Writing Applications

So, I'm looking for a writing application that is

A: Free
and
B: Not OpenOffice.org

Unless it's just because I'm using an outdated version, OpenOffice is too slow for me. It's way less smooth than Word used to be the last time I was using it on this computer.

So does anyone have a suggestion, or should I try upgrading OpenOffice and hope that newer releases are better?

Google docs is awesome. I've written 25 pages of fiction using it (all at work, muahahaha).

I will second this. Abiword is everything that OpenOffice (or MS Word) is not: trim, light, and fast. It doesn't have a whole fuckton of features, but it's good at what it does.

Can it save to MS word formats?

    Yes.

It can also save to OpenDocument, if you need it to, but it's native format is something else.

It can't output directly to PDF like OOo can. You'll need something else to do that for you.

I third Google Docs. Seriously, it's just one of those things that you don't take seriously until you try it. It's a damn capable word processor, and awesome because it saves in and accepts all the formats, and as well, keeps your documents online so that you can access them from anywhere.

edit: Oh, and since we're talking about formats, it can do Oo, Word, HTML, odt, wordperfect, staroffice, and indeed, PDFs. So in format options, yeah, google docs is the total win.

i used Google Docs when working on my CV and stuff, which made it unspeakably easy to get other peoples' opinions and input on it. Just add them to it, and they can browse and make any edits/suggestions. I was sold.
