trying to remember an old mechwarrior style PC game. around '96. the thing that sticks out most is that you got new mechs by researching a chassis. what's more you could also research airplane chassis which you could use. any ideas?

Was it a mech style game? Or a mech strategy game? The latter would be Metal Fatigue. Dunno if it's a normal mech game.

Put another vote for Earthsiege 2.

Fun game, but it kinda sucks that you couldn't use the mouse to aim though.

Not really. In Starsiege, your weapons could pivot independent of the mech's torso, and were aimed with the mouse.

Mouse aiming was the way to go in Mechwarrior 3, too, what with the floating reticle (plus removal of joystick throttle support in Pirate's Moon), and a lot of MW4 players go M+KB, too.

I want to say that joystick is generally the way to go for mecha games, but I'm always amazed by how many people come out of the woodwork to say that they play space action games (X-Wing, Wing Commander, etc.) with a mouse and keyboard. If anything, I'd have to say that the space games ought to be harder than mecha games played that way.

EDIT: Oh yeah, another vote for Earthsiege 2. The research and the aircraft (Razor) definitely sound like it.

Well, from my extensive Space Sim experience, sure you can play Wing commander games with a mouse, but you will definitely play a lot better with a joystick.

And mech games are actually easier to play with mice, given that they usually have torso twisting or independent weapon aiming.

Another Heavy Gear fan here aswell. I used to own both games but I lost them when my mothers basement flooded a couple of years ago. I really liked the FMV's of the first HG but the gameplay did improve vastly in the second one although I missed HG:s incredible detail you had in customizing your Gear.

The Precision Pro is a joystick that handles the torso-twist thing without any difficulty or extra peripherals (rudder pedals). Although I generally use the rudder to steer and the regular X Y axis for aiming the torso.

    Battledrome = cars, right?

I played Tie Fighter with a mouse. My wrists, they still hurt. In order to change direction you had to keep moving your mouse until you reached the desired heading -- you couldn't just point the cursor in a direction and then reset to center to stop turning.

I can't believe how dedicated I was. Oh, to be 14 again.

they actually in later versions made it so you can't play with the mouse i think. but i remember that, if the enemy was directly behind you you'd pull the mouse towards you, pick it up, put it forward and pull again. it was like you were trying to shave your mouse pad.

It's only an issue insofar as the aforementioned Tie Fighter "shaving the mousepad" control scheme, far as I'm concerned.

    Very apt, that. Very.

So, uh, Heavy Gear 2 for free or what, folks? can anyone confirm?

I made it through the Interceptor tube training using a mouse. Then I bought a joystick. I can't imagine trying to play the whole game like that.

So, to the OP, any of these games fit your bill?

Heathen. You're not getting the full mech/space/flight simulator experience if you don't use a joystick.

You do realize, you'll be wholly unqualified to pilot a mech or spacecraft when they become popular and everyone has one, right?

God damn I loved the premise of that game. I also loved how deadly the FPS portion was. It was the first game I can remember playing where just running down a hallway shooting was suicidal.

I am also saddened that there was never an Earthsiege 3. The second one was a blast and the flying chasis was a really nice change of pace. I'd kill for a modern day sequel Although actually I'd be happy with almost any new Mech game for PC.

I used to be one of them, at the very least I started playing descent 2,3 and freespace 2 with a mouse and keyboard. About the 5th mission of freespace2 I went out and bought an F-16 base joystick and then played freespace2 all the way through from the start again with everything full mapped and had the most fun I've ever had playing a space game.
Mech 3 I had to play with keyboard and mouse, I found it easier to target, but 2 I played with a two button joystick before I got the F-16.

Also, this entire thread is depressing because I can't remember the last mech/space game that wasn't an Elite ripoff that isn't starlancer or mech 4. Where's my upcoming mech5 microsoft you fucks. :(
