Just finished a game as AP Poppy just for kicks, we were well in the lead by the time I was considering triforce/lichbane and figured why the hell not. To much fun.

Conspiracy! Riot devs know whats up and are quietly pushing the game towards a new hammer-centric metagame.

First Obama now Riot Games on the communism train, I'd argue that sickle using champs are pretty strong too.
Well i still have to unlock him but like what kind of champion is he? I'm most familiar with warwick and jax. Does he have a good answer to mages pinging him from semi-afar. That and i guess, item order mostly. Abilities i usually feel out over the course of a match or two.
edit: Also tips in general for early game would be nice. I still occasionally bite the dust in the first few engagements. Should i just play even more defensively?
There's no reason to be good with all the champions. You should know roughly what each them do, but purely for the purposes of playing against them. Really only a handful of champions will fit your playstyle, and you should focus on tricking those out and becoming ownage with them.
Melk used to Garen, before he started his new tryst with Ezreal. Apparently the goal is to just buy Sunfire capes. It goes something like this:
1) Do you have an open inventory slot? YES: (2) NO: (5)
2) Do you have boots? YES: (4) NO: (3)
3) Buy Boots of Swiftness. (1)
4) Buy a Sunfire Cape. (1)
5) Win.
Combat consists entirely of simply being next to enemies, using Decisive Strike for its move speed buff and Judgement for extra DPS.
Did I do it right Melk?
Yes. Yes, you did well.
Additionally, you want to start the game with Boots and 3x Health Potions. Oh and get Ghost as one of your summoner spells.
As far as your skills go, you'll want to do this:
Level: Skill
1: Judgment
2: Courage (or Decisive Strike)
3: Judgment
4: Decisive Strike if you got Courage at level 2, or vice-versa.
5: Judgment
6: Ultimate
Then prioritize: Ultimate->Judgment->Courage->Decisive Strike
Reasoning: Judgment does a ton of damage at early levels, so get it when it's good. You'll want a fully charged Courage as quickly as possible come midgame so you can tank more effectively. Decisive Strike gives a greater movement speed upon leveling, but it's silence is the same duration, and Courage is simply better generally.
As far as your playstyle goes, it's simple. In the early game, kill minions and take advantage of your superior laning ability. Kill enemy champions if you can by using Decisive to get in range and casting Judgment on top of them. Remember you can end Judgment early by tapping the button again, allowing you to hit them with Decisive and possibly your Ultimate. Tower diving is completely possible at early levels thanks to Courage and your execute, plus your amazing HP regen in lane.
When it comes to end game, your focus will be getting right in the face of your enemy, tanking them by sitting on top of them and dealing damage with your Sunfire Capes, silencing, and helping DPS priority targets with your execute. If they're dumb enough to focus you, simply pop Courage and use Judgment to get away (it prevents slowing effects).
I will just quickly note that after playing Garen to hell (at least 120 games with a 65%ish win ratio) I believe him to be a sub-par champion generally speaking. I think that many other characters do what he does better. Garen is a great jack-of-all-trades but a master of none, and I think that leaves him without filling a proper niche in a well-balanced team. We made it work, but yeah. I would recommend getting better at a champion who can do what Garen does better.
Meditating under a tower while he chases you doesn't count
Nah
Highlander + LS > Xin
He was either a bad Xin or you were fed much more than him, seriously that's what it comes down to. A good xin can insta kill characters as squishy as yi from level 6 onwards if he has his ult up. Highlander and LS wouldn't have made a difference because you'd have been dead in under a second from when he hit e r w q q

What's the consensus on Mordekaiser? Is a spiked two-handed hammer still a hammer?
And what about Jax? Are we interested in hammers specifically, or hammer-type weapons? Because a lamppost would definitely qualify under the latter.

Current Nidalee build:
Flash + Clarity. I find I can get away easier with Flash than Ghost, so I stick with it.
1. Doran's Ring
2. Sheen
3. Ninja Tabi
4. Rageblade
5. The Brutalizer
And it's pretty fluid for the most part. If I find I'm burning through more mana than usual, I'll grab Tear of the Goddess post level 6 and spam it to max in cougar form.
Should I be taking armour items, or is that a waste on a character as squishy as Nidalee? I still need to get used to sticking to ranged with her and going to cougar only for the kill. Far too many times I leap into a battle... and I never get to leap out.
And what's with the free champ rotation? Is it not the same day every week? When I first started playing, I was told it was Wednesday. Then it changed on the Tuesday. The week after, the Monday. I don't really care either way because I've got most of the champs anyway, but just wondering.

Depends entirely on the game. If you're vs 4 enemy melee, then thornmail isn't a waste (no matter how squishy you think you are.

They change the rotation when it's convenient for them.
Even post-pounce nerf, CDR is ridiculous on Nidalee. You can't go wrong with a mid-late game Glacial Shroud. Mana is always a concern (unless you have blue buff), it gives 15% CDR, and enough armor to stop anything not wielding a Last Whisper.
Unfortunately, even with a defensive build you likely won't be able to run about in Cat form like you do from levels 6-11. It's for this reason that I (and most top tier players) switched from AD to AP Nid (which is a misnomer because every Nid should really be hybrid). Nidalee's late game support is as good as most pure support character's and that ridiculous heal should not be wasted (honestly, whose idea was it to take Taric/Soraka's heal and give it a ton of atk spd attached to it?).
Xin is balanced, I just wiped the floor with him last game. Goes down fast if you focus him. And then you can easily take the rest of his team 4v1 once he's out of the picture.
I don't have much of a problem with him except that ult sweep of his does retarded damage. Riot said that that will be what they tweak though, so I have no issues.
edit: also at level one you will be facing tons of noobies who havent played anything besides the tutorial so you will be fine
I'm sure this is true, but I'd really like to get some basic familiarity with the game in a solo setting. The tutorial is pretty sparse, and many of the guides are hard to understand from a complete n00b perspective. It seems strange to me that they can't have the bot matches be 100% local and not burden the servers, but oh well.
what i dislike about riot's decision to 'make normal games practice' is now what about the fucking players who want to play inhouses with their friends? GUESS INHOUSE 3v3 IS OUT OF THE QUESTION WHEN I HAVE SIX PEOPLE

They took down practice games to help with server load during Season 1 launch. Bringing them back up probably isn't as simple as it should be and will have to wait for the patch.

They've said that one person making a practice game by themselves to mess around in takes the same server load as a full 5v5 game so it makes sense.
