Video game concepts that might be useful in the real world

I don't mean junk like, I wish I had infinite ammo and my car never ran out of gas, ho ho.

Is there anything we create or simulate in games that might make good sense to develop or incorporate into real life, if such a thing is possible?

I was thinking about this after playing GTA4 quite a bit this weekend. I realized that the third person overhead view made it much easier to navigate than in first person within the game. This is true for many other games besides GTA, though GTA makes a good test case because of the way it attempts to model a semi-realistic world.

Is the third person view only helpful due to the way the game is designed, or would it have similar benefits in real life? I'd like to do a test drive with a camera mounted on a long arm, having that view in addition to our normal first person view.

Ok, so it might take some getting used to.

Another example would be HUDs in general, although as I recall there has been some research that indicates HUDs can be more distracting than helpful?

Is there anything in games that can be or has been incorporated into real life?

Everything in Trauma Center is incredibly useful, specially if you're studying medicine.

    (will make serious post later)

Double-jumping would be nice to have, as well as control of your motion while you're in the air.

Portal gun. Would probably change society as we know it.

A quest log would be nice.

Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position
Such a heavy burden now to be the one
Born to bare and read to all the details of our ending
To write it down for all the world to see
    But I forgot my pen...

The US military has been interested in RTS-style command and control system fro some time now. Things like FBCB2 are used to allow vehicles to report status to a commander, and to allow the vehicles and commanders to visualize their positions relative to the map and each other.

Augmented reality, i.e. we could actually have all the HUD stuff they have in games (outside you know, 'health').

Wasn't that just an overlay in the helmet, attached to a camera, with a load of information stuck onto it. That's not too far off I would imagine?

    Relevant article.

(this is what happens when the kids growing up on anime and MGS hit the military defense complex, who knew Otacon would ever be an accurate character study)

It would have a huge range of applications to the civilian world as well. Think of things such as minimaps, we've got those now for i-phones, and they're amazingly useful.

Yeah, this is a pretty cool idea. One thing I wonder about is how it actually works, if there's something in the display that counteracts the problem of focusing on things that are too near. I suppose it could do it similar to a Viewmaster or 3D glasses, and show overlays offset just enough that the information appears to be floating in midair.

I think the best thing about augmented reality is all you need are special color/shape combinations. I bet specialized programs could make some really awesome multilayered artwork with it.

You'd get used to focusing beyond the HUD the way you learn to focus on specific objects or sounds even in a wave of noise.

THIS. I've also learned to "hit the apex" thanks to Ridge Racer, Gran Turismo, Forza, etc etc.

Also. Aim for the head during a zombieocalypse.
