Paul the Psychic Octopus has stood behind the Mannschaft, German's chosen team of football heroes.

It was Paul the Psychic Octopus who pushed the team to victory vs England

and led the way for their crushing victory over Argentina

kTYiU.jpg

It predicted the victor of all their games, even rooting for Serbia in the group stages - a crisis for the Mannschaft from which they would learn and become stronger to secure their fight for the cup.

I'm thinking paul has money on Germany winning but wanted to maximise his odds first. I've put money on a big German win. 3-1 to be exact. And Klose to score first. Singles tho. Sod scorecasts.

    CAN BE WRONG

Oh, sure, Germany, up until now he's all great and wise and reality-warping, but now that he went against you it's all 'he's wrong!' and 'he's got skin in the game!'

He warps reality in his favor. He made you lose to Serbia.

EDIT: Alexi Lalas has just deferred to the octopus.

The BBC pundits seem to be going for "Ooh! zil" as their pronunciation of Özil, for some reason. I wonder how they're all feeling about saying before the England game that not a single German would get into the English team.

They do realize that the game can't end in a tie, right? They do realize that losing in a penalty shootout has the same end result as losing in regulation: the other team advances and you don't, right? They do realize that the best way to not lose is to... you know... WIN, right?

Why do so many teams play to not lose instead of playing to win?

Because playing to win usually results in losing, look how Argentina fared at playing to win. The german and Spanish teams are very tactically minded, biding their time looking for chances/openings and then taking them, then the other side rushing in counter attack. Football can be a very tactical game unlike a lot of other sports where it's all points. That's why you get draws in football.

Spain are going for it though, Gosling. They just have a tendency to go for the less than direct ball, and instead pass their way in. Germany are playing like they always do (this tournament), absorbing pressure and then catching the opposition out on the break.

It means a lot of ball work by one side (Spain), with sharp moments of action (for both).

I really don't understand the offside rule.

Its like Hockey, except the line is dynamically based on the furthest defender. I think. The ball must lead the offense across that line.
