Vietnam is the $10 ($15?) expansion that includes new maps and guns
Wel, new everything. It reskins everything so it's basically BF: V in the BC 2 engine. Hope they do more of this too. I know we had BF 1943, but I don't know why they didn't just do that as BC 2 DLC.

Eh, the majority of servers I find populated are single map servers, so I personally don't see the appeal of just more maps. Because I won't actually get to play them. Things like the Vietnam expansion, I'll definitely get to play.

Remember how EA/DICE were bagging on Activision/IW on Modern Warfare 2, where the latter was charging $15 for five maps and how BC2's new maps are going to be free? And then they just released the same maps the game came with but like woah it's a new game mode or holy crap it's daytime now? And we're supposed to be super impressed by their generosity?
Yeah, not really feeling Vietnam either. The BC1 maps might be fun, though. Even though they're old goddamn maps ported over.

Yeah man, it's almost exactly the same thing when a company charges 15$ for five maps and another company releases them for free. Damn them and their free stuff!
If you cannot see the difference between the two actions, then I have no idea what to tell you.

He's not saying it's the same. He's saying the "new" battlefield maps aren't new maps at all, they're just slightly modded versions of the existing maps. We've had maybe one or two entirely new maps?
I was gonna post a link to a google search that proves that it's been pretty well pirated but that's pushing on the edge of a rules violation, so.. yeah.. but.. there you go.

Well I should have just mentioned that what allowed Joe the Pirate to play BF2/142 was the dedicated server support. In BC2 however, the server software hasn't been released to the public. Sure people are playing BC2 singleplayer for free, but COME ON. Multiplayer is where it's at (tm).
I imagine the release of a sdk for map making would include some sort of server hosting for testing, which would be modified to allow multiplayer piracy.
I think proyebat is talking about the capability to build total conversion mods, in which the scripting and assets can be completely different, just using the the same renderer and base modules?
I think BF2 scripts were in python, which is straight up readable. Therefore, servers can change the script that checks for authentic cd-key to always return true, letting anyone play.
Uh, no. Not at all. The map maker would include nothing of the sort.
While it's certainly possible to release an SDK that contains no player hosting capability, it does make for a less than ideal method to test and vet new maps/mods. Obviously you can pay for a server and load a map/mod onto it if the game allows it, but that'd be your only option for doing multiplayer testing.
Like it or lump it, having no publicly-available server does cut down on piracy (at least in the short term).

Doesn't the CD check occur when you sign in? If not, why not?

Maybe the client is cracked to just gives itself the ok ? catch the from-server authentication packet's IP address, port number and datagram, feed to connection requests directed there
It's very hard to do it like that I think, the client has to verify with the EA/whoever server to play multiplayer which means the opposite has to happen as well.
Eh this is probably getting too close to disallowed chat
It would work roughly the same way the ubisoft DRM Of Death was cracked, by figuring out what sort of data the game expects from the server, and spoofing it.
Stripping features out of the game to prevent piracy only prevents it to the extent people won't want to play it. But that's getting into the philosophical debate.
Damn I wish there were maptools. Of course the fact it's a pretty quick and dirty console port probably made maptools impossible to be workable.
If I understand it right, the engine is designed to make streamlined packages for the console, by packing the data as tightly as possible. They didn't plan well and ended up packing it in such a way that it's a total pain in the ass to unpack and modify.
The whole huge patch thing and the massive delay were part of that if I recall. Like.. they couldn't get the packages to verify right and they had huge patches because moving things around on the map required resending the whole map and all that.
So yeah, map tools would be basically impossible with the engine in its current state. Not that it's impossible to make map tools for console games (Skate 3, Halo 3 and Reach for example, all have map editing of some sort, even if fairly limited), just that they designed their engine in a silly fashion that makes it so it pretty much won't work.

DICE made a post on their blog about how they "cook" (which I guess is what they call post-processing) the game files, so people wouldn't get HEUG loading times whenever people dick around with video settings. You all remember that, right?
That whole "cooking" system couldn't be modified to work like diff patches.

And yes, I would love to see some mod tools. I fondly remember Desert Combat.
uhhhhhhhhhhh
what? I'm not sure that you understand how mod tools work

Forgot about that. Server name is Penny Arcade Public Server.
Or for that matter, how piracy works. BC2 hasn't been pirated? What?

Now that's how you do it!
What's the name of it again?
Edit: Oh, it's in the OP.
Weird, I can't find it in the server browser. All filters off, set to all maps, all game modes, all regions. It should show up when I search for it.
Edit: Found it the hard way. Got all servers, went through alphabetically. Thanks a bunch for not putting any weird symbols in front of the name.

I can make this, but might get home about a half hour later.
