So I logged in and tried to play this earlier after dumping like 70 hours into Oblivion. It felt like the gravity was turned up. I remember having the same issue after playing Fallout 3. Physics transition is eeeeeeeeee.
I finally had a bit of fun playing the egineer tonight, I got a level 3 sentry in a great position and danced many a merry jig on it as it blew and ripped apart enemies. Probably made a great deathcam shot for the victim, heh.
Can someone give me some 'golden rules' to follow to playing a good engineer? For simplicites sake, lets just say the team has one engineer.

golden rule number 1. rightclick to turn your fucking teleporter around so people dont pop in facing walls/corners.

I know the basics like that, and focusing efforts on other engie buildings instead of your own if needs be, im just wondering how most of you decide what stuff to put down and where.
I've played Engie loads, but can never really seem to be that effective.

There's no solid rule on that, because once enough people plop something somewhere, it creates a time/space anomaly that invariably draws Demos/Soldiers/Spies.
Just plop things where you think they'll do enough good. eventually you'll learn

Guess you are right. To be honest I did a lot better as an engie today than I usually do, but that's not saying too much :P
It's just engie is the complete opposite of my usual playstle, it's incredibly hard for me to get a feel for where I should be dropping stuff.
Based on what I've seen on pubs the last few days, here are my engy tips:
1) Teleporters are not optional. You have to build them. Then, you have to upgrade them.
2) Dispenser? Not optional. Every member of your team needs a dispenser at some point. Build it. And build it in a decent spot.
3) Gun. You know what? I'll settle for the first two things being built. Do whatever you want with your sentry, I don't give a shit, just make sure the teleporter is working and a dispenser is available.
Seriously, the last two days, I've played at times where there are three or four engineers on the team, and the only engy with a teleporter up is me. There might be another dispenser up, if the team is lucky. They just don't build them. Its the new way to grief or something.
I imagine more weapon packs with themes, lots more hats, lots more tweaks, game modes, maps, everything.
TF2 is pretty damn popular. They aren't just going to be all "kay guys, that's the last update, cya later bros." Even with the cheap ass prices, they are making money off it. I mean they JUST released it for mac. It'd be a pretty dick move to pull the plug on updating after advertising it that much.
Counter-Strike was way more popular, and it's been years since they've gotten a new map or character model.
Right now, however, TF2 is basically Valve's testbed for ideas and stuff, so it'll probably keep getting updated because of that.

I shall show you the new ways of Sniper, I shall write them upon your flesh.
With boolits.
Then I shall continue my reign as the most despised, reviled sniper on the servers.

Ambushing involves putting a temporary sentry in an unusual place and hoping to pick off a few unsuspecting players with it.
Turtling is putting your sentry in one of the prime sentry positions and building a base.
Then there's putting on a Texas Ten Gallon and hunting down scouts with your pistol and constantly taunting
That's the manliest engie style

- Treating the sentry like another player, by dropping it down in strange places and running out with your shotgun/pistol, luring enemies back to it
- Not caring if it blows up, just quickly build a new one in another strange/blind spot
- Only upgrading when it's not safe to advance any further
- Following the team and placing a sentry just slightly behind them to help with assists as you join in the fight with your shotty
There is a decent amount of us on right now. Unless the server is going to die.
edit: And actually I'm done too, so it might be...
