Conservative Fox News television host, author, and radio host Glenn Beck has started a university.
Sort of.
According to an announcement on Beck's Web site, "Beck University is a unique academic experience bringing together experts in the fields of religion, American history and economics." In July, August and September, interested parties can participate in "captivating lectures and interactive online discussions" in which "experts will explore the concepts of Faith, Hope and Charity and show you how they influence America's past, her present and most importantly her future."
Yup. Two are traditional academics, Louisiana State University professor James R. Stoner, Jr. and former Columbia Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychology and Education David L. Buckner.
I'm interested in Studies in Moral Courage: Joe McCarthy, myself!

I know this is a joke.
Oh good, you would approve of the school board of the State of Texas' proposed changes to the history curricula in that state. Right up your alley.
I really, really wish this were a joke. It's not. Worst of all, this is likely to have an effect on textbooks, spreading the consequences beyond the Lone Star State.
It can't be worse than Bob Jones University. It just can't.
So, now that you've given fate the double bird salute, what are you going to do for an encore?
Defecating on Oral Roberts' grave would be a good start, considering that I'm pretty sure he invented the unaccredited university.
Beck University seems to be a wingnut forum, a slightly more mainstream stormfront. Bob Jones Unviersity, Oral Roberts University and their ilk perpetuate a fundamentalist underclass. I'll bet $50 that there's no way that this'll be that bad.
Is Glenn Beck trolling academia with those class titles?
Angel may not have made it entirely clear: those titles are jokes by the magazine Mother Jones.
Eh, this is just another way for Glenn Beck to funnel money towards himself, which I'm sure he needs since his ratings are plummeting, it probably won't be a big deal.
Best news I've heard in ages, anyone have a link citing the precise damage? Is this something that everyone else already knows, but I haven't figured out yet because I've been too busy trying to pretend Beck doesn't exist?
Is this really an institute of higher education, or is this just a $10/month subscription service for lectures? Because looking at both the CBS piece and Beck's website, it doesn't look like there is any coursework beyond possibly reading and listening to lectures. And it's obviously not accredited. This makes perfect sense given the popularity of free online courses from top universities. People from all over the political spectrum sign up for those, so Beck figured he could make some easy money catering to people who are very conservative. Makes good business sense and doesn't seem any more pernicious than anything else he does.

I've had threads on it. We know, and it is disgusting.

Are the titles of the classes jokes but the topics real?
Dammit, my high school didn't offer AP Hope or AP Faith. I'm going to get stuck in some suck-ass Gen Ed classes while Joe Hopeman from East Charitytown High is going to be able to start in Faith 202!

His ratings could decline by 50% and he would still beat his nearest cable news competitor in his timeslot by a healthy margin.
He's always going to be way more popular than he should be.
Anyone who actually pays money for this thing deserves exactly what they get.
Validation of their idiotic worldview by conservative "intellectuals"?
Funny how you put that into quotes. Conservative intellectuals do exist, but you aren't going to find any of them in this mess.
In the end this will be a mess, I'd say it will implode pretty quickly. The whakos on the right already drowned out the more reasonable voices, this is just another nail i n the coffin that will cause some hilarious infighting.

That's the reason I put the word into quotes. Finding conservative intellectuals is kinda like finding black people in Russia. You know they exist, and you might even see one every now and then, but expecting them to show up and make an impact isn't realistic.
The right is going through a period of ideological cleansing far more aggressive than what the left is putting itself through, anyway, so I expect any intellectuals that remain are also remaining careful about what they say. Now is an especially bad time for them to deviate from the party line.

This is a very polite way of saying "The crazies have taken over and the people with any modicum of intellectual heft on the right are fucking terrified of them"
There's already been mass disownings of right-to-center institutions like CATO, The Economist, etc. And of course people like David Frum and Bruce Bartlett and Julian Sanchez.
So, yeah, the crazies have taken over.
e: anyone remember the Frum vs. Goldberg bloggingheads? In the immediate wake of Frum's expulsion? Goldberg was practically squirming when pushed on the usual crazy points of "Is Obama a socialist?" "The most socialist Presidency? More socialist than Nixon?" etc.

I rarely see Republicans or Fox News people ever bringing up The Economist. Maybe I don't watch enough, but that's probably for the best. I have seen CATO institute people on cable news, and there are a number of highly educated economists at CATO, but generally their information is extrapolated to bizarre conclusions by people like Glenn Beck (global conspiracies and what not.) It's kind of what he's known for.
This doesn't sound like "university" as much as "really, really expensive podcasts by any right-wing professors that Beck can scrape together".
I imagine this is pretty much it. It just seems like an extra feature on his website.
As for ratings, this guy from the Huffington Post in late May says they're about the same as last year. He said there was a boost during the winter and a decline back to where it was last year. It's apparently three times larger than his next competitor though.

Whose doing the speaking? Any known people yet?
Yup. Two are traditional academics, Louisiana State University professor James R. Stoner, Jr. and former Columbia Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychology and Education David L. Buckner.
The third, however...
Well, see for yourself.

But in all seriousness, Higher Education is a lucrative business. Like gold.
Seriously at this point it's not funnny anymore the man is delusional

The two are both comedians, right?
I wonder how long it'll be before someone sues to have his "certification" recognized.
Well we certainly know that anyone who takes this shit seriously is certifiable...
Basically.
The main difference is that Colbert's audience is (on average) more likely to be aware that what he's saying is a joke.
He's always going to be way more popular than he should be.
