I don't have to make your life hell to get to you, I can harass the people around you to get to you. You may not care that your actual name is being posted on a popular gaming forum, but your boss will when you mysteriously order 200 pizzas for the "company party," and put both of your names on the bill.
Just to clarify, I would never do this. I'm waaaay too lazy.
Heh, for every 1 person pissed, there are 10 people that are thrilled about being able to link their facebook to their WoW account.
I could probably get my girlfriend and mom into WoW if I told them they could talk to people on facebook while playing.
I lay awake at night trying to keep myself occupied with my own thoughts as my girlfriend tells me about all the stuff about our friends that she read about (without actually talking to them) on facebook during the day.
I wish someone would have a pizza delivered under my name. I mean it's not like I paid for it and if you really ordered 200 pizzas you would have to pay for them up front so I would have to thank you for the free pizza!

Who says I would pay for the things I order? If a person is that motivated, I'm sure they can find cc frauds to order the pizzas.

Even then it's still free for me, right? Unless you are also saying you are going to steal my CC info and then buy 200 pizzas. In which case that's taking it to a whole new level.

It's not about being free, it's about harrassment. I'm sure your bosses will get tired of having some anonymous jerk constantly harass their establishment because of you.
But hey, the good news is, you get 200 free pizzas.

i think you are missing the point of the pizza joke, its not to treat a company to pizza everyday, if that happened i would just accept it as a way of life, its about having a pizza show up they didn't want that they also have to pay for, thats the annoying part
that said i am also down with someone ordering me pizzas and paying for it for a few weeks, i work with 4 people in my office and that would be awesome
Let's say in an ideal world everyone has their facebook/myspace page locked down tight. You can still be found because facebook/myspace are not the only sites out there that collect personal data. So long as they have your name they have a place to start digging.
There's public records with all sorts of personal information available offline as well as online and there are people who do this sort of thing for a living. People that can be hired as long as someone has the money to pay them.
You don't need to know how to find someone....you just need the money to pay someone who does. And they can and will find you with just a name and some basic info to go on....sometimes less.
Isn't this life, though? When I go to the grocery store, there's a chance someone could follow me home or jot down my license plate or steal my wallet or whatever.
And despite that, I still go to the grocery store. I still chat with strangers. Because the real world is generally a pretty decent place, and I think a lot of that is because people are accountable for their actions in the real world.
Frankly, I kinda like what Blizzard is doing with their forums. Sure, there's risks, but I also think there's a good chance it'd make the forums a more decent place. And just like in the real world, I'm ok with those incredibly remote risks if it means there's more decency around. That's why I'm ok with leaving my house every day.
These forums are a pretty decent place. Must be because we're forced to post with our real names and not because of, say, proper moderation.
That, and the user base difference. Not taking anything away from PA but I am pretty sure Blizzards daily post count blows PA out of the water.
To be fair, Bliz gets paid to operate those forums, and every single poster [in the English board] is paying them at least $15/month. They should be able to pay for a proper moderation team, not the paltry 12 people.
Penny-Arcade forums are much smaller, but have more mods and there is no revenue commitment from the posters to the site.
Bliz could have cleared up the moderation issue with a much more robust MVP system. Give them real moderation abilities and a report system to keep them in check, rather than the worthless green sycophant thing they have implemented today. Having only 12 real mods for the entire multi-million North American playerbase is just impossible resource management.

I don't think you get the point of harrassment. Whether the pizza is being paid for or not isn't really relevant, it's getting your work place and bosses involved because of something menial.

At my work it would not happen since I work in a place that has several government regulated security programs in place. So the pizza guy would basically get to the outside of the front door and if no one can verify him he goes back to his car. We have to notify our front desk when we order food so we don't even know the food is here until after the delivery takes place. If the front desk doesn't know then my boss certainly would never find out. I can see how at a retail place or something a little less restrictive it could work.
If the pizza guy said he was delivering pizza for guyX who works for guyY, especially at a government place, I imagine you'd be searched rectally like a brown guy trying to get on a plane.

Congratulations, you work at a place with great security. I'm sure the security team will notify you and your boss of constant deliveries meant for you and him. Your boss is probably a great guy, so he'll ignore the ongoing harassment to the business, because someone is trying to get at you.
I think the point is if you have enough info to send a pizza to someones workplace there are plenty of other things you can do to, like call constantly, write threatening letters, etc.
People who aren't concerned about harassment as a result of this are probably
1) Men, and
2) Not aware of how easy it is to obtain a lot of personal data about someone using freely available resources (we've just had an example of this posted in the thread, so I'm not sure how you miss it, but still.)

Man, I would love to see a transcript of all the inter-company messages going back and forth at Activision-Blizzard over the last 72 hours. I imagine it would be hilarious the further on you read.

The "pizza" analogy is a simple example of harassing people by proxy. People don't have to target you to make your life hell.

My boss is a lady and our front desk would end up calling the pizza place and say stop delivering or start calling to verify before delivering long before me or my boss would ever hear about it. At the end of the day it would be a huge waste of time for the guy ordering pizzas. Plus how many pizza shops are going to take a massive deliver request multiple times in a row? So are we now assuming my estalker is calling every pizza place in my area and ordering mass pizzas on a stolen credit card just to annoy me? Honestly I would be honored if anyone went to that level to try harass me at work.

i think signing someone up for hustler/playboy/playgirl? and having the subscription sent to their place of work would be a pretty good way to harass someone by proxy

Hell if I wanted to harass somebody seriously, I'd go to any number of free internet access places (coffee shop, whatever), find one of those free internet fax services, and fax him a picture of an 8 year old with the caption of "Hey X, this is Mary and she said she'd like to meet you - the usual time and place okay?". If I was super paranoid I'd bounce it off a couple proxies in Iran or wherever first.
It's not like it's even remotely difficult to seriously fuck people's lives up anonymously if you have perceived cause to do so, and a great many people have perceived cause. I mean...WoW is a game where a lot of the enjoyment is in beating other people at something. That will piss somebody off enough eventually.
Does the denial of using real names as troll reduction disprove John Gabriel's Greater Internet Dickwad theory, in which he states: A Person + Anonymity + An Audience = Total Dickwad? Taking anonymity away from the equation leaves only a person and an audience, and that usually doesn't create internet dickwads, especially if there are repercussions, such as your name being shown.

if i give you guys my name and say some inflammatory things will you order me a pizza to spite me
i might, but i will also most likely tell the delivery man you will give him $100 tip if he puts his junk all over said pizza.

The plan worked. The next day, we had a pizza arrive. The store manager ending up paying the tab. Ah, harassment.
