Super Paper Mario was supposed to throw out all the RPG elements from the last paper mario games and be CLOSER TO PURE SIDE SCROLLING THAN EVER...
Seems like they backpedaled a bit.
...As people have said a million times over, HP readings and the like have been around since the old GC E3 builds. Stop making shit up to cover your ass.
May 11, 2006 - Anyone who says that the GameCube is dead better take another look. Super Paper Mario from Nintendo is the latest chapter in the Paper Mario story. Combining classic platformer gameplay with RPG elements in the 2D/3D world of the Paper Mario series, this game will take Mario to new dimensions. The title will hurl Mario through eight worlds filled with traps, mysteries, puzzles, and items that seem to draw themselves out of thin air.
Unlike previous Paper Mario titles, our favorite Italian plumber isn't the only playable character. Peach and Bowser, both in the Paper Mario style, will be fully playable, though their roles are currently unknown.
Developed by Intelligent Systems, Super Paper Mario is currently set to hit the GameCube in the fourth quarter of 2006. Stay tuned for more information from IGN as it develops. In the mean time, be sure to check out the official trailer and screens in our media section.
Come to think of it, Intelligent Systems co-developed Wario Ware Wii.
My faith in the Wiimote use in this game has shot up tremendously.
Yeah, the Wario Ware team consists of a mix of people from Intelligent Systems and R&D1.
Not to drive it into the ground, but I just realized.
Remember how strangely incredible the 2D intro/outro animations in Wario were? This game will almost entirely be that.
DAMN.
I was just thinking that. Those intros at 60 FPS and clean cel-shading are beautiful to behold. To think of a Paper Mario game built on visuals like that ... man.
I expected this game to be an MMORPG side scrolling adventure game released to us via episodic content each week over Wii Connect 24 that also incorporated FPS deathmatch and a Mushroom Kingdom RTS combined.
I'm totally let down, because all the previous trailers made it seem like they were obviously going in this direction.

Yeah, Wii update was pointless after all. Big surprise.
What? Just because it can't automatically turn a game from one system into one for the next, especially when the latter is allegedly going to end up with better visuals? This is your punishment for being warped enough to expect that.

The visuals were perfectly fine on the cube, and none of us can speak about how much of an update was made, as none of us have seen the new screenshots.
The wiimote functionality seems rather pointless here, adding nothing to a game that could have been released around 6 months prior to it's new release date with likely no signifigant difference in quality, and to a much larger userbase.

the only thing the game possibly looses from moving from GC to Wii is potential lost sales from GC owners, and I personally doubt that would actually be the case. Everything else the move to Wii provides is beneficial or neutral.

Why don't you just write a full review if you've played the game so extensively.
This game looks hot to death. Shit-hot even. This game is so hot that the sun turns up the AC when it comes over. This game is so hot that satan just keeps a stack of them where the furnace used to be.

You just like to tune out words like "seems" and "likely", eh? I'm annoyed that they pushed the game back 6 months to add some seemingly pointless wiimote functionality and to have it be available to less people.

Yeah, I remember when I felt that way about Twilight Princess. Turns out I was being a bitchy pessimist, just like you are right now.
Because it's a Mario game, the idea in this case isn't making it available to more people, it's making the Wii even more attractive (as its first official Mario game). The goal might've been evailability if it were some minor thing that they needed to get as many sales as possible to recoup, but this game is attractive.

They're gently telling people like TM to move on.
to be honest, I imagine soon Wii software sales will be over taking GC software sales (if not allread)
I doubt most new Wii owners would buy a new release GC game, and for most GC owners who would buy new release now, this is just another incentive to get a Wii.
(I am agreeing with you if it isnt clear in the post )
We have seen lists that say Super Paper Mario was on the Cube, lists that say it was moved to the Wii, and so on. It has been a back and forth issue for a long time now. Finally we can officially lay this rumor to rest, Super Paper Mario is indeed on the Wii. The latest issue of Nintendo Power confirms the title for April 07, and lists a slew of details. Check out some info below thanks to Andre.
Takes place in the town of Flipside, where a giant black hole looms overhead, complete with floating math equations (that old story again huh?!)
Mario gains the ability to change perspective at will, switching from the normal side scrolling 2d view to a 3d view of the 2d “paper mario like†world
Switching camera from 2d to 3d is necessary. Some puzzles can only be solved by switching the camera to reveal new paths on a level
Wiimote is held sideways, 2 button is used to jump, A button to switch view.
Mario collects friends called Pixis that give him special abilities. These abilities make use of the Wiimote capabilities. One Pixi named Tippy allows you to point the Wiimote at the screen to learn more about enemies, or discover hidden passages.
Shaking the Wiimote at the right time when you jump on an enemy allows you to get more points
Graphics have received a noticeable upgrade since E3 videos

Butterfly (now apparently controlled by Wiimote) is present too

They should have just made a whole game based off of that alone. Period.

As do I, but either way we'll just have to wait and see if the wiimote functionality was justified or not.
We knew it was being ported to Wii ages ago.

SO EXCITED ME CAN'T THINK WELLS
I seriously thought it was gone...cancelled. I am so happy.
Small write-up from Go Nintendo

The one button better be for running then.
but the challenger comes from beating a level without letting go of run...
When you kill enemies, HP numbers pop up, and there appears to be no variable movement speed in this video (or others that have surfaced).
