Akali = gank machine
As stated above, you should be 2nd or 3rd into a fight, or mopping cleanup. I'd even say go boots 3 over merc treads so you can sting and move. This comes just from my observations of good vs. bad akali's.
So I've been playing gangplank since I heard that my favorite little engineer gets all the bans in ranked.
Wow! last hitting is really easy on him. I have always have so much gold.
I've been building avarice blade -> executioners calling -> Merc Shoes -> Phantom Dancer
Had one game where I had 78% crit chance by the end (with agility elixir) I had at least 3 double kills and one ace that game.
That's an OK build, but I prefer to go -> Wriggle's Lantern -> Boots of Swiftness -> Youmu's Ghostblade -> Trinity Force -> Infinity Edge -> Last Whisper
the inf edge is kinda key to gangplank because he is all about crits with parley.

Akali advice? Specifically early game and good item builds?
She kicks ass for me mid/late game, but I need some improvement on her early.
Seconding request! She's next on my list of champs to buy.
Akali works off of both AD and AP, so what I usually do (this isn't original at all) is make it so one of my quint runes is the Attack Damage one, go 21 into off masteries making sure to get the 3 AD on the 4th tier, and grab a Dorans Blade as my first item. It activates your passive allowing not only the lifesteal from the blade, but your skills will return 10% of their damage in health to you.
Then you can just stack AP if you want. I usually get Rylais so that when you shadow dance to someone, they get snared.
Good runes:
MagPen Reds
Dodge Yellows
Flat CD blues
Akali is super squishy and does some of the highest damage in the game. You will get targeted first every time. Be ready for this because it's frustrating.
Never engage first unless you KNOW you'll kill them quickly.
If you don't have a lot of runes and what not, you can go with a Longsword into almost anything really. Brutalizer for the CD and ArPen if you want, but I usually go Sword of the Occult and let my stacks beef up my Crescent Slash. My build almost always centers around AP, so all you need is a singular AD item that you can use until later. If you have the mastery and rune setup similar to what I outlined above, you can keep that Dorans Blade until near the end and trade it for whatever you want. I usually sell it when I get a Hextech Gunblade.
Akali's Q ability is really her bread and butter, wrt killing enemy heroes. Learn to time it so that you hit someone with the Q, wait till the CD is up (or almost up) go in, hit to trigger the charge, immediately Q again and hit for the charge again. With significant amounts of AP (and Lichbane if you're there) that's really dangerous burst damage.
Also keep in mind that her Q is really good for last hitting minions early on.
If you feel confident in your ability to get stacks and not lose them, Mejai's Soulstealer is great, and Lichbane is great for you regardless. Akali is significantly stronger when focusing on AP as opposed to AD or a hybrid build.
I've been running with 21/9/0 with Heal and Clairvoyance.
However, I've noticed that getting Red Buff really helps with my damage... It actually helps a massive amount, actually. It's a huge buff to my output.
So with that in mind I'm considering running a 19/7/10 build. (In offense I reach down to the 15% spell penetration and 6 armor penetration talent, in defense I grab -30 sec cooldown on heal and the hp regen per .3% of your mana talent, in utility I grab the 30% increase length on monster buffs talent.)
My thinking here is that I'd probably rather have the red buff for 30% longer than a 5% damage increase all the time. I can just focus on grabbing that red buff every time it's up.
So I'm having a hard time finding a place for the snowball items every guide seems to recommend (soulstealer etc.). It seems like any game where these would work well, you would already be doing so well as to not need the bonus, but in any other case it either sucks or makes you play too conservatively.
Also I can't choose a main, almost every character I've tried has been fun. Gragas is awesome times but I haven't found a good item build for him that lets him fill his tankish role without totally gimping his damage (and thus any reason someone would attack him). Casking once a minute or so just doesn't seem like enough.
Also for any Anivia players, what gets defined as a "chill" for frostbite? Is it any slow, any slow that causes those ice spikes on the ground, or just the birds own abilities that specifically say "chills the enemy"? If its the latter, what characters and items can apply the chill? Frozen mallet, Omen, or Rylai's?

Last 3 solo queue ranked matches in a row my top or bottom lane has gotten double-killed within the first minute of the game-- 2/3 of those times were before minions arrived.
I don't understand why Riot pairs me up like this. Why can't I be on the team doing the double-killing? Why am I unworthy?
So I had a pretty fun pug experience last night in the solo ranked queue.
I get put into the Champion Selection, and I'm like third to pick. I'd prefer there to not be other junglers on my team, so I say in chat, "Hey everyone. I'd like to play jungle Amumu."
But apparently there are people who play this game who have never seen a jungle Amumu and are profoundly confused by the notion. The "leader" of the our team says in chat that jungle Amumu sucks and then bans him. He bans him just because I was going to play him.
So, I decide now would be the perfect time to try a brand new champion! And why not grab some new summoner spells that I really haven't used that much before? So I pick Evelynn, with Teleport and Fortify as my summoner spells. Oh, and I made her tank spec with my Amumu runes.
Needless to say, my team rages all throughout the game... especially when I started to stack Sunfire Capes. Now, I never intentionally got myself killed or anything and actually finished the game with a not too horrible K/D/A ratio as compared to my teammates: 3/4/4.
Oh, and another fun anecdote:
After my OMGWTFBBQ-MUMU round, one of the other team (who was nice) friended me. Who do I get matched up against next time? Him. Early round "Oh crap, not you again" and he proceeded to run away from me whenever we matched up in the the next round.
~5 min into the game, they've killed 4 of our guys, we've killed 0 of theirs.
WHY AM I ALWAYS ON THIS TEAM?!
I seriously can't take it.
They just pulled an amazing tower-dive tactic with 3 of their mans, perfectly coordinating abilities.
Meanwhile we actually got a Heimer, but he can't even hold mid.
This isn't fair. If I'm not the cause of the team sucking, shouldn't my matches generally even out? I'm not feeding, the rest of the team is, but this happens every game.
-Edit- Oh that's why. The Heimer is level 11 but hasn't even gotten his turret spell to level 3 yet. Super. Just 2 little yellow turrets all on their own, way behind the tower he is defending. That makes sense.

Red buff also chills, oddly enough. It also sets them on fire.
you should test this...
as i've read, anything that adds the frosty effect is a chill. frost arrows, volley, glacial storm, nunu's stuff, frozen mallet, phage, rylai's.
i'm pretty sure red buff isn't a 'chill'.
Red buff causes the person hit with it to be slowed. If you look at the affected person's feet when it happens in game, you'll see frost -- just like when they get hit by a Frozen Mallet.
Edit: I don't know if it counts as a chill effect for the purposes of Anivia's ability, though. But it definitely causes that frosty animation under the person's feet.
I'm really getting tired of Sivir. Or I'm taking it out on her because my teams keep losing.
It just sucks that she has no ability to escape combat whatsoever. Her ult, I guess, but that really ain't much in team fights.
-Edit- Seriously though. I have full health and I'm standing next to a full health tower. Xin doesn't even think twice about it -- just tower dives right in, and pretty much instantly kills me. And then walks away. How is that reasonable? This was like level 11 too. And he wasn't particularly fed.
One is that they rely on player submitted logs so they merely serve as a sample of the total games.
Two is that they cannot separate by ELO, so a game with a guy starting out is counted the same was as a guy in, say, the top 1000.
The data can be interesting but I would take much of it with a grain of salt; for example the champion with the lowest win-loss ratio is Akali but that doesn't mean she's underpowered, I'd take it to mean that she's hard to learn.

Are you really arguing over which graphical effect appears when someone gets slowed
in the games i've been in where heimer wasn't banned, and my team picked him... they sucked bad. need to be able to swap champs.
That's funny because every time my team has been able to first pick heimer we completely rolled the other team.
In my experience 80% - 90% of games are decided on the character select screen. Usually having top tier heroes and a balanced team are more important than the actual skill of the players on each team, since the player skill on each team is usually similar due to ranking.

its true. games are won or lost at character select. like when some silly goose picks twitch and sucks. or someone starts flipping out about us making suggestions on who to ban, when he wasn't even the captain, and then feeds as udyr. fuck solo queue is annoying, but if i want to play, i have to live with it.

Jax is not so bad. Tried a completely different build.
Built him with full defensive masteries and stacking AP after Rageblade. Also, dropped W in favor of his E, which is MUCH better, my god.
His damage is still kinda eh, though. Is that just me? Or what
Also, I really want amumu goddamn

Yeah I'll usually pick that up somewhere too. Can't remember the name of all the items off the top of my head.
I just learned how great raise morale is for denying the enemy gold. and how great it is for controlling the position of the front in your lane.

I mean they wouldn't have gotten anywhere without my Sivir cleaning up all the minions and towers for them.

Our leader's first ban. I already know the game is going to suck.
How bad could his first ban be to warrant such a comment?

It's not orange zigzags, they're white zigzags, like the Frozen Mallet animation.
There was a bug in for several weeks that made it so you had to be 21 to buy them, even though 20 is the required level. Glad to hear they fixed it.
and it adds a damage over time effect like malady.
Ah where could i see these stats?

look at rammus' feet, there is only the orange diagonal zigzags
those are from the lizard buff
