. You might find yourself fighting with the camera controls a little, though . The camera doesn't follow your characters, so you have to use the mouse or the WASD keys to keep up with them. When you move your mouse near the edges for the screen, the camera shoots off in that direction, so if you mind unintentionally move it where you didn't intend.
The areas you explore are huge, and there's no level scaling. Right away in the beginning I saw some level 40 undead creatures off into the forest. You can certainly explore quite a bit of land, and since you can move the camera anywhere you want and see all the creatures, you can avoid unwanted fights with higher level mobs.
Like I said, I only played about half an hour, and so I can't give you an opinion on whether you should or shouldn't buy it yet. I'll need to play more first. I am going to try some more tonight and tomorrow, so I'll give you updated impressions before the sale ends. :P
There is another RPG I discovered through the Steam sale that you might be interested in, though - Spellforce 2: Gold Edition.

Yeah, I picked up the Spellforce series when it was on sale a few months back, and it's fantastic! It's a great hybrid mix of Warcraft and Diablo, with charm to boot.
I picked up Red Faction: Guerilla and Guild 2: Pirates, while waiting for your in-depth impressions of Farewell to Dragons.
I guess what I'm looking for in Farewell To Dragons is a nice homage to oldschool CRPGs, in a unique setting. I understand it's Russian, so the translation/writing may be a bit rough around the edges, but if the gameplay is solid, and the characters are fairly well-realized, I can live with janky controls and lackluster writing.

Ya I read that on Steam Forums after. So literally no reason to get vanilla. Strange

Yeah, it's definitely a nice homage to the old school RPGs. And the setting is apparently really good, or so I've read. I'm going to play more of it now. While I still can't give you an opinion on the characters or the story yet, I have read comments that said they're actually quite good. It's one reason why I decided to pick it up for seven dollars.
The translation, though, is pretty humorous. For the most part it's fine, although occasionally there are lines like this:
"We are giving you last chance. See, we're trying resolve everything in a peaceful way."

Uh, this is interesting: I messed around with Torchleech and now the game stopped working entirely. I had Steam check the files etc. and even deleted and redownloaded it to no avail. It just crashes while loading the title screen. o_O

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
I have a lot of games from GOG. I love that place. Sometimes they get junk but a lot of times they pull in some seriously polished gems. I do wish they had more games coming in more often though. I check about once a week if I think about it.
However, Steam has a lot of games that GOG will probably never carry and that is fine with me. I don't mind spreading the wealth between them.
I don't really see them competing with each other, like their editorial hinted at, because they're going in opposite directions. Steam generally moves forward with new releases, while GOG moves backwards with old releases. I suppose it's difficult sometimes to work out the rights to various games and being a smallish team, but as an end user I just want them to release old games more often.
But that's that, let's go back to thinking about today's Steam sales. Godammit, I want Risen or AvP today.
Never heard of Uplink; after some searching, I think I'll gift it for my brother and I.
Just get the introversion pack, it's the same price (if not cheaper) as any of the games by themselves
Definitely get the pack. It's so full of win. I already had disc versions of 3 of those games and I still bought it because Introversion has yet to make a bad game and rarely do their games go on sale like this.
So I tried the guildIIpirates, and the suggested mod.
Made a necromancer, got to the second season.
6 thugs/fences jump out and have my guy down to 10% before I even realize what is going on.
A single guard runs to my defense only to get cut down.
I get kidnapped.
I get asked for 5k in gold for ransom(I have like 1k, and like 3k worth of goods I was getting ready to sell)
I say ok I'll pay it.
I immediatly get asked for 2k in ransom.
I say ok I'll pay it.
I get released.
They immediatly ask for another 4k in ransom.
I say call guards.
They chase after my guy, cut him down in the street and it's game over.

You should never forget that you are playing a dynasty and that every other dynasty hates your guts. You can't just be a simple smith, you gotta be a bastard.

So this seems like as good a place as any to post this issue. My wife noticed yesterday that when she runs steam on her computer, it'll run for usually around 30 seconds to a minute before windows comes up saying there was an error and Steam needs to be closed.
I looked around on the net, but didn't really seem to find much that dealt with Steam crashes, mostly it was crashes related to Steam games. I did, however, notice that her Steam is located in C:/Program Files (x86)/Valve/Steam rather than C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam. Currently, I'm having her copy the Steam folder out of that Valve folder and move it into the Program Files x86 folder proper so that her directory matches what it should be. Could this be the reason for the error, or might it be something else?
If this doesn't work, our next step will be to remove everything from inside the steam folder except the steam.exe and steamapps folder and try a reinstallation. Was just curious if any of you experienced anything similar to this recently, and found a fix for it.
Reposting this, as we've narrowed it down to only crashing when she is accessing her Games Library. Works fine in the Store, Community, etc, but when she's in the Library, after a short period of time, it'll crash out as previously described. Any ideas?
Is there an error message being provided? i found some reports of people getting this: "Crash: Steam.exe (main exception): Unable to load library Steam.dll"
one thing that was reported as a possible problem were firewall/anti-virus programs (Norton etc)
I assume she's using a PC (vista?) the only other things I see are related to Linux users running it under WINE.
Good luck.
Actually, it appears we fixed it by renaming the clientregistry.blob and rerunning Steam. Steam updated, and seems to not be crashing anymore. Thanks for the suggestion though!
Pulled the trigger on the Guild 2 Pirates and Red Orchestra deals. I've now got 2 guest passes good for 10 free days of Red Orchestra playtime. If anyone wants one, leave a link to your steam ID. First come, first served.

This Steam sale has actually gotten me to buy a game that isn't on Steam at all. I like RE5 so much that I've ordered the Wii version of RE4.
I'm considering the very same thing.
I am going through my 3rd playthrough of RE4 right now and it's up there with my all time favorite games (beating a game once is hard enough for me, doing one 3 times in a row is completely unheard of) but I was afraid to get RE5 because of the forced co-op nonsense. I won't be playing with anyone online so how is the AI of the other character? I saw how trashy single player Lost Planet 2 was and associated them with each other because they are both by Capcom. Is RE5 any good if it's just me playing? It's not on sale anymore so I am not rushing on it, but maybe down the road.
Back to RE4, playing it the first time is scary and wrecked my nerves, playing a second time with upgraded weapons makes it fun, playing it a third (well, second and a half) with the unlimited rocket launcher makes it a fun action game. Playing through it again with the unlimited rocket launcher and chicago typewriter makes it ridiculous.
I'm still somewhat in shock that I haven't bought anything yet during this sale. That'll change during the final day, but still. I'll at least grab The Witcher and the id super pack. The pack is cheap enough now for me to justify buying it despite owning about half of it in some form or another. I wish the original Heretic were on Steam, though. That was a such a great game.
Has anyone checked out Sniper: Ghost Warrior yet? The concept sounds awesome and the trailer looked pretty good, but I'm curious to hear some hands on impressions before actually plunking down the e-cash for it.

I just bought the Introversion pack for Uplink since I already have everything else in the pack. I figured the price wasn't going to get any lower on that one.
I just wanted to say that, at this point, if you don't own Torchlight, you're a soulless shell of a human being.
I own it, but as a terrible unbalanced knockoff of a game that you have to spend a bunch of time getting mods for to make it playable, I am not a fan.
Is that alright? I own it, so I'm still good?
You're terrible. It's perfectly playable without mods, and the ease with which the user can customize his gameplay experience is amazing.

I never actually finished Torchlight because I started it up on normal difficulty and as it turns out, normal isn't normal at all, it's a mislabeled very easy difficulty. Quite soon the whole thing turned into a monotonous grind lacking any and all challenge, and as you can't just up the difficulty without widgeting with mods and stuff, I stopped playing because fuck it, it wasn't interesting enough to work my way up to where I was.
