I agree SageinaRage. Personally, I was a little disappointed when it dropped off the Gamecube release "list," but given how popular the Wii ended up being Nintendo would be idiotic to not get quality Mario games onto it ASAP.
Nothing left for Gamecube but Radio Allergy and potentially Backyard Basketball 2007.

Now that I think about it, the 1 button is probably used to switch characters.
And this is awesome. I've got at least one game a month I'm looking at buying for my Wii. I love this little plastic box of fun.
From IGN's preview, the 1 button is probably for using items SMB2 syle. We already know that A switches between 2D/3D, and character switching doesn't sound like a face button-critical task. I'd expect it on B.
I thought of that after I read further into IGN's impressions. I change my answer to be more in line with yours.

More like pure genius. Nintendo has always been all about the April/May burst of quality.
It seems Microsoft and Sony caught on though so this will be an interesting spring sales wise. I don't expect, say, Age of Conan 360 to outsell Pokemon Diamond but I'm looking forward to seeing what catches on the most besides the obvious Nintendo juggernaut.
This is the Wii's first new Mario game, so we'll see if that's enough to push it into those Pokemon levels of selling out every day for a two months.

Disclaimer: From what I heard when I found that, it's not actually an in-game shot, just fan made. But still... wow. Currently my desktop image.
You hold the Wiimote like an old-school controller, the game is in side-scrolling 2D mode.
You then turn the Wiimote to use it one-handed, and the in-game world rotates to the "behind-the back" 3D world.
Holy crap that would be awesome.
