    Saint Row 2 (regret this)

    Why?

Probably performance issues. SR2 is notorious for having a terrible PC port. I still managed to have some fun with the game and beat it, but I had to basically turn everything down until SR2 looked like GTA: San Andreas (flat textures, no shadows, lighting, smoke, blur, or particle effects) before I could get it to run decently.

    Chrome / Specforce: $1.99
    Defense Grid: $4.99
    Ghost Hunters: $0.95
    Thief 3: $2.99
    Killing Floor: $3.74

So, a bunch of games for under 15 bucks. Was tempted to double that with Bioshock 2 today but I can hold out for it being $5 at Christmas.

Nah, Christmas on Steam this year is going to be redonkulous. They seem intent on continually outdoing themselves... a pattern is emerging.

I just started up Necrovision about one minute ago, and already I have a feeling this is gonna' be good.
The fucking name splash video - no gameplay, no story explanation, just the name appearing in a fancy way - was backed up by the Jimmy Hart version of O Fortuna.
I can see where this is a'headed, and I am likin' what I see. :D

Alright, silly question time, how does Borderlands run? Nice and efficient? I've got a Core 2 Duo T5900 2.2GHz, Radeon HD3450 256MB and 3GB RAM.

(Edit: I can't rely on Can You Run It; it always vastly overestimates my very modest graphics card, for some reason.)
I've found the quotes about comparing to TF2, L4D and UT3. I'm the guy without TF2 (yeah, yeah, I know), but L4D runs very nicely on my lappy; not maxed but not too far off. UT3, however, ran like crap when I tried it on a free weekend.

I guess that's not promising, since BL uses UE3.

(Edit: decided to pass on it for now. Sorry, Gearbox, you should've made a demo for testing purposes.)

Had a chance to try Torchlight and it seems rather good! Glad I grabbed it. Wish they had a better deal on expansions though, wanted DoW II: Chaos Rising, but $20 was still more than I felt like for it.

    :P

Man, I can't wait for all the cool stuff that's going to come out in 2009! I just hope Valve keeps supporting Left 4 Dead like they promised.

The Painkiller/Serious Sam/Chrome/Necrovision/Twin Sector/Alpha Prime situation in this thread has made me realise a couple of things.

    1) A mediocre, or at least seriously unpolished or unsophisticated First Person Shooter is always going to be at least moderately fun to play, due to the immediacy and satisfaction derived from the mechanics. Despite the graphical focus, I also think that mouselook-based examples hold up better over time than most early-3D games do - I've played HL1, SiN, Shogo & Red Faction recently, and all (sort of) stand the test of time.

    2) Critics really need a way of distinguishing games that aren't remotely fun to play and are utterly dull or generic, and games that are in no way good but have some interesting ideas that are worth experiencing. Reviews are all scaled to the idea that you're paying the RRP for a game, but ignore the fact that the more rubbishy stuff will quickly end up a sixth or even a tenth of the price of your Call of Dutys.

Far too much money, but I'm happy with the discounts I received... though Warband could have been lower </grump> and I ended up getting Episodes on the regular discount, not the one-day (but that's my own fault for umming and ah-ing).

Some of it's just things I know are crap but am still interested in for one reason or another (Jericho for little more than a pound...? Yeah, okay), some I wasn't willing to pay full price for (Borderlands for one), some I've wanted for a while and the deals were just too good to pass up (King's Bounty, Men of War, GTA). If you enjoy city building, economic type games, ones in which you have to produce components to reach a final product, than Dawn of Discovery is a fantastic game. It combines that economic and trade aspect with a great city builder.
