I don't have to make your life hell to get to you, I can harass the people around you to get to you. You may not care that your actual name is being posted on a popular gaming forum, but your boss will when you mysteriously order 200 pizzas for the "company party," and put both of your names on the bill.

Just to clarify, I would never do this. I'm waaaay too lazy.

    I doubt it.

Heh, for every 1 person pissed, there are 10 people that are thrilled about being able to link their facebook to their WoW account.

I could probably get my girlfriend and mom into WoW if I told them they could talk to people on facebook while playing.

I lay awake at night trying to keep myself occupied with my own thoughts as my girlfriend tells me about all the stuff about our friends that she read about (without actually talking to them) on facebook during the day.

Let's say in an ideal world everyone has their facebook/myspace page locked down tight. You can still be found because facebook/myspace are not the only sites out there that collect personal data. So long as they have your name they have a place to start digging.

There's public records with all sorts of personal information available offline as well as online and there are people who do this sort of thing for a living. People that can be hired as long as someone has the money to pay them.

You don't need to know how to find someone....you just need the money to pay someone who does. And they can and will find you with just a name and some basic info to go on....sometimes less.

Isn't this life, though? When I go to the grocery store, there's a chance someone could follow me home or jot down my license plate or steal my wallet or whatever.

And despite that, I still go to the grocery store. I still chat with strangers. Because the real world is generally a pretty decent place, and I think a lot of that is because people are accountable for their actions in the real world.

Frankly, I kinda like what Blizzard is doing with their forums. Sure, there's risks, but I also think there's a good chance it'd make the forums a more decent place. And just like in the real world, I'm ok with those incredibly remote risks if it means there's more decency around. That's why I'm ok with leaving my house every day.

These forums are a pretty decent place. Must be because we're forced to post with our real names and not because of, say, proper moderation.

That, and the user base difference. Not taking anything away from PA but I am pretty sure Blizzards daily post count blows PA out of the water.

To be fair, Bliz gets paid to operate those forums, and every single poster [in the English board] is paying them at least $15/month. They should be able to pay for a proper moderation team, not the paltry 12 people.

Penny-Arcade forums are much smaller, but have more mods and there is no revenue commitment from the posters to the site.

Bliz could have cleared up the moderation issue with a much more robust MVP system. Give them real moderation abilities and a report system to keep them in check, rather than the worthless green sycophant thing they have implemented today. Having only 12 real mods for the entire multi-million North American playerbase is just impossible resource management.

I worked for a jewelry company once, and we decided to send a pizza menu to one of the regular stores we fix and ship jewelry too.

The plan worked. The next day, we had a pizza arrive. The store manager ending up paying the tab. Ah, harassment.

At my work it would not happen since I work in a place that has several government regulated security programs in place. So the pizza guy would basically get to the outside of the front door and if no one can verify him he goes back to his car. We have to notify our front desk when we order food so we don't even know the food is here until after the delivery takes place. If the front desk doesn't know then my boss certainly would never find out. I can see how at a retail place or something a little less restrictive it could work.

My boss is a lady and our front desk would end up calling the pizza place and say stop delivering or start calling to verify before delivering long before me or my boss would ever hear about it. At the end of the day it would be a huge waste of time for the guy ordering pizzas. Plus how many pizza shops are going to take a massive deliver request multiple times in a row? So are we now assuming my estalker is calling every pizza place in my area and ordering mass pizzas on a stolen credit card just to annoy me? Honestly I would be honored if anyone went to that level to try harass me at work.

Hell if I wanted to harass somebody seriously, I'd go to any number of free internet access places (coffee shop, whatever), find one of those free internet fax services, and fax him a picture of an 8 year old with the caption of "Hey X, this is Mary and she said she'd like to meet you - the usual time and place okay?". If I was super paranoid I'd bounce it off a couple proxies in Iran or wherever first.

It's not like it's even remotely difficult to seriously fuck people's lives up anonymously if you have perceived cause to do so, and a great many people have perceived cause. I mean...WoW is a game where a lot of the enjoyment is in beating other people at something. That will piss somebody off enough eventually.

Does the denial of using real names as troll reduction disprove John Gabriel's Greater Internet Dickwad theory, in which he states: A Person + Anonymity + An Audience = Total Dickwad? Taking anonymity away from the equation leaves only a person and an audience, and that usually doesn't create internet dickwads, especially if there are repercussions, such as your name being shown.
