I think a lot of people will try TOR, but I don't think it's going to significantly impact WoW.

GW2 probably won't because... believe it or not, because of no monthly subscription. People will assume it's a lesser game for that reason alone. Conspicuous consumption at its finest.

Then those retarded people can enjoy being stalked on WoW's forums while not being able to even breathe without a minimum 5k + GS and breathing achievement, in triplicate. Or can hope for the best out of SWTOR, which is the other awesome game in the pipe right now.

Several pages back, but I can't resist. Let's not forget that EA is running the TOR ship, and even if they had no other "big business vidja game" crimes, they're still pretty well known for one: making goddamn awful MMOs.

I have taken more and more interest in what's out there in the genre, and the ArenaNet guys are looking better and better. Also, GW2 is looking badass.

GW2 and TOR are near equal in my things that are awesome coming soon, but GW2 is still inching to being my number 1 most anticipated title for next year.

I don't think that even the people who were full stop against in-game RealID exposing your full name to friends-of-friends let alone your friends assumed Blizz would go this far.

    Sexy...

Female friend of mine just confirmed that there is a script going around that doesn't require you to update any malicious addons to find your Real ID info.

They didn't download anything at all recently, and unless something was already on her PC (doubtful) you can access peoples real names now just by running it on their toon name.

So sadly with this bit of information, now knowing that random people and not just 'friends of friends' can see your name... this changes things.

Hopefully all this hullabaloo about security gets heard, but I'll be turning this off and those two people I talked to using it will now have to text me instead.

I am fairly confident that saeris, who knows an infinite amount more about these things than the majority of us, has already debunked this. In fact I think he actually posted said script a few pages back.

I just got a call from said friend saying, and I quote.

I haven't downloaded any new addons, only have 3 friends on my ID (me her BF and another RL friend of mine) and she just got a whisper in game from random guildie saying... Hey XXXXX is short for XXXXXXXXX and YYYYYY is your last name right?

Said guildie isn't on her friends list...said they got it using a script.

For me, that's enough to not care that someone I don't know on a forum 'debunked it' I'll go with what my friend has actually told me.

They're getting to be worse than Facebook when it comes to personal privacy. I've disabled Real ID and won't be using anything that requires it.

unfortunately it's coded to you at all times and a simple addon /script has already been made to view all other players realID information regardless of their settings

Please don't keep spreading this mistruth. There is no such script.

Addons do have access to your real name, but there's no way for other players to see it unless the addon is specifically designed to broadcast that data. It would be a maliciously designed addon, not some innocent fault that can be exploited. There is no exploit, there is no flaw; you just have to be careful what addons you install, like you should always have been. The script you saw posted on the Blizzard forums just demonstrates that your real name is locally available to addons, not that you can somehow view other people's names.

Why those functions are available at all to 3rd party addons at all boggles the mind.

I hardly believe addon scripts could be or are being mined for personal info. And even on the off chance this is the case, it will become obsolete once RealID is fully implemented and the names can be had, and by extension the other info, much much more easily. So it's a moot point.

I'm sure they're very capable at what they do. But on this I'll ere on the side of caution.

I only used it to talk to 2 RL friends anyway, it was convenient. This makes it less convenient, and if there is no such script. great.

I argued that seeing a name won't matter if its friends of friends... who cares. random people I don't need knowing anything...problem. My own name is very common, but if there is a chance this script works, its moved from the realm of "no big deal, its just friends of friends seeing my name" to "chance some DBag I grouped with can now access my name and harass me if they find me, or some other poor sap that shares my name" that's not cool.

Or that guildie could be friends of one of her friends and got her name that way. There's no script that can get your RealID info from you without your permission.

except... Me and my RL friend are on alliance and don't know her guildie... and her BF only has her on his list.

this is a very small circle of friends I'm talking about. Me, IRL friend, her, her BF. I have 2 people on my list rest are only friends with each other. and I'm 100% confident that my other friend has no connections horde side on my server, as they rerolled a toon on my server just to level with my alt on alliance.

    Hello everyone,

I'd like to take some time to speak with all of you regarding our desire to make the Blizzard forums a better place for players to discuss our games. We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.

It's important to note that we still remain committed to improving our forums. Our efforts are driven 100% by the desire to find ways to make our community areas more welcoming for players and encourage more constructive conversations about our games. We will still move forward with new forum features such as conversation threading, the ability to rate posts up or down, improved search functionality, and more. However, when we launch the new StarCraft II forums that include these new features, you will be posting by your StarCraft II Battle.net character name + character code, not your real name. The upgraded World of Warcraft forums with these new features will launch close to the release of Cataclysm, and also will not require your real name.

I want to make sure it's clear that our plans for the forums are completely separate from our plans for the optional in-game Real ID system now live with World of Warcraft and launching soon with StarCraft II. We believe that the powerful communications functionality enabled by Real ID, such as cross-game and cross-realm chat, make Battle.net a great place for players to stay connected to real-life friends and family while playing Blizzard games. And of course, you'll still be able to keep your relationships at the anonymous, character level if you so choose when you communicate with other players in game. Over time, we will continue to evolve Real ID on Battle.net to add new and exciting functionality within our games for players who decide to use the feature.

In closing, I want to point out that our connection with our community has always been and will always be extremely important to us. We strongly believe that Every Voice Matters, ( http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/about/mission.html ) and we feel fortunate to have a community that cares so passionately about our games. We will always appreciate the feedback and support of our players, which has been a key to Blizzard's success from the beginning.
