[Culdcept Saga] -monopolize the magic on Feb 5th!

Zorak15Zorak15 Registered User regular
edited April 2008 in Games and Technology
Culdcept Saga is the latest game in the Culdcept series. The game is often simply described as a combination of Magic: The Gathering and Monopoly.
It is almost exactly that:

00170874.jpg

(my lengthy description follows)
In the game you are a "cepter", or an elite magic-card-carrying person. You roll dice and move around an enclosed board (often with multiple paths) with other cepters. There is even a sort of "GO" space called "the castle" that gives you a certain amount of magic when you land on it or pass it. You live or die based on the amount of "magic" that you have saved up (see: monopoly money).

You have a peronalized deck of cards from which you draw your hand. The cards that you play use up the magic you have accumulated. When you land on unoccupied territory, you can purchase it by casting and placing one of your creature cards as a squatter. Just like monopoly, having properties of the same color(element) nets you more money when people land on them. You can even spend magic to change the element of a property to suit your other land or the creature that lives on it.

If the space you land on is owned by another cepter you can either pay the toll or fight. To fight, you challenge the creature that occupies it by playing (casting/summoning) one of your own. If you win, your creature takes up residence on the territory. If you lose, your creature likely dies and you pay up anyway.
[/lengthy description]

I picked up the PS2 version on recommendation, probably from the fine folks on this board. It has been called the "top sleeper hit" of the PS2 generation by dubious and questionable sources, but I'm pretty sure that it actually kept sleeping. I consider it to be a little-known, timeless treasure, and one of the best PS2 games ever. The only thing missing from it is online play and publicity.

00170875.jpg

That's why I'm counting on Culdcept Saga. I want everyone to catch on and provide me hours of amusement via Xbox Live. Seriously, this could be my favorite game of all time if it's even close to the quality of the PS2 version, and it looks to be very much improved! It is bound for the Xbox 360, and is coming out some time between March and May, I think. . .

Google Translated Official Site: Culdcept Saga!

This just in: Official Fact Sheet info!
The merging of board game and trading card game brings a unique and engrossing gameplay experience to the Xbox 360 in Culdcept Saga.

Join the journey of two friends who battle together to fight enemies and bring peace back to their country. Your objective is to collect skills, the currency of choice in the Culdcept world, conquering land as you defeat other players. The collection of cards in your book is your weapon. How you use them depends on your objective – your game, it’s your choice.

* Unlimited number of strategic combinations: From over 470 cards, you choose those that will become your “book.” – The strategies you can employ are endless – there is no “ultimate” card, the impact of the move depends on the combination of cards used!
* Developed for the X360: Developed for the next generation platform, Culdcept Saga delivers realistic characters and environments. Monsters emerge to life from the cards as they are placed on the map.
* Play alone, play with friends: The single player mode allows you to build your card collection, testing out a variety of strategies on how to combine them for maximum points. The multiplayer mode against 3 other players on Xbox Live gives you the opportunity to battle out your extensive card collection against theirs, complete with voice chat!
* Create your own look: As you clear various modes and purchase parts on Xbox Live Marketplace, you can adjust your character’s look. From a man to a woman, or to become a lizard man instead of human… it’s your character, you choose the look.
* Japan’s creative All Star team: By bringing in Japan’s top creative talents, the team brings the game to another level with rich detailed illustrations and card design, beautiful musical scoring and a captivating storyline.

The first one on the PS2 was good, but like you said, no online multiplayer.

However, I've heard that the Japanese 360 version is really buggy. Hopefully they fix it up before releasing it over here.

EDIT: Looks like from the translated site, that they are at least trying to address the problems.

Yeah. I actually read the "INFO" and "FAQ" tabs and the developers seemed to be tripping over themselves to apologize and correct the issue. Some great engrish resulted from the translation, though! :D

". . .we verified the trouble which includes advance stop.

Very much putting annoyance on Sawayama's customer, we apologize deeply.

So far, it was the circumstance which the goal of details of formal title update easily not be in sight, announce cannot. The large quantity it received also the communication which is giving an advise and scolding. Making everyone insecure, there is no either word which you apologize."

    edit: saw your edit.

    edit: even better stuff: :o

If you are interested after having read my description, I can recommend it to you without hesitation. It's an awesome game, and I've never even had the joy of playing against a human opponent.

edit: it can sometimes be a little tough when you get ganged up on by the cpu (2 or 3 on 1 sometimes, but sometimes you get a partner), but I think the difficulty actually made it a bit better in the end.

I will be buying the new 360 game the day it arrives, without a doubt. Loved the PS2 game. Simple but strategically deep gameplay mixed with sheer Japanese weirdness.

This is the one game that makes me truly regret not having a 360, I got the ps2 game a year or two ago and out of my 30+ ps2 games, it's gotten the most mileage, more impressive considering I spent 9 dollars on it.

Fantastic game on PS2, cannot wait for the 360 version to come out. I've never played anyone multiplayer before but would love to.

The original Culdcept on PS2 is the most underrated game on the system, and it's only about 5 bucks in used game shops now - I highly encourage those that haven't to try it out.

I might have said this in the last Culdcept Saga thread, but they really need to improve on their localization efforts this time around. There are a handful of cards in Culdcept that I can't understand, and a couple that don't do what they say they do at all.

That said, I'd probably buy this game anyway. Culdcept was so awesome, I just finally finished getting the medals after logging 3148571 or so hours.

edit: Also, it'd be nice if they chose one: either not make your opponents' hands visible at all, or make them all public knowledge that you can view at any time. One of the most frustrating parts of Culdcept for me was having to recognize cards in my opponents' hands during the ~3 seconds that they are shown so I know which items to use in battle (or avoid battle altogether.)

Gamespot says 5/9. Ebgames says 5/1. IGN says Q1 but lists 3/30 on their wishlist. MSN says 5/1. Gamespy says Q1. Gamerankings says May.

Seems that May is most likely, but I can still hope for late March or early April!

This is just another reason I'll be getting a 360 come summer, even though I'm sure there will be far too small and hardcore an audience for this. I like to think it will fill the strategic/collection whoring gap left behind in my heart from Phantom Dust. Maybe I can woo some of my foolhearty students away from YuGiOh and Pokemon for two seconds to play a real MANS FANTASY CARD GAME for a change.

Whoa. That's a bunch of bugs.

They have already released one update/fix and have another planned for February apparently. Hopefully the US Microsoft won't let this out until then, and they had better assure us that they fixed it all.

the character designs in this game are goddam gorgeous, done by the little known, but incredibly talented shishizaru.

the monsters on the cards are only mediocre, but goddam, the characters are fantastic.

It seems like it would be a complete pain in the ass keeping track of what monsters are where, the varying power levels of each one, which spaces are which elements (especially once they start changing) etc.

ANd I think what they mean by "get bits from the game and marketplace" is that you can get costumes and stuff that are unlocked IN THE GAME but in the future they will release new stuff that you can buy on the marketplace. Just like Bomberman does it.

I bought a 360 just for this game. No lie. I've been putting off buying a 360 ever since I saw and desperately wanted Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Gears, Carcassone, and Settlers... and then this game hits, and I could not hold back the tide any longer. I won an Elite on eBay, and it should be here in the next few days. The very first thing I will do is download and play the S#!^ out of Culdcept, and when I'm done with that, I'll be playing Settlers and Carcassone.

It's been said over and over in this thread, but the PS2 Culdcept was phenomenal, and my little Sony fanboy heart broke when I heard that the sequel was 360 exclusive. Tears.

You might be able to purchase additional stuff from the marketplace, but there are customization options you unlock through playing without purchasing them, too. Though to be honest, if there are items for purchase from the game on the Japanese marketplace, I haven't seen em listed during the times I've poked through it, and the game has been out well over a year now.

I wouldn't worry too much. If you look back over the release history of this game in Japan, it's been whored out all over the damned place. I wouldn't be surprised if it hit the PS3 eventually, and it will be hitting the DS sometime soon. Now whether any of those versions make it here or not is a completely different story.
