Please Help Me ID a Game!

So Penny Arcadians, I have searched high and low for an answer to this question that has been vexing me for nearly a year now.

When I was about 10 (so, 1990 or maybe 1991) my brother got a Nintendo game for Christmas from his godmother and unfortunately, neither of us can recall the name of the game.

It was essentially some kind of side-scrolling ninja game, definitely Japanese, where you are FLYING through the air. Your jumps would take you insanely high up and you could just keep running and jumping through the level. It was, to our recollections, not very cartoony, and we both recall running through a jungle or rain forest for the better half of the game, possibly armed only with a sword.

My brother used to think it was called Thunder & Lightning, but after finally tracking down THAT game, we determined that it was not the game we were looking for.

I wish I had more info to give you, but if ANYBODY can think of the answer, you will have a friend for life.

    Yes, and I'm saying that you named an entirely different game that doesn't even come close to being correct, and wasn't even made within a decade of the one described.

    Baron, That_Guy, it's almost certainly Legend of Kage like darkmayo said.

    The only other valid option is its very underrated sequel, Demon Sword.

    Hmm... judging by the screen shots, it looks similar, but I can't verify without seeing it in action. I'll see if I can track a cartridge of this down and get back to you guys. Thanks very much for your help though!
