[WoW] <What Is Delicious> Horde Guild on Dark Iron-US

A new guild? Now?

Yep. The way we see it, now's the time to get ready for Cataclysm, and we have some specific ideas about what a guild ought to be. Some folks are very excited by our somewhat strange guild concept. Most of our idiom (I'm apparently fail at internal linking; 5:38 FTW) can be deduced by reading the guild charter here.

While required reading for all recruits, that's a bit long for an intro, so...

We're Penny Arcade guys, and inveterate WoW players, so... all the antics and shitfucking you might expect from such a crowd apply.

TL;DR for our Pros: Player-centered, rather than toon-centered focus; experienced, skilled, rotating officer corps; top-notch allies--the one and only Panda Motherfucking Attack.

Chief among Cons would be that the application process is an ordeal, but this is not an accident. Feel free to PM me with questions prior to a server or faction transfer. Good things come to those who wait.

Guild charter resized my browser and started a fake virus scan. There must be better ways to recruit new members.

If that shit is shady linking, I doubt this is the actual Siderion from the PAA. It might just be someone using his name to add validity to the links or whatever.

Edit - Wait he subscribed 2 years ago. What the eff. Why is one of the links reporting malicious intent? <_<

oh, sid. you've done it now.

I'd be severely tempted to join up with you if I ever resub, but racechanging all my alts would be a pain.

ed: anyone else come over to start this with you?

edit2: it's not shady linking, it's just some phpbb forum. Chrome doesn't like it because who knows why; it does that sometimes.

It does it in other browsers as well. I'm not going to remove it for now as to give the OP a chance to fix it. Caveat emptor, guys.

As for people coming over... let's just say yes. Some folks have been very excited about the idea.

I have no clue about malware stuff, guys. I run Firefox and it doesn't give me any trouble. Our site was just knocked out less than 24 hours ago though. Maybe we were hacked or something. Until I can sort this all out with our web guy (who is reliable, an old guildie), I'm changing the link in the OP to link to this post. The guild charter is copypasta'd below. The WID website is which is click at your own risk until I can get stuff sorted out. Mods: If this is an unsatisfactory work-around, please make whatever changes you feel necessary. There is no malicious intent here and I won't take offense.

    What Is Delicious

    http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/7/12/

    Guild Description:

What Is Delicious is a World of Warcraft guild for fans (of all levels of dedication) of the comic Penny Arcade that is dedicated to the proposition that gamers' fake lives can and should enhance their real ones. It is also into some seriously zen shit.

    Rule Number One:

    "Don't be a dick."--Gabe

"Arcades were more than just magnificent geek Shagri-Las, filled with all sorts of video games and pinball machines. They were a vital part of my generation's social development. If I beat another kid in a two-player game, and taunted him mercilessly with explicit references to his mother's sex life--and my role in it--the way some online gamers do today? He would have justifiably kicked the everliving shit out of me. So, I learned, in arcades, the importance of good sportsmanship. Because arcades were physical places, staffed by real people, we had to worry about a lot more than getting kicked off a server if we were complete idiots in a game. And I feel like a cranky old man by bringing this up at all, but there's a lot of you here, so... when you're playing online, have fun, but... Don't be a dick, OK?" --Wil Wheaton, PAX 2007 Keynote Address.

To be completely and totally clear, "being a dick" is knowingly acting in a way that degrades another player's play experience. More positively stated: "Do value other people's play experience." We always want to make the game better for people. For example, ninjaing loot wastes the time of everybody that contributed to getting the drop. This is a clear degradation of folks' play experience, which is why it's a universally hated practice. Bailing on an instance wastes people's time getting a replacement, degrading their play experience. Of course, sometimes one's playtime is cut short unavoidably; the player that tries to secure his or her own replacement before logging is for this reason regarded more favorably. Why? Well, it's not rocket science. He or she gave a damn about the rest of the group having a good time.

PvP on a PvP server, even under unfair circumstances, is part of the fun of the game. Keeping an eye over one's shoulder while leveling adds an extra layer of suspense and challenge to the game. Dickery arises when the suspense of challenge fades away into the pointless wasting of somebody's time; a skull repeatedly killing a gray represents neither suspense nor challenge. One person getting their jollies out of ruining another's day, whether by habitually preventing them from completing their dailies, camping an inn, or exploiting game geography (rooftops, etc.), is simply pathetic and sad.

Causing personal offense can certainly ruin somebody's day. Offense is usually caused by three things: malice, ignorance, or failure to respect difference of opinion. Intentionally pushing somebody's buttons out of malice is clear dickery. Offense out of ignorance, on the other hand, isn't necessarily dickery, as long as there is a sincere effort to cease to cause offense after the offender becomes aware of his offense. Insoluble differences of opinion will of course arise, and may result in people deciding to do their own things and keep to themselves to prevent continuing offense. More generally, Penny Arcade is a rated-R comic, and /g will also be rated-R. We know as a matter of accomplished fact that this is not incompatible with Rule Number One. If you don't like this, there's this really awesome guild called Panda Attack that keeps their stuff PG. Failing to honor specific requests for no swearing or other obscenity (e.g. Kids are in the room, headphones are broken, please no F-Bombs on vent.) is a prime example of dickery out of failure to respect difference of opinion.

What Is Delicious is of the opinion that Penny Arcade is cool enough to have a guild about, that playing in a way that respects the experiences of other people we play with is valuable, and that giving up some things that we personally want as individuals is part of having an active, close-knit community that enhances the play experience for all of us. Excluding people that disagree with these opinions is not "dickery"; it's agreeing to disagree.

    Guild Values:

    Guild Culture.
Since guilds that have a focus that is larger than a single raid are generally not the sort that can enforce rules by direct means (FIFTY DKP MINUS!!!) other than kicking people, it is important that a guild's leadership actively pay attention to the indirect forces operating on guild members' behavior. Habits and traditions are of prime significance in a system where they are the only forces acting to prevent trouble and keep teh dramaz down to a dull roar. Correcting trouble by kicking somebody and having them leave in a large dramasplosion with everybody they play with is less desirable than fostering an environment where "being who you hang with" is a positive thing for everybody involved. Guild leaders and Officers will set examples that will affect their communities, whether they want to or not. As such, actively ensuring that such examples are good ones is a duty inherent in leadership positions.

    Community.
WID values being a Penny Arcade guild and being a part of larger communities as well: Penny Arcade fans, webcomic scrubs, Dark Iron peeps, WoW players in general. Contributing to these communities creates something larger than ourselves that enhances the experience of everybody involved. If we just wanted to play with the same six people every night, that would be a helluva lot easier than having a guild. WID invests in its larger communities that we're not as tight with not just because it's good karma that is likely to return to us, but more importantly because it's just how we ourselves want to roll. We are committed to upholding our guild values. You should expect to have to pass a very minor quiz testing your Penny Arcade fandom to get in. You don't HAVE to read it a lot to be in the guild, but idea is for it to be a cool, fun thing we all have in common, so it's recommended.

    Humility.
WID rejects much of the "traditional" gamer culture of self-importance. Of course, we enjoy competing and prevailing in the game, but such pursuits are means to other ends, and are not ultimate goals in and of themselves. We feel that taking the e-peening down a notch or forty-seven leads to a better game experience.

    Service.
WID wants to be a bright spot on people's play experience. WID members go beyond helping each other and their allies to create a mutually beneficial community. Once a month, we each spend a typical day's playtime helping people on the server in general, and update our player note with the date. In keeping with the values of Humility and Service, all Guild "Leadership" positions, such as Officer and Guild Leader, are explicitly service positions, with attendant duties to the community.

    Equanimity.
Entertainment should be derived from the game, not from inter-personal conflict. Drama in WID is neither published nor classified, so keep it out of /g and other public channels. If a dispute cannot be resolved by the involved guild member alone, he or she should get an officer: this is explicitly part of their job.

    Inquiry.
WID values introspection and the examination of values and habits. We believe such activities enhance the player's understanding of what truly is delicious. Inherent in this is the belief that it IS more than candy... By that same token, this value indicates that what, itself, is delicious, which is to say... inquiry. At the same time, however, there's no denying that on some level it's candy. Candy is delicious. While we believe that playing the game with your brain in gear is more fun, over-thinking things is counterproductive.

    Participation.
As in, guild-wide participation. Everybody is expected to actively fight the completely natural yet problematic tendency to only hang with your clique/arena team/10-man guys/whatever. Whenever someone puts the time and effort to host an event, or get an organized PvP group going, or decides to host a raid, it is our duty as fellow guild members to support that individual and participate as much as possible in the events. If you're a badass PvP chick, that's great, but learn how to hold up your end in PvE in case you randomly need to fill in. This not only leads to more fun for us, but it also makes us a closer-knit guild. When you draw the boundary in your mind between "Us" and "Them", your entire guild, and indeed, your allies as well, should be included in "Us". Anybody with any significant length of experience with guilds knows that the people don't do this naturally--it has be a conscious decision. By choosing to be in WID, you are making that decision, and you are making it with the knowledge that some individuals will disappoint you. You're choosing this path because the collective positives outweigh the individual negatives. The negatives will exist. They're the price of admission, and you're choosing to pay it, so don't bitch. If you have to bitch, do it to an officer in private. They're the only ones that can actually do something about it if it reaches that level. Pissing in /g only weakens community spirit for no reason other than to make yourself feel better.

    Recruitment:

WID values slow growth. Too many people too fast will shock a guild culture, promote the formation of cliques, and lead to old-guard/new-guard situations. No guild ever stays the same, and there is never any way to return to the "glory days" of bygone times, so nobody should ever seek to walk through the same river twice. Nevertheless, it is possible and desirable to keep the community's identity from fracturing into cliques as individual people come and go. Slow acquisition of new members allows them to fully integrate with the guild. Three vouches for each new recruit shows us that the new recruit means business, and ensures that everybody joins with at least three new friends. One vouch per member, per month, entered in the recruit's forum thread, makes people be careful with their vouches, keeps the speed of growth down, and promotes wider circulation of recruits throughout the guild during their process of looking for vouches. Generally speaking, we want people to come and stay.

    Duties of Guild Leaders:

    Activity.
Guild leaders ought to actively lead their guilds, regularly interacting with their officers and guildies to build a community that enhances the play experience for the guild as a whole. The same basic duty plays out on a larger scale in any guild alliances, regularly interacting with other guild leaders and officers to actively build the larger community as well. Guild Leaders unable to discharge this duty have an obligation to step down, either temporarily or permanently.

    Inspiration.
Guild leaders should not just be active in their leadership, but should also be decisive. Obviously this doesn't mean ignoring the officer corps or general membership, but once a vision for the guild's next step has been identified, it is the responsibility of the Guild Leader to recruit believers and make it a reality. By that same token, if an initiative does not appear to be working, it is the Guild Leader's responsibility to abort mission, spearhead the reassessment process, and carry the standard for the new direction.

    Grenade-Jumping.
If something unpleasant has to be done, like kicking somebody, suspending an officer, or stripping them of rank completely, it's the Guild Leader's job to take one for the team. If such necessary evils (THEY ARE NECESSARY. THIS WILL HAPPEN. IT'S NOT PERSONAL. IT MIGHT NOT BE PERMANENT.) incite such personal animosity towards the Guild Leader that the happier aspects of the job become at all harder to fulfill, then it is the responsibility of the Guild Leader to step down and let somebody with a greater current stock of political capital take the reins and steer the community back towards happier times.

Duties of Officers (and Guild Leaders):

    Activity.
If an officer isn't around and in circulation with the entire guild, or at least a significant number of people beyond their own raid/arena team/instance team, then they're not serving their community, and should step down at least until such time as they can resume their duties. Not all officers are on at the exact same time. This is a good thing, since it means better coverage for the guild. It also means, however, that forums are an unavoidable and vitally important part of officering. Use them regularly, even if you hate them. They're not optional.

    Conflict Resolution.
Helping people resolve conflicts and keep dramaz to a minimum is one of the shittier aspects of Officer duties. It's also an unavoidable consequence of holding a position of authority and responsibility. As such, ideally every officer should be skilled at conflict resolution. If for whatever reason an officer isn't (After the dust settles, how satisfied is everybody?), then he or she has a duty to consult the rest of the officer corps and work on improving these skills as much as possible.

    Deliberative Virtue.
Logic is awesome. Not everybody has to be attending Law School night classes, but things like being able to separate messenger from message, or understanding the concept of a straw man argument, are really helpful for getting things done. You have to at least understand that there are ways of thinking and discussing things that are more constructive than others, and you have to be open to and value learning a little about and employing those ways.

    Kool-Aid Drinking.
Officers need to buy in to the guild vision and guild culture. They need to wave the flag, beat the drum, and get people excited by example. If they can't or aren't doing this, they need to make recommendations for changing the current vision or step down.

    Event Planning.
Each officer should plan, adequately publicize, and run a guild event once a month, regardless of whether it's a game event like a WSG throwdown with a rival guild, a service event like Deadmines escorts and run-throughs for Dark Iron in general, or an entertainment event like a naked gnome race.

    Leadership Selection and Term Limits:

    Guild Leader.
Each Guild Leader should normally figure on a six-month to 1-year term. He or she can step down at any point within that window, but must have completed the selection and elevation of his or her successor before a year is up. Guild Leaders can be removed from office at any time by a simple majority of officers. Guild Leaders should provide a clear focus for the guild before their term and should expect to have the guild's and officers' support in meeting the guild's agenda.

    Officers.
Once a month, the Guild Leader selects an officer and removes them from office, circulating them back into the general membership. They lose /o and forum access, and are intended to focus on reacquainting themselves with being on the outside, not always knowing what's going on, and just playing the game. The idea is to mandate sabbaticals, prevent burnout, and prevent complacency in the officer corps. Such an officer cannot be reelected for a period of two months. Volunteering for removal from office must be done in a private discussion with the Guild Leader. Officer candidates are nominated and voted on by the officer corps, by individual elimination runoff election until a nominee obtains a simple majority, and are added only one at a time, usually once a month during normal turnover, and no faster than twice a month. The Guild Leader can veto officer selections. Officers cannot serve more than a year without a hiatus. Officers should receive temporary suspensions of status and privilege as penance for misdeeds; this should be a normal, dues-paying kind of thing with very little stigma attached to it.

    Policies.
Each Guild Leader can determine his or her own way of setting major and minor policy, whether by executive privilege, advisory votes from the officers, or votes from the general membership. Officers who feel that a guild leader's policy paradigm is detrimental to the guild are vigorously encouraged to call for votes of No Confidence or removal from office, provided that such challenges are confined to /O.

    Exceptions:
A Guild Leader can make exceptions as much as he or she likes, but must answer for them to the officer corps afterward. The universal opinion of the active officer corps can also suspend any rule.

    Amendment:
A Guild Leader with the support of 2/3 of the Officer Corps can amend this charter.

Well, it's not the guild itself, it's a charter, for a guild, which we could call a... Gaming Team-Building Years-And-Fucking-Years, but apparently one that is not for you, which is fine. The actual guild itself is a lot more fun, we think at least partially because all the srs bsns has been taken care of up front.

Again, the application process is something of an ordeal, and this is not an accident. We wish you a Delicious gaming experience.

Yeah, we don't do guild recruitment here.

And since you'll ask about the other guild threads: those are by forumers, for forumers. PAA is a completely separate entity.

    See also: rules.
