I live in Fort Worth, Texas, and I currently get my electricity through Green Mountain Energy. I'm paying an outrageous 15-16 cents/kWh, and I'm thinking of switching companies. I have some questions about doing so in a deregulated market like Texas.
1) Do I need to be careful switching companies to make sure my electricity doesn't get turned off? Overlap the services for a few days or something? Will I get double charged?
2) Are there any companies I should look at or stay away from in particular?
3) Will I actually get rates anywhere near what's on the Electricity Facts Labels?
4) Can I really be sure I'm getting (or really, paying for) 100% renewable energy like they say, when these companies don't generate the electricity in the first place?
Anything else I should know or consider would be much appreciated too.
I'm using Kinetic which I'm quite liking. They offer cheap 100% renewable, even on the TNMP grid.
Edit: I know I didn't answer most of the questions you asked. I answered what I could, though. I've wondered as well how honest they are about the 100% renewable claims.
Thanks for the replies. PowertoChoose.org was quite helpful.
I ended up going with Kinetic, even before TrillionGrams' post. They look good based on consistently low complaint rates, a renewable option, and right now they have a promotion going on where you can get their renewable options at the normal rate.
I also looked into the whole "am I really paying for renewable energy generation" question, and it looks like all the companies basically buy Renewable Energy Credits to offset your usage. At that point it's up to regulators to make sure the people who own the windmills or what have you aren't selling more RECs than electricity they put on the grid.

It will list all the providers in your area based on kilowatt charge. Its usually a good idea to overlap the service for a couple of days.
I am using Startex and its been phenomenal, for what its worth.
