I also kind of expected a thread about Internet Privacy to pop up on G&T, D&D, or SE about this.

Let's say in an ideal world everyone has their facebook/myspace page locked down tight. You can still be found because facebook/myspace are not the only sites out there that collect personal data. So long as they have your name they have a place to start digging.

There's public records with all sorts of personal information available offline as well as online and there are people who do this sort of thing for a living. People that can be hired as long as someone has the money to pay them.

You don't need to know how to find someone....you just need the money to pay someone who does. And they can and will find you with just a name and some basic info to go on....sometimes less.

Isn't this life, though? When I go to the grocery store, there's a chance someone could follow me home or jot down my license plate or steal my wallet or whatever.

And despite that, I still go to the grocery store. I still chat with strangers. Because the real world is generally a pretty decent place, and I think a lot of that is because people are accountable for their actions in the real world.

Frankly, I kinda like what Blizzard is doing with their forums. Sure, there's risks, but I also think there's a good chance it'd make the forums a more decent place. And just like in the real world, I'm ok with those incredibly remote risks if it means there's more decency around. That's why I'm ok with leaving my house every day.

These forums are a pretty decent place. Must be because we're forced to post with our real names and not because of, say, proper moderation.

These forums are an exception, not the rule (and even then, no offense to anyone here, even these forums are not as decent as a typical real-world discussion).

I'm not sure I remember the last time someone said they would hate rape someones sister at the office cooler. Even in jest.

That wasn't me. That was the other bowen. I'm just saying.

I see what you did there.

Really though it is your responsability to keep the information you knowingly choose to post online protected. You can disagree with me all you want but that doesn't make it any less your responsability.

It makes for pretty embarassing reading, actually, which is often the case when the MSM takes notice of us on the intertronwebs because the reporters have no idea what they are talking about.

Although there would inevitably be cases of e-stalking, harassment, and possibly physical violence I think the thing to be more concerned about would be identity theft.

You have a company with a large number of accounts that already has problems with account security. True, no one's CC numbers have been stolen(yet) but their customer info is already being targeted.

Now they're choosing to make more of that information public.

In light of that I want to know what steps Blizzard is taking to secure personal and account information from potential identify theft because frankly, choosing to reveal my personal information because I do business with their company is not at all reassuring.

I've said before that I wish I had the Super power to E-Punch people in the nose. That is, the ability to Punch through my monitor and have my fist come out of their monitor smashing them square in the face.

Blizzard is giving me this ability, but in typical blizzard fashion they have nerfed it from it's original concept.
